Wow, a heavy hitter and head turner from Elie Saab, which has been growing on me. I have a 10 ml mini bottle of this and since I have been getting hit by addictive wafts of creamy, balmy sandalwood some hours after I put this on, I am seriously considering a full bottle.
Parfum Le Royal is not what I would expect from Elie Saab based on my familiarity with Le Parfum and Girl of Now flankers. To my nose, it is in the same category as some niche or very expensive perfumes hinting at the exotic elements of the Orient or as some balmy Guerlains in the Les Absolus series. The rose and patch combo makes this a ‘modern chypre’ I suppose, but my experience is a deep, rich and complex floral sitting on a creamy, balmy base that I often come across in these exotic scents of the orient. Whatever the perfume pyramid, this is how it has carved itself into my scent memory and is slowly becoming addictive.
Elie Saab is a shape shifter on my skin, with different phases giving me different feelings and experiences. It has a sweet, rich, well-blended rose, which is neither dusky nor super candied. The patch is recognizable but clean, transparent and even airy with menthol elements. And there is also a transparent, slightly darker side to it like in some fruity florals or florientals with a bit of ‘noir’ element in them. It may sound medicinal described this way but combined with the creamy sandalwood, there is this soft, creamy, milky feeling to it, which softens it all. It feels like a modern and expensive oriental rose on an amber and myrrh base. Not one bit tired despite the heaviness of the notes. This is the waft that I find addictive after I have worn it for a couple of hours.
Le Parfum Royal lasts and lasts on my skin and it is also a sillage monster if you choose to use it like that. It is not the easiest perfume to wear IMO. However, these perfumes have the potential to become one with some wearers, and then they smell so soft like a fragranced skin scent that becomes a personal signature. I’m not that person and Le Parfum Royal will always be a big perfume with a significant statement for me. Still, I find it versatile. Like I can wear it during a weekend escape by the fireplace, eating chocolate or drinking cognac. I can wear it to a formal event or while taking a walk in the forest trying to see some fragrant herbs. There is something both rustic and luxurious in it. It was not instant love but I appreciate its complexity. Kudos to Elie Saab for coming up something that is quite extraordinary by designer standards. I wish I did not find the bottle so tacky though.
