I love rose. Seriously, it might actually be my favourite perfume note/ingredient. You may call me a white flower kind-of-a-guy but at heart, I’m a beautifully blooming rose? I can’t get enough and my collection is ever-expanding with gorgeous roses across all olfactory families.
Elisabethan Rose was originally launched in 1984 and it was a perfectly pretty, if not a tad too light, rose with a prim attitude. I didn’t care for it particularly, nor did I hate it. This Elisabethan Rose however – the Elisabethan Rose of 2018 – is an entirely new fragrance and it would be fair to say that Penhaligon’s have brought it bang up to date with a very modern composition that plays with the classic idea of a rose but injects the sweetness and spaciousness demanded today. They call it a rose “fit for a Queen” with “a most commanding presence”. But is this a stoic rose fit for the pale-faced Elizabeth I or something softer and more corgi-friendly a la Elizabeth II? There’s only one way to find out…
The Notes
Top: Hazelnut Leaf, Almond Oil and Cinnamon
Heart: Red Lily, Rose Centifolia Oil and Rose Absolute
Base: Vetiver, Musk and Wood
Elisabethan Rose starts out quite spicy. It has a crispness that comes, not from citrus, but from greenery and pepper. Cinnamon adds a fiery warmth, creating a bridge between rich greenery and spice, and a beautiful rose accord. The rose is vivid, announcing itself in a glossy shade of ruby red. There’s a jammy quality to this rose – it feels juicy and sweet, almost as if the rose petals have been brushed with a thick glaze of strawberry jam (yum). It’s sticky and warm with the rose bringing a crisp bite that prevents things from becoming too sickly – it really is a nice balance. There is also a freshness to the rose which makes me think of scooping up a handful of freshly picked rosa centifolia petals and burying your nose right in them.
The longevity is impressive and Elisabethan Rose hums along, singing its rosy little song for many hours. As the petals slowly drop off, the fragrance reveals a base of dry woods with the suppleness of sandalwood folding gently into clear, rose-accented musks. I don’t get any of the promised vetiver, which would have perhaps added a nice green, earthy touch, but for the most part I enjoy the transition from full one rose jam to a simple breeze of rose droplets in the base. It’s incredibly satisfying.
Elisabethan Rose is a perfectly lovely rose and it has enough character to hold interest in a world filled to the brim with rose fragrances. I particularly enjoy its sticky, jammy quality, which feels quite enjoyable on a sunny day, almost as if one has turned themselves into a fresh jam roly-poly. Lol. Does it stand out as an amazing rose? No, but it has its merits and I find the tightrope walk between the garden rose and gourmand rose exhilarating at times. If, like me, your collection is already stocked with roses of all kinds then you may want to give this one a miss however, if you’re still looking for that perfect rose then I’d certainly recommend giving Elisabethan Rose a sniff. Especially if you demand a fragrance fit for royalty!

I sampled this at Saks in beverly hills and wasn’t blown away by it. However, over the next few days I kept getting wafts of it from the little scented piece of paper she sprayed. It smelled amazing and really different and unique from the other rose scents that I wear. (Sa Majestie le Rose by Serge Lutens, red roses from Jo malone and Le Ombre from dipqyque). Its very light, very clean and smells the closest to what an acutual rose smells like of any perfume I have come across. I bought this to wear on my wedding day which is in a few days! I have been wearing it non-stop since I bought it though and have gotten many compliments. The store manager at Jimmy Choo on rodeo drive loved it. I was also wearing Jo malone orange blossom lotion so I think the mix of the two was rather divine. Will definitely purchase this again when it runs out!!

This is an excellent pure tea rose scent, the soapy kind that lingers on your hands after washing with expensive English rose scented soap or handwash. Reminds me of the English brand Crabtree & Evelyn.
It’s very linear with a touch of sandalwood and musk. My colleague asked me where was the potpourri fragrance coming from, ha. Perfect for layering!

