I obtained a sample of this after reading the histrionic reviews about this being “gothic” “archaic” “spooky” “of another era”. I was sold by the evocative descriptions and the intriguing backstory behind the perfume. For reference, gothic to me means something dark, spicy, damp, earthy, or cold, with notes of rose, leather, amber, tobacco, or incense (example: FM’s gothic rose, Portrait of a Lady).
Sadly, Marescialla doesn’t smell gothic to me at all. It’s definitely of another era and it’s certainly unique, but ultimately it’s a spicy chypre – with a strong emphasis on spicy. If I had to compare it to another fragrance, it would be Guerlain’s Mitsouko. Both are strong, long lasting chypres that never let you forget you’re wearing them. It requires a clement application not to let these fragrances dominate the wearer. The unique twist that Marescialla has is its pungent, sharp spice (it made me sneeze all day). Ultimately I’m a bit disappointed as this one reads more old school Guerlain than gothic to me. I think this one would do better as a room fragrance, actually. Nevertheless, I still love SMN’s fragrances; they are all unique, long lasting, and automatically catapult you into another era.

This is a beautiful scent but it is much more than that. It is a complex scent possessing zest, sweetness, spiciness and earthiness all in one. It is a lovely light scent of nutmeg on a rich bed of zingy citrus infused crystal roses with winds of soft leather breezing past its magical fields. It is lovely! It is mysterious and otherworldly. Is it unisex? Yes. Marescialla is yin yang in a bottle. Definitely worth a try!

Horror film fans: ever wonder what perfume the Blair Witch would have worn? This is it. Spooky. Dark. Damp. Spices and wet wood. Less cerebral, more primal than its cultured cousin Messe de Minuit. Marescialla means mace in Italian, and I don’t know whether Italians use the word in its other sense — pepper spray — but one could probably use Marescialla to the same effect. I love it but find it too intense to wear. I’d be very intrigued, though, if I smelled it on someone else. Interesting tidbit: After writing this review I went to the SMN site and found this description: “This unusual perfume was created by a French noblewoman, the Countess D’Aumont, wife of a Marshal of France, who used it to scent her gloves. It is said that because of her interest in alchemy, she was charged with witchcraft and burned at the stake.” So there you have it.

well I was clearly very excited when I wrote the below. but here’s a warning: reforumulation may have hit this baby. The Company of Nuns or whatever it is, insists this is not the case, that variation in crops of all their “all naturals” is the only reason the new stuff is full of a house note, and weakened and made more polite and basically I can’t wear. maybe future batches will be better, but I had to hunt around for 2 of the older stock before I could even let on of this catastrophe. will update if newer batches are smelling ok again….
oh so the distinguishing marks: if you get a bottle with a gold label stuck on, you’re fine! at least some of the brew with the label printed directly on the bottle is fine, but not the most recent!
ps I pretty always wear this with Eau d’Italie Bois D’Ombrie they go really well tonight

A real old fashioned nutmeg note, very fresh in the topnote (where you can smell lilac – I think probably due to overlap in the constituents). The nutmegs around today (e.g. Cacharel for men, Kenzo’s Jungle for men) are sweeter and smoother than this version which has quite a raw edge. At one time nutmeg was a favourite in soaps, before its high price ruled it out, so this fragrance recalls old fashioned soap. There is also a nod to a popular mens line of the 1970’s, Faberge’s West. Basenotes are dry, hints of patchouli.

I’m the proud owner of a bottle of Marescialla (The Marshal’s Wife), a gift from my brother. I will say that it is a wild spicy, highly unusual leather cologne with it’s mace and nutmeg notes. I wore it today, and all the men obeyed. Didn’t even need to crack the whip!
