This parfum undergoes quite a fantastic transformation on my skin.
At first it smells quite spicy ; I imagine it must smell of saffron and oudh (unfortunately I don’t know what oudh, or even saffron, smell in it’s pure, undiluted form). Suffice to say that the scent is pleasant, not too medicinal, masculine or pungent. Initially I can’t smell any rose but slowly rose gains on prominence and the spicy notes move into the background until I’m left with a pure, velvety rose at drydown.
I love Dark Rose best in its middle, spicy-rosy stage of transformation-if it smelt like this all the time, I might even consider getting a FB.

I think Dark Rose is a phenomenal rose – fruity petals crushed using a pestle and mortar in an apothecary at midnight. It is as rich as purple velvet, but yet there is something wet about this fragrance – bleeding rose flesh. The balsamic, oudy centre is far softer than the Montale fragrances this is oft compared to; I actually prefer this gentler, less medicinal take. There is just enough pepper in Dark Rose for it to seem savoury and interesting. The saffron succeeds in making the concoction feel colonial and historical. I’d put it somewhere between Eau Suave and the similar Montales.
For me, wearing Dark Rose is an emotional experience. It is lush, radiant and enigmatic. Stunning.

Practically identical to other rose/leather/wood/resin scents out there. I swapped for a decant of this only to find out that it is very hard to get. Get yourself one of the Montale Roses instead and save yourself the trouble. This is not bad (it’s actually ok), but it is nearly identical to –but not as good as– Montale’s. While Montale’s Rose is relatively easy to get, this isn’t. This smells a little cheaper than Montale’s and bears a slight resemblance to Rose scented Wizard Room spray. Trust me… Montale is the way to go.
