This is the interesting information that comes on the card with the fragrance. Review is below this:
“In 1967 an innovative marketer and former horticultural student Dam Morgan had an idea for a lilac fragrance. He de designed, developed and manufactured a high quality scent which has been described as “an amazingly true essence of the Lilacs at their peak”.
The selection and testing of rare oils took many months. Skilled perfumers and research chemists at the world renowned International Flavors and Fragrances were commissioned to crat this essence. The project was to develop a not too heavy, not too sweet artistic success.
The director of Highland Park and his staff unanimously selected Highland Lilac as the fragrance most representing the Rochester Lilac at its peak. This is more than a fragrance; it is indeed a veritable breath of Spring found only in Highland Lilacs.
Highland Lilac is one of America’s finest perfumes. Proclaimed the Lilac Capital of the World’s official fragrance, it has won national and international gold medals. It has been presented to 11 first ladies of our country and their accolades place the fragrance among our national treasures. The romance of the Lilac, however, is global in its nature.
In Spring, the rare double flowering and other special varieties of Lilac buds and blossoms are harvested, collected and tested each year to determine and to make sure the perfumers and chemists have the exact amount match with the original formula. The juice must have a fresh Lilac scent with a sensual dry down! Each year only a limited quantity is produced. This essence has been cherished by many generations of Americans as the true essence of Lilac. It’s classic sophistication continues into the 21st century.
The Lilac has been cherished by evey generation of Americans. In Mount Vernon both the Custis and the George Washington families were among its fanciers. Thomas Jefferson planted Lilacs in his personal garden. Many of our poets and writers have written about their traditional popularity and fondness for the fragrance. Lilac’s popularity has continued to grow each year at Rochester’s Lilac Capital of the World Lilac Festival at Highland Park. This world famous collection was started in 1890. It now covers 22 acres in this famous park located in the County of Monroe, within the renowned Flower City of Rochester, New York. Each May thousands of visitors from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America come to view the world’s largest collection of lilacs—more than 550 varieties—marvel at their enchanting beauty and to be captivated by the sensation of the unique Highland lilac fragrance.”

This far exceeded my expectations. If you love the scent of lilac, this is it. No, Pacifica is not as good or better, it’s not even close. And no, Frederic Malle En Passant is not in any way similar to this nor do either of the above last as long on your skin, at least not on mine. I love lilac and this to me is about as close you can get to standing there and smelling actual blooms. It does not smell synthetic and it does not small like an old lady’s perfume as stated in a review below. Order a sample from their website, try it. If you don’t like pure lilac then you wont like it.
It is just lilac, nothing else. No additional notes to change or dilute the beautiful scent of lilac from the time you apply it until it slowly fades away. It smells the same,it just weakens over a period of about 4-5 hours and smells wonderful the whole time. I was actually surprised it lasted that long. I expected to get 2-3 tops out of it. Excellent longevity and sillage…. pure, beautiful, soft lilac blooms and nothing else. My search has now ended. It can’t get any better because this smells exactly like lilacs. If you don’t like lilac or soliflores, then don’t get this. It is nothing like En Passant where you smell a faint hint of lilac for 3 minutes then the cucumber takes over, this is pure, unadulterated lilac.
I wish they also sold this in smaller roller bottles because it really doesn’t take much. 2-3 swipes with the plastic dauber in the sample bottle is all it takes for me.

I found out about this perfume about a year ago and it’s fantastic! I grew up in upstate New York not very far from Rochester where they make it, there were lilac trees everywhere and the heavenly smell when they’re in bloom is my favorite scent from childhood except maybe my mom baking brownies. It is really amazing how well this perfume captures the natural scent of lilacs! (the only other lilac type perfume I’ve tried was Pacifica French Lilac, which I found synthetic and cheap-smelling) Highland’s is pretty pungent when you spritz it on, but like other soliflores it doesn’t last very long and has to be re-applied after a few hours. I usually layer it over a little bit of Skin Musk oil at my pulse points which extends the longevity somewhat and also lends a warm, sexy depth to its intensely floral fragrance. The combination makes my BF frantic and I’ve been limiting use to “special occasions” in warmer weather (perfect for Spring) especially since it is a fairly expensive perfume. Highland sells a sampler size if you want to try it out.

