Notes from Fragrantica: Top notes are lavender, mandarin orange and red currant; middle notes are coffee, incense and heliotrope; base notes are amber, patchouli, vanilla and mahogany.
Beautiful, warm, spicy, and cozy. Definitely unisex, although the opening smells and feels to me like classic ladies perfume–not vintage, per se, but just a smell from my past–a hug from my Sunday school teacher or my grandma passing me her hanky during church.
It evolves past that, but that haunting quality is still there for me. I suspect the amber and heliotrope are what is giving me that bit of powdery nostalgia…mixed with the lavender and coffee it definitely is evoking memories of days gone by. The incense and mahogany only enhance that feeling for me, and are also what make this more unisex. This is perfect for Autumn/winter—but I can see it blooming in the heat, if worn sparingly. All in all, a very successful blind buy and I’m glad I managed to snag it before it’s too hard to find.

Warning! – there’s a HUGE difference between the EDT and EDP. The EDT is a lavender-heavy, fairly boring fruity floral, a bit dusty before the fruit kicks in. The EDP, on the other hand, is one of the vanillic/powder/musky group, along with the latter half of SJP’s Covet, Trussardi Inside, Nanette, and Lalique’s Le Parfum.
Belle en Rykiel EDP uses a gorgeous base wash of coffee, with a strong midsection of wood. The wood is patchouli, but this isn’t in the least patchouli heavy. The overall impression is a sweet, warm powder, amber-based, vanillic, with an overlay of floral and a touch of smoke and a base of dry wood. Occasionally I get a touch of citric in the opening, but it’s not strong.
Belle en Rykiel EDT has no coffee, a barely noticeable amber note in the base, and lots of florals (orange flower, LOTV, rose, lavender) and fruits.
Apparently there’s another flanker, Bell en Rykiel Blue, which I haven’t smelled.

I tried this a while ago and dismissed it. Boy, was I wrong. It’s a grower. I like it better each time I wear it. Lovely.
Belle is a wonderful coffee fragrance on top of a vanilla & patchouli base. Because of the impression of coffee & patchouli, coupled with the lavendar on top, it has a tendency to go a bit acidic-medicinal at first, maybe even feel masculine. But as the top dissipates, Belle settles into a lovely “your skin but better” fragrance on me. I love how the incense peeks out but never dominates. The powder is soft and somehow feels that it’s in the background.
There are 2 reasons that this fragrance is highly rated at other perfumista sites: It’s excellent for the price (I paid under $20 for 75ml), and it’s quite different from the mass market. Also, the bottle is substantial and much more impressive in person than in pictures.
Definitely worth a test or two. Take some time to see if it grows on you. You’ll be happy that you did.

I find this to be a boring, semi-cloying fragrance. I love lavender, but the amber, frankincense and patchouli kind of kill Belle for me. It’s not awful, but I never find myself searching for this bottle.

I see a lot of reviews talking about lavender, and I guess I can smell a little lavender here, but what I notice most is FRUIT. I suppose it could be some trick of the heliotrope and vanilla, but my nose says fruit. Regardless of what’s causing it, this scent is much too sweet and fruity for me.

I like the smell of lavender…in my garden…on my grandpa…in my dryer. I’ve never liked it on my skin. This fragrance opens hugely LAVENDER, and almost sent me running. I gave it a couple of minutes, though, and was rewarded with an unusual oriental that I’m liking better every time I spray it. Warm, soft, spicy, except with that touch of lavender that keeps it from smelling like the other 50 FB orientals on my dresser. This one’s a sleeper, and the price is right. Give it a try.

If you loved Obsession, Poison, and Opium in the 80’s and grieved when it became unpopular to wear orientals, this will be for you.It also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and is available in my local mall.
A great evening fragrance. The oriental background is softened with an opening of lavender, and there is a bit of ripe fruit in the middle to soften it out and make it wearable for this decade.
Well done.

I am always drawn to this on other people but was on the fence when I sprayed some on myself. Nevertheless, I bought a bottle – positively thinking that I would wake up with a different chemistry and it would smell fantastic on me, too. Nope, that didn’t happen. My skin turns this into a super sweet concoction and the cold, breezy accord morphs into my grandfather’s shaving cream on me. Still, I’m not grieving as I found a tame version in Trussardi Inside, which I’m loving right now.

I have been contemplating buying this for a month or 2 ever since seeing it at marshalls and finally did when it went on clearence at $16. I am glad I did. What an interesting scent. It is odd. But it is also sexy AND sophisticated (rare). At first it is lavender, woods and liquorice(???) then smoky. Nice.

OMG! I just bought this off of Ebay, unsniffed and am I sorry I did that. On me, this smells like toothpaste. I was worried, what the lavender was going to do, now I know. Yuck, on me. Maybe someone else would do this perfume justice. I do think the more this dries down, the better, but I don’t like to wait for the drydown. I usually need to like the top & middle notes too. I promised myself, I wouldn’t buy without smelling it first, because I usually don’t end up liking them. Have quite a few bottles, that are sitting in my cabinet untouched. Waste of money! If you like lavender in your scent, then you would like this, but that’s one note that is not pleasant for me. This reminds me of a men’s cologne that my son has. (I think it is Valentino) Oh well…
