Granted, my makeup bag has dwindled over the years, but my collection of perfume – slowly, but surely – continues to grow. Back to Black is another welcome addition to my little perfume family.
It’s quite similar to two perfumes that I own already. Some may scoff at the comparisons, but it doesn’t take away from the loveliness of Back to Black in any way.
If you’re familiar with Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, they have a scent called O, that is combination of honey amber and vanilla – with an undertone of cherry.
And then there’s Fendi by Fendi, which has sadly been discontinued. It had the same cherry vibe to it, but it had that heavy dose of tobacco to keep it from veering into sugary sweet territory. If memory serves me right, it wasn’t so much a sweet earthy tobacco, but it had more of an artificial nicotine vibe. Granted, it was unique, but it wasn’t great.
In my opinion, Back to Black combines everything that’s great about these perfumes. The tobacco note is earthy and sweet, and doesn’t veer into nicotine territory. Plus it has those honey and cherry vibe that I loved from the Black Phoenix Alchemy lab blend.
Like both the perfumes mentioned above, it’s definitely a sexy blend. It’s certainly sweet, but not sickeningly sweet, like the gourmands on the market that reek of cupcakes and vanilla frosting.
Wearing it definitely garners a reaction, and several people leaned in to catch a whiff. Even my supervisor – who is normally a bit stand-offish by nature – felt the need to lean in.
I think it’s certainly worth the money.

One of ten samples I got from Surrender to Chance in a collection of niche perfumes. It’s my second favorite. Exceptionally warm, has a nice but not overwhelming incense, (although the first time I wore it I wrote in my notes that it opened a bit Magickal Garden) dries down to a wonderful amber-honey-tobacco smell. Lasts all day, sillage such that I can smell it but not such that it knocks anyone over. Somewhat in the same class as Bois Blond by Parfumerie Generale. Wore it three times, liked it more each time.

This is the first by Kilian fragrance that I have tried. I recieved samples of B2B and Love.
B2B is definately a try before you buy fragrance. According to the rest of the reviews it seems to react different to each person’s body chemistry.
On me there is no tobacco note at all. No rose or rose water at all. (thankfully. I can’t stand rose fragrances) I can’t even imagine scrubbing this one off. It worked so beautifully with my chemistry that I couldn’t pull my nose away from my wrist without a happy breath of relief that I have found a fragrance like this.
Back to Black (on me) is along the same lines of what Dior Hypnotic Poison does with my chemistry. B2B has a , warm, honey, sexy as hell richness. Much like HP(sexy as hell), instantly taking me to a cabin in the woods with smooth, buttery leather furniture. A fireplace roaring with two glasses of wine waiting for an uninterrupted evening.
Unlike HP, I would, and will attempt to wear this in warmer weather.
If it works for you it is so sexy. My husband likes it, which says alot.
If the honey note is overpowering,or too linear, blend it with Love. They are two different types of “sweet” and compliment each other nicely.
My only wish is for better sillage. But that might just be me. Most common sillage-bombs are very tame on my skin.
Hope it works for you.

I so wanted to love this one. Between the reviews, the notes and a dear swapping friend recommending it, I was maybe too excited. Anyway, what I got was rotting rosewater with what might’ve been a lovely soft warm incense base if the rotting super-sweet roses went away. They never did. It was wretched on me and I had to scrub it. Sad. Since this came from a friend who wears it well, I am going on the assumption that her sample was good, it’s just my chemistry that argues with the blend. I’ll pass.

I am disappoint. I love cherry tobacco notes — but found this really wanting. Lasted less than an hour on me, and never got more than a bit of red fruit. I’ve had more nuance and longevity from Bath & Body Works products. I suppose I am lucky to have such cheap taste!
Note: I tested this from a dab vial — I am willing to believe that you get a better experience from a blast of spray, but probably not a $200 better experience.

I knew that when By Kilian did a very generous sample giveaway on Facebook and I was a lucky recipient that I would love at least one of the fragrances in my sample pouches, back to black was the one for me.
It is sweet, very sweet at the start, which I did not expect to like, this is then tempered down with the swirls of cherry tobacco smoke and vanilla, this is the bit that I love (I am and always have been a non smoker but I can still appreciate a tabacco note in a fragrance, after all, its only a plant)
I admit that the perfume seems to be on the expensive side but at least you can buy a re-fill for half the price which is not only very economical but environmentally friendly as well.
I did buy the travel bottle (when you have as many perfumes as I do 30mls is actaully a good amount) and should I ever use it all up I can just buy the re-fill, you see I can totally justify the expense.
Back to Black for me has above average sillage and lasts the full day.

My wonderful husband took me on a shopping trip to buy me perfume for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. We headed off to the department stores in Manchester, and after cruising Selfridges and House of Fraser and spraying loads of sample cards (he’s a very lovely and patient man!) we visited Harvey Nichols where I spotted a “By Kilian” counter and squeed like a small girl as I didn’t realise this perfume could even be found in the UK.
I have wanted to try Kilian’s “Love” and “Back to Black” for a while, ever since reading reviews of them. The first one I sprayed was Back to Black, and I actually said “I’ve found it, I know it’s the one!” I actually sprayed it straight onto my wrist as I knew it would work for me. And it is THE most heavenly warm, beautiful scent.
BtoB has the wonderful smell of pipe tobacco, fresh in a pouch, sweetened with honey and cherry and almond, all of these being favourite notes of mine. It starts off quite spicy, but mellows and rounds out quickly. It lasts and lasts and lasts on my skin and varies between honey and tobacco, sometimes smelling of one, sometimes of another with a slightly fruity/floral note (possibly bergamot, but not at all strong) which actually brings out the two base notes of the scent. It is a gourmand scent, but it’s not very gourmand-edible. It’s more on the Cacharel Gloria and Guerlain SdV end of gourmand (although less powdery) rather than the full on apple-pie style of Ambre Narguile.
It is just utterly delicious, and I left Harvey Nicks with the travel set thanks to my lovely husband. Luckily this is refillable, and I can definitely see a refill of this in my future.
I haven’t fallen this hard for a perfume for years!

Very nice. However, if I want tobacco, I’m going to SL’s Fumerie Turque. If I want honey, I’m going to Botrytis or Honey and the Moon. And Back ot Black is nearly all honey and tobacco. I didn’t like the combo of the two as much as I like them separately in the other fragrances mentioned above.

*Nice* scent, but if you want me to spend over $200 for 50ml you have to be more than merely *nice*. For having a name like Back to Black this is surprisingly tame. It starts off with barely-there skin musk and honey note that I initially despaired at, thinking I was anosmic to most of the notes. After 20 or so minutes the honey pushes out in stronger force alongside some vanilla…and stays like that. Indefinitely. Where are all these other notes?
On another note, Back to Black smells alarmingly similar to BPAL’s O/Womb Furie/Snake Oil, to the point where for a minute I wondered if Mr. Kilian might’ve ever visited the Lab and jacked their creations being that BPAL has been around much longer than By Kilian. The aforementioned Black Phoenix blends are actually more complex than Back to Black on my skin, so I would recommend those over this $225 overpriced juice.

Yes, warm honey and cherry tobacco but it very quickly dries down to cherry chapstick on my skin. Lasting power does not seem to be that great. I think it could be very lovable but for the price it is going for I am happy I am not in love.
After even more testing, this is like smelling lipstick… Perhaps a tame version of Habanita.
This perfume has a hard job, because it has to live up to its hefty price tag and judging by the reviews written by other people I don’t think it’s succeeding.