Already went through several bottles of this fragrance. It is important to know that I normally do not enjoy fragrances – I don’t use them very much and heavy smelling ones cause me headaches and cause my allergies to act up.
This fragrance, however, is different. Rose scented products are my absolute favourites because I love roses and their fresh scents. This one smells like fresh roses! It is very light and barely there, only the subtle scent of roses.

Oh Dear Jesus, this is one of the most atrocious musty old rose perfumes ever. I guess I am just not a fan of this brand at all. I thought they all smelled like cheap drugstore perfumes that have been sitting in a drawer for the past two decades. This smell almost reminds me of a funeral parlor or something like that. I prefer well blended florals that smell more airy and luxurious.

I love geranium and before I smelled Elizabethan Rose, I had no idea that geranium would go so well with roses! It is simply divine. The other rose scent by Penhaligon’s is Victorian Posy. While VP is complicated and exotic this is sweet and delightful (imagine orange blossom honey kind of sweetness, not those overly sticky corn syrup sweet if you know what I mean). Both scents are lovely on their own and because they smell so nice together (I held one cap in each hand to one nostril) I have tried mixing the two and the outcome is equally amazing. Many reviewers had commented that the lasting power is poor, well may be because I live in a cold country I can still smell it on myself 5-6 hrs day later. And when combined VP with ER I can still smell it from my wrist 24 hours later. YMMV. Top note: Geranium // Middle note: Rose // Base note: Sandalwood

I smelled this at a Penhaligon’s in London and couldn’t get the scent out of my head, so of course this is a positive review. On my box, it is printed that the top note is geramium; the middle rose; the base sandalwood. It’s not a really attractive reading to me; I prefer lighter things, like Ralph Lauren’s Romance in the winter and Clinque’s Happy in the spring. Penhaligon’s Elizabethan Rose, however, smells, at first, very sweet and ultimately youthful. The sandalwood is definitely apparent as an afterthought; there’s a slight musk, a hint at sophistication, which elevates the rose-y scent above the pure sugaryness of, say, essential oils. It isn’t as long-lasting as I would’ve liked, but I’d get a whiff well on into the night. The packaging is okay; in a simple, clear glass bottle with an antique-looking sticker topped by a glass cap and a mauve-colored bow. It’s difficult with fragrances; it’ll never smell the same to, or on, two people, but I liked thise one best out of Penhaligon’s choices (their Ellensia was rather nice too, but as I went back specifically for this, I had to get the Elizabethan Rose.)

Lovely fresh TEA rose smell, very girlie, linear, rather fleeting on my skin, but quite realistic, much like the actual pink McCartney roses in my garden! I also like Jo Malone’s Red Roses and Creed Fleur de The’ Rose Bulgarie as smelling very much like dewy, fresh roses. Sweet, slightly wine-like when wet, clear, lightly fruity without being ‘jammy’. There is none of that dried petal or potpourri smell that you get from some other products in the drydown.
It’s fragrance is much less *In Your Face* than Crabtree & Eveyn’s “Eveyn” IMO, tho THAT is a very good repro of the actual David Austen rose of the same name(I’ve grown them). What I like best about Penhaligon’s Rose is that it smells less like chemicals and more like a living flower, albeit an idealized one. Packaging is very pretty and looks like something a Gibson Girl would have on her dressing table. I also have the Eliz. Rose bath gel, which is quite nice and runs true to scent.

Penhaligon’s Elisabethan Rose is frankly disappointing and to me smells like Tea Rose. The drydown is nice enough, but between the price and the opening notes which seem too sour, my recommendation for a good rose scent would be Crabtree & Evelyn’s Evelyn Rose or even Jo Malone’s Red Roses. Pen’s Elis Rose has good staying power on my skin and is definitely rosy, but as those first few molecules do their thing after I spritz it on, well, I just hold my breath. Those notes are like sour rose water. But they do pass. Still, this isn’t terrible, but for the price I was expecting something that would knock my socks off, and this didn’t do that.

This is a very simple, true rose scent. Very light and with a touch of green in it. However, it smells like a number of other rose scents I have smelled. Nothing wonderful or unique about it. Nice, but I would pass.