This lilac is exquisite. I’m a fanatic when it comes to scents, however, I’m just entering the world of the soliflore. Lilacs are my favorite and they always remind me of my yearly summer sojourn to Mackinac Island in Michigan during the Lilac Festival in June. Lovely, light, and feminine, this version of lilac is lovely for summer. I’m very much into vintage fragrances, and I’ve been wanting to try Caswell-Massey’s version, but this lilac is too good to pass up and I feel it’s worthy of a full bottle by far. I’m not a super floral-y fan, as I find such very cloying. Not so with this. I’ve purchased many fragrances, some upwards of $125, but this in my opinion is lovely and I’d gladly pay the $50 price tag. My beloved Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere is much more expensive, but not so suitable for summer, in my opinion. I’d love a matching body lotion, as I always layer my scents.

I bought it based on reviews. Should have got a sample first. It’s way overpriced for what you get, both the amount and quality (bottle is ugly as well), and got hardly any staying power or sillage. Pacifica lilac is much, much better truer lilac, and some etailers have great lilacs for only a few dollars as well. This one smells like a old lady perfume. I gave it to my grandmother. Luckily I could, otherwise it would have been a total waste of money. Customer service on their site is nonexistent. I emailed and got no response.

I ordered several samples of this right before I left on a trip to Russia. I got there in the middle of lilac season so I could compare the scents — this perfume is definitely as close to the real thing as I’ve found. I may or may not reorder because of the price and the memories it holds for me but I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a lilac in a bottle. The only con to the perfume itself is that it doesn’t last very long.

Oh, wow! This smells just like fresh lilacs; my favorite scent 🙂 I’ve looked high and low for a beautiful, fresh (not sweet/fake) lilac scent. This fits the bill perfectly. My only wish is that the scent lasted longer. It’s gone in about 4 hours & I have to reapply. I bought a sample from their website $5.99. I’d like to get the full size ($49) but might try Caswell Massey ($22 on sale now) first – but they don’t have samples that I’ve seen.
Edit: I’ve now tried Caswell Massey & it’s horrible! I’m going to treat myself for my birthday & buy the full size from Highland Lilac! Iloooovvve it!!!

The most real, true, genuine, honest and evocative of any lilac scent I have ever used. Puts En Pssant, After My Own Heart, Lilac Lace, and Sha to shame if you want a true lilac scent fresh from May. You would be hard pressed to differentiate this fragrance from the actual bloom. Go easy! It’s powerful, And it lasts, lasts, lasts.

I also have nothing but praise for this fragrance, it truly captures the essence of lilac without being cloying or overly sweet, it is probably the closest you can get to capturing the elusive, pure scent of sweet lilacs. This scent reminds me of spring as I have a lilac bush in my backyard and every spring it comes to life, relivens the yards, and dresses the entire yard with its sweet smell. It also reminds me of the carefree days and purity of youth and it also reminds me of the Victorian era (I envision a Victorian backyard tea party). If you love the beautiful pure scent of lilac then head over to the Highland website and purchase a sample, you will be amazed at how close this scent comes to the real thing!

I stumbled on this perfume by accident. Someone had given me a Vermont Country store catalog and I looked at it for weeks. I had been looking for a lilac perfume that reminded me of a lilac tree I played under as a kid at my grandmothers house in New York. I figured if this is made in Rochester NY, the Lilac capital, then this may be as true to the scent as you can get. I ended up buying it from another store online for about 10.00 cheaper than the Vermont store. I am EXTREMELY happy with it and will purchase more in the future. The bottle itself is simple, the packaging it comes in is rather elaborate but pretty. The scent lasts all day. I love it!

I am generally not a floral type of gal when it comes to my perfume, except when we’re talking about lilac. A large part of this is emotional for me. Lilacs immediately transport me to my youth and my dearly departed Mom, not in a sad morbid way but in a vivid, beautiful, safe and happy way. When I smell lilacs I think of some of the best times of my life. We had a very long row of purple and white lilacs in our backyard and every spring that smell was absolutely intoxicating. The entire house was perfumed of that scent, so sweet, crisp and haunting. Highland lilac perfume is that smell. It is pretty much as close to that smell as I have ever experienced in my life since those times. It’s so pure and captures the essence of lilacs so vividly. It’s almost unbelieveable that something could come this close without having to rub the actual flower on yourself. For just a bit of history here, highland lilac perfume was created in 1967 by a former horticultural student. His goal was to create a fragrance that would be and “amazing true essence of lilacs at their peak”. This is made in Rochester NY, the “lilac capital of the world” where there is a festival each year and this perfume is made for the yearly harvest. The harvest is tested to make sure that everything is consistent with the original formula and a limited amount is produced every year. They simply call this “perfume. No EDP. EDT….it’s wearing like something between an EDP and a parfum. Good lasting power. I got this from highlandlilac.com . Price is $49 per one ounce bottle, with tax and shipping it topped out at $60. Worth every penny if you are a lilac fan.
