always was too expensive. The fragrance is wonderful, but my overall rating is impacted by the affordability issue.

This is a wonderful perfume and so inexpensive now. It does remind me a bit of Opium and also Anne Pliska! It starts out a bit more like Opium – somewhat incensy and resinous and sharp (no incense really though) and it has an earthy vibe that reminds me of chypres. But it is softer and sweeter than Opium and much more wearable. It is very close to Anne Pliska IMO. The difference for me is that Pliska becomes overwhelmingly patchouli and KL does not. It leaves behind only a soft spicy sweetness. It is also somewhat similar to Fendi Asja to me. I think my sample must be the edp because the edt I have is much sharper and less smooth. I would not rate it as highly. Here are the notes from Osmoz:
Top note : Aldehydes, Orange, Bergamot, Spicy Notes
Middle note : Clove Bud, Pimento, Cinnamom, Ylang-Ylang
Base note : Labdanum, Vanilla, Patchouli, Civet
A beautiful spicy, sweet oriental!
Edit: I have purchased bottles of this in edt and edp and neither compare to the sample I had. They are both too sharp. hmmm Deducting a lippie for now.

I wore this scent many years ago and have recently rediscovered it. Loved it then and love it now. Unlike so many fragrances that have been “reworked” from the original, this one has stayed true, which is more than I can say for Lagerfeld’s original Chloe. (This should also be a warning that if you didn’t like KL before, you won’t like it now!) On my skin, KL does not possess that “off” note that I find in many perfumes…you know the one I’m talking about: where the perfume is heading straight for perfection and then suddenly veers off the track, leaving you feeling sick at the trainwreck you’ve just witnessed. Apparently it DOES possess this trait for other reviewers, but luckily I didn’t have that problem. It is a warm, soft, spicy fragrance that reminds me of cloves and dark cinnamon sticks in oranges. Perfect for cozying up in front of a fireplace on a cold winter’s night, but also very sensual for a night out anytime of the year. Love it.

Here are the notes (from perfumebay): “orange spices, cinnamon, orchid, amber, vanilla and clove.” I should adore this. I got this unsniffed, absolutely serene and secure in the knowledge that, from the notes, I could only love it.
I didn’t. My dislike would seem to me irrational if Rocki, in her review, didn’t voice the same response. KL is spicy, not necessarily a watered down opium, but in the same family certainly. But there is a sickening edge, a sharpness that feels cheap and wrong in my nose. Perhaps the orchid takes the blend off — orchid can be a very sharp, bright, harsh floral. There is no real “orchid” smell, or absolute, it is really just an accord (an agreed-upon version of what orchids would smell like if they DID have an absolute). Sometimes that agreed-upon version is kind of cheap and soapy — a lilac/violet/carnation blend has been my impression.
I think what isn’t working for me is the rich, resinous, dark quality of the spices butting heads with a soapy, overbright orchid floral. I’m sorry, and would have loved to love this (esp. at the price!) but I can’t.

This fragrance is a classic for me. Very oriental/spicy, with a drydown that emphasizes the cinnamon and sandalwood notes. As another reviewer noted, it’s a similar scent to Opium, only without the bright fruity notes, which is fine by me. This gives this perfume a crisper feel, without the cloying sweetness.
My one (minor) annoyance is the packaging, which I dislike. The gray colors on the label and top evoke a male appearance for this very feminine perfume, and I hate the plastic-y look. Lagerfeld could do so much better with product presentation, and they should.

I read the reviews on another perfume review forum, and most everyone loved this. The notes seemed to be what I would like, no fruit or flowery stuff. I ordered it without testing it first, and big mistake. I was so diappointed. There’s something in this scent that I just don’t like, that ruins it for me. It has a soapy smell, which I don’t personally like. Dolce & Gabbana (red cap), Passage de Enfer, and a couple others have that, either you like it, or you don’t. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

This strikes me as a slightly watered-down version of Opium. Largely the same notes, the same slightly unpleasant phase in the drydown (on my skin anyway), but more “moderato” than “fortissimo”… less of a statement than Opium but easier to wear in a public space (or during the daytime) – a diva in a gray business suit, the spangled top, dark lipstick, and false eyelashes demurely hidden away in her handbag until the right moment comes. And a bottle of Opium to give KL a bit of oomph at night without seeming to be wearing something else.
