Freshly cut cedar. Almost sparkling. With a waxy dry down that thankfully is not one of SLs uber honeyed caramelized endings. Refreshing, crisp, yet not such a high note as to be headache inducing. Definitely unisex and modern. No chypre aftertaste. Not a dark fragrance. And, for SL layering purposes, I think this is as versatile as Ambre Sultan, as this could be used as a base for any floral, smoke, tobacco, wood, Vetiver or gourmand. Not powdery or cloying at all. Agree with dhingy below and Fpih (that there is no rum). Thankfully, I also don’t get much imortelle; I think wearing SL jeau de Peux cured me of any fondness for immortelle or gourmands altogether. For a wine analogy, I think of this as a crisp white.
I don’t get oak from this. However, I prefer Andy Tauers LAdDM.

A gorgeous, almost purely woody fragrance. I smell some of the rum and beeswax, but mostly this is wood, wood and more wood. But it’s too gorgeous to be boring; instead, it is majestic as the oak tree it is named for. What it brings to mind is golden light seeping in between tree trunks and through leaves. Incredibly beautiful.

This is going to sound absurd but Chene smells like ceder wood and Smarties candies to me.

Awful. There are two things it reminds me of: a toy from the early 80s called a Wacky Wallwalker that was a little rubbery octopus that you threw at the wall and it would stick and crawl/tumble down while sticking to the wall. And it had a disturbing smell. And this smell also reminds me of a cantaloupe or honeydew if you take all the fresh, fruity or sweet aspect out and just leave the disturbing bit.

Not really a fine fragrance at all, more of a smell that reminds me of a cross between fenugreek, pencil shavings and old school pharmacies/hospitals. With so many wonderful woodsy fragrances both niche and mainstream on the market, I don’t know why anybody whould shell out money for Chene, unless they are a hardcore S.Lutens fan.

As everyone already said, this is a wood fragrance; not resinous, but like white wood freshly cut. And after an hour or more, a bit of honeyed sweetness comes out as well. But you know what? Honey on me, always smells clean and fresh; very unlike amber’s earthy, sticky sweetness (I adore amber mind you). As for the rum, comparing it to Idole by Lubin which I also have, there’s simply no rum at all; at least not for me. So, in the end, sweetness and all, this is a very clean, fresh, outdoor-ish kind of perfume, a bit more masculine than feminine but still unisex. It’s the scent that you’ll wear to get through a hectic day at work, at the evening when trying to relax from a stressful day or when taking a walk out in the woods in the fall or winter. Lasting power is good bordering on very good and with a very nice sillage; I keep getting whiffs of it during the first 8 hours while moving around and in the beginning, I couldn’t understand what smelled so nice, until I realised it was me:) You see, when I first put it on it smelled quite sharp, but mellowed very nicely as time went by, so give it a little time to develop. Not a must have IMO, but it won’t go unused in my collection either.

Notes: cedar crystals, wood sap, black thyme, immortelle, beeswax, silver birch, rum absolute and tonka bean.
This fragrance opens with a woody note which at first is clear and sparkly, like fresh-cut wood and then becomes warm and resinous, like wood that has been left out in the sun to dry. Either way the cedar note is wonderfully-done and is enriched by other vegetal notes to give it depth and pungency. This is a very tranquil and evocative fragrance, perfect for slowing down from our hectic modern world. To me smelling this fragrance is comparable to taking a walk through the woods to collect my thoughts. As it dries down, the fragrance does not change much; it gets drier and more intense. Unfortunately, this fragrance does not last very long on my skin. After three hours it has burnt off most of its notes and all there remains is a pale woody shadow. It is nonetheless a gorgeous wood fragrance.

Weak, mild, cedar scent. I had high hopes for this because I love cedar so much. I was hoping to be overwhelmed with the scent of all things wooden. Cedar chests, and oak casks, the smell of a church full of wooden pews, or maybe of a fresh sap dripping tree.
The notes are lovely, but flat and subdued. It is such a mild scent, and it really only seems to have one faint single note that lasts only so long and then disappears. I don’t get any complexity, and without lasting power Chene just ends up smelling like a faint hint of cedar on my skin.
I would recommend Narziss over this.

Unrelentingly dry, smokey, woody and masculine. I can’t stop sniffing my wrist. Smells a bit like wine as well – wine that has aged in oak casks. It takes a while to soften – stays sharp and dry for the first two hours. Fantastic.

The moment I sniffed Chene, it immediately reminded me of a familiar smell and it was not a necessarily pleasant one. And then it hit me – Chene SMELLED EXACTLY like a “lavatory” on a Continental Airlines’ plane! You know- that weird plastic-y synthetic smell that is suppposed to replicate the smell of “fresh air” at 10,000 feet? Anyways, Chene turned my stomach and had me looking for the barf bag.
Here are the notes per The Perfumed Court: Chene is an eau de parfum, edp, and is a woody aromatic blend of oak-bark tannin, cedarwood crystals, birch, immortelle flowers, wood saps, Tonka bean, rum absolute, black thyme and beeswax.
