Lipstick On is such a lovely fragrance – soft but not weak, sweet but not saccharine, vintage but not dated. It’s elegant, classic, and timeless. There is almost something mysterious about it in a very unique and alluring way. It’s beautifully sentimental. It makes me think of pink champagne cocktails, slow dancing, silent films, and red lipstick. It’s Ginger Rogers in a bottle. They truly accomplished creating a fragrance that is reminiscent of a vintage vanity. It’s a smooth candied cherry scent mixed with soft flowers. I do not care at all for powdery fragrances, but the rice powder in this is a very fresh and bright scent rather than a heavy powder. I imagine it would layer very well with other fragrances. The bottle is beautiful and looks gorgeous on a vanity, shelf, or dresser. This stunning boudoir blush fragrance is now and forever my new signature scent!

I have an odd relationship with Maison Margiela. I would not classify this as a sexy scent. The price tag has steered me away from purchasing and it is easy to obtain a free sample.

Starts on me with a marked, woody iris, somewhere between Putain des Palace and Iris de Nuit. VERY like those two, minus Putains’ skanky notes. Drying, it takes on a musty/vintage chypre feel with the galbanum and patchouli, a lot like one of those almost masculine antique perfumes. I’m not sure I like that bit. But with it’s vibe of vintage perfume/creamy powdery face makeup, it is definitely what is struck out to be. Very sweet iris/violet in the end, still retaining that creamy makeup undertone, but mostly super sweet violet. I like it okay, but might not be a rebuy, even in sample size, as it gets too sweet on me. I amp sweet, so it won’t do that for everyone. The bottles unfortunately remind me of specimen bottles in a lab.

Right now I am going through a sample of this, but I hope to have a full size bottle by the end of the year. As a lot of makeup junkies know, Sephora has not really been all that great with sending the requested samples in their orders for the past several months; every time I see a Replica fragrance in the free samples section, I try to add it to no avail. I am sure that Lipstick On was one that I asked for and did not get, and I gave up hope of smelling it outside of traveling to a Sephora near me that carried it. However, quite unexpectedly in my last order I did get a spray sample of this lovely perfume even though, once again, it was not what I asked for. This is serendipity, though, because I am sure that it blows whatever fragrance sample I did ask for out of the water. I am a self-avowed makeup aficionado, and lipstick is my biggest love of all makeup products. When I saw this scent pop up on Sephora.com I knew I needed to smell it. I was a little sad to see mixed reviews, but Sephora reviews can be very divided on a lot of different products, so it didn’t dissuade me. When I saw the card in the box I got very excited and immediately spritzed some on my wrists. I was instantly head-over-heels. I usually prefer fragrances that would be considered more unisex, or maybe leaning towards unisex, perfumes that are outside of the box, or fragrances that are very rose-heavy and Lipstick On is none of these. I also tend to dislike powdery fragrances as a rule, and while Lipstick On is definitely very powdery, I still love it. When I see any kind of iris listed in perfume notes I immediately reconsider whether or not I even want to try it, but in the case of this lovely rosè-colored wonder, the powder is what really sets it apart for me. There is some other soft florals in there mingling with the powdery iris that float over a somewhat sweet, luxurious but never overpowering base. The scent is very well-balanced, and while you definitely can journey through the notes over several hours, no one note or segment of the fragrance is overwhelming. It is warm, soft, comforting, feminine AF, inviting, and sexy in an understated way. On my skin, it tends to last at least 5 hours, and it stays somewhat close to the body without being a skin scent (like the lower end of medium sillage, maybe? You won’t smell it across the room, but standing close and paying attention, someone would probably get very faint whiffs of it.) I love perfume, and I definitely do not mind spending money for high quality products, though $126 is a lot for me to drop all at once; however, I do think Lipstick On is worth it, and it could become my signature night out/date/romantic fragrance because it really encapsulates my own personal version of femininity that I want to project to the world.

I like this one, I just dont know that I love it enough to pay the price. It is a very interesting scent. It does start off smelling like lipstick. I had a tube as a teenager that smelled the same. A sort of waxy slightly cherry smell. That didnt entirely disappear as I wore it but it did turn a little sweeter and powdery. It smells of wax and cherry almond and powder and slight vanilla. A little like cherry tobacco and a little like Dr. Pepper.

This was a sample from Sephora. At first sniff this reminded me of the cosmetics/fragrance department of a 1960’s department store. It evoked memories of childhood shopping trips with my mom, and to some degree, the scent of my mom dressing up for a special night out. It was floral and powdery but at the same time it had a freshness about it. Within a few minuted it started to remind me of Flowebomb (which I enjoy). Unfortunately the florals disappeared and this dried down to something sickeningly sweet and animalic. Not my thing at all.

Lipstick On starts off smelling uncannily like waxy 1950s lipstick swirling up from a metal tube. Within 10 minutes the cosmetic smell dissipates and the drydown resembles a sweeter, more “youthful” version of the long discontinued Laura Biagiotti Venezia, with a similar cherry tobacco accord not technically in the notes. For this reason alone, I bought a bottle, as I used to love Venezia. After several hours Lipstick On changes again to a softer, dustier, powdery scent that clings close to the skin.

I just stumbled onto this brand of fragrances a couple of days ago and am really impressed. From what i understand of the brand they have been out in Europe for a couple of years and are just now making their way to the States. I’ve only seen them in Sephora. It’s a niche brand but it’s a really good one. A 3.4 ounce bottle will set you back $125.00 so it’s pretty comparable most other high-end fragrances. One note about the bottling then i’ll get to the fragrance i am reviewing today which is called Lipstick On. The silhouette of each ‘REPLICA’ bottle is inspired by classic apothecary jars, allowing the collection to be instantly identifiable. Each bottle carries a 100 percent cotton label, which is printed using black ink text and resembles the tags used on the clothing and accessories for the ‘REPLICA’ couture collection. The unique pumps are wrapped with a rope to symbolize the authentic reproduction of the original ‘REPLICA’ couture line. Lipstick On is what you would imagine it to be…a very powdery fragrance. What i thought i was detecting in the beginning was cacao turned out to be iris….lots f iris. Similiar to Prada’s infusion d’iris and Dior Hommes Intense Eau de Parfum for men. In fact, Dior’s perfume for men smells almost identical to Lipstick On (one big makeup bag) that in can be worn very easily be a man. Lasting power is phenomenal and so is sillage. There are 8 or 9 fragrances in this line so far and i am going to be reviewing those in the coming days too so watch out for those. 🙂

Surprisingly, this seemed animalic in the topnotes–surprising because they aren’t listed in the notes and that would be upside-down for most fragrances. They dissipated quickly, followed by the makeup notes. Unfortunately, there is no strong lipstick note. I like this, but I think it might be outdone by FM Lipstick Rose and ELDO Putain de Palace. Notes, per Surrender to Chance: top notes of bergamot oil, heliotrope accord and neroli oil; middle notes of orange flower absolute, iris concrete and galbanum oil; and base notes of tonka bean absolute, vanilla bourbon extract and patchouli oil.
