I bought a vintage 250 ml flacon from the mid-70’s that was stored dark and dry. It’s even better than the vintage mini I purchased first. The citrus top notes pop more in than the mini. Then, the herbs de provence subtly reveal themselves. Finally, the oakmoss introduces itself, and you recognize this fragrance as a wonderfully blended member of the Guerlain Family. When you allow to the fragrance to take you on its journey, you realize it’s akin to cousins like Mitsouko. It’s easy to see how it made Luca Turin’s Top 10 Citrus Fragrances and Top 10 Masculines. I have not tried the current formulation, but if you locate a well kept vintage formulation, don’t hesitate. Buy it. Guerlain can’t make a fragrance like this any longer, so realize that purchasing a bottle is like taking a step back in time that won’t disappoint. The oakmoss doesn’t make this a dirty citrus, as some claim. It provides a destination to which the citrus will lead you, and on the way, you’ll make a new friend. Opens with a bright, almost carbonated, one dimensional citrus lemon, almost candied, on me. (I have issues with some citrus). Dry down is thankfully more muted and interesting than straight lemon, but it’s traditional Cologne with muted spearmint and caraway mitigated by Amber. (It’s as if the mint and caraway were dried herbs, macerated to release sent rather than fresh ones). Those who want to experiment with Guerlain men’s fragrances will not find it as traditional masculine as Coriolan, an aromatic fougere given a second life and a much higher price point as The new L’ame d hero, but I think of cologne as an easier segue into modern unisex sensibilities. Dry down is soapy.
I do think Creed Bois de Portugal is more interesting, but in the Guerlain line up I probably would prefer to reach for Jicky which has an animalic base. Outside the Guerlain line up, I would have to retest again, but I think vintage Dior eau Savage (composed a decade before this, and famous for including radiant jasmine/hedione, basil and fruit) would also be more interesting. Mint has been used to great effect in men’s fragrance, but I almost prefer the mint opening of FM Geranium Pour Monsieur, because it mutes down to a supporting role rather than finishing off the base, as in Eau de Guerlain. For a bargain alternative that I actually prefer, try 4711.
The Eau de Guerlain that I have is an older miniature in good condition. I didn’t think this was discontinued.

A very fresh clean scent. The citrus lemon note lasts throughout, though it is not a “long lasting” fragrance. It is nice to reapply though! This is a great unisex type scent.
Top notes are fruity notes, basil, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are caraway, carnation, sandalwood, patchouli, lavender, jasmine, mint, caraway, bergamot and rose; base notes are amber, musk, oakmoss and neroli.

I have a bottle of Eau de Guerlain I bought about 10 years ago. It is definitly a unmistakable 5 star colonge, the best citus scent ever. I recently tested the latest Eau de Guerlain and it was not the same juice. The top notes smell similar but it turns into fake lemon sugar after 10 minutes just like L’occitane Verbena (which I hate). Thankfully, the fake lemon sugar fades away after another 30 minutes. The drydown is still nice but thinner and sweeter compared to the older version
I’d give the new version 3 lippies and I will not buy it.

I was kind of surprised by reviews of Eau de Guerlain, and decided to chime in on one point. I think that EdG has unusually strong staying power. It lasts for hours on me. I am on my third bottle, and this has never varied. I think that it must be different for different people. I would encourage someone who likes the scent, but doesn’t want to pay for something that is not long lasting, to sample. BTW, I have never been to the French Riviera, but when I wear this I can imagine I am there. It is also a great scent for a snow storm.

The perfect cologne, like a favorite pair of jeans, is largely a matter of perfect proportions and solid construction rather than stylistic excitement. In that sense, Eau de Guerlain, with its more recent competitor Eau de Cologne from Chanel, will stand as the platonic ideal. Compared to most Guerlains, Eau de Guerlain is the soul of simplicity, and yet its composition is so balanced, so suave, and surprisingly deep for a cologne, as if the house’s sophisticated aesthetic has merely been relaxed rather than abandoned. The tart juices of lemon and bergamot are never too sweet, never too sour—dry, yet bracing. The accents are restrained, you must sniff throughly to detect them: the mint adds a tingle, the basil a vegetative heat, the jasmine a delicate floracy, the carraway some muted spice, and below it all, a rich drydown of sandalwood-tinged vetiver, so that even when the citrus has faded away, Eau de Guerlain retains a mannerly presence. For all the solar notes, it never bids for your attention, not even a quietly voiced bon mot, but listens calmly and thoughtfully, as if what you have to say is important. Like all good listeners, it is easy to dismiss, easy to take for granted, but when the world is grown too much, too full, the clarity of Eau de Guerlain shines through.

Strong clear citrus that leans masculine, though either sex can wear it. I imagine this in winter might be a bit chilly, but for summer, it would shine.

This is an amazing citrus fragrance. Starts off with a bright blast of lemon and dries down to a combination of woody lemon oil with a touch of spice. Much more complex and delicious than your typical citrus scent. This would be wonderful for the summer. I’ll be purchasing a bottle for sure.

If you’re looking for a nice summer fragrance, look no further. I have been wearing Eau de Guerlain for ages and it never fails to make me feel good when I put it on. It’s a citrus-y scent, but the other notes in it round it out so beautifully. I think there is a touch of oak moss in it which I adore. This fragrance is not as long wearing as others I wear, but it’s a citrus and it’s an EDT so I don’t mind reapplying it throughout the day. I wear Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien and Eau de Sud as well as Bvlgari Eau Parfumee and the original Cristalle Chanel in the hot weather as well, but Eau de Guerlain beats them all hands down. I always get compliments when I wear it. Give it a try!
