   OK, it’s extremely subjective, this question of what smells good. I say that because goodness knows, Aventus is a hit. Such a hit that as of this writing, Creed is about to launch a new version while continuing to sell the current version. To me, though, Aventus is a tad nauseating. It opens quietly. It took about an hour for it to develop. When it did, there was the famed pineapple, the smokiness, and–for me, the deal breaker–the signature Creed animalic note that is so nauseating. It just doesn’t go with the sweetness. It reminds me of someone with bad breath who’s sucking a pineapple Life Saver instead of flossing and brushing. If you do like Aventus, the good news is that it lasts and lasts and has great projection.

   Advice: before shelling out nearly $500 for this, the price as I type these words, sample it, let it settle into your skin, give it a good hour or two, and then decide. If you love it, you’re in the majority on this one. If you don’t, feel free to join me in wondering what I’m missing.

   Agree with white countess below re her comparison to JCEs fragrances for Hermes.

   I really like Aventus (I have a very sizable decant purchased from a reputable on line decanting service). It’s nonconfrontational, office friendly, unisex and doesn’t smell cheap, synthetic or mainstream. Easy to wear. (I am a woman who happily wears many men’s fragrances and loves vintage extrait). I find most modern releases too sweet and gourmand.
   I don’t smell the musk, but I understand that a sizable percentage of population are anosmic to certain types of musk.

   This is apple, pineapple with citrus. Because it’s light weight and fruity, I mentally pigeonhole it alongside citrus, but it is wearable year round. weight wise, I rank it alongside Malles Bigarade concentrate, a very different fragrance. Ites not as sharp or heavy a scent as another summer favorite, a Galbanum opening scent, the original Germaine Cellier Vent Vert extrait. (Square bottle with stopper, NOT the one topped with celery fronds). I also have Galbanum citrus fragrances; citrus fruit chypres in the rotation; pinapple chypre on my list to retest (Aventus is nothing like Patou Colony, Caron Acasoisa either. And, Aventus is mild compared to the more opinionated Hermes orange vert; guerlain aqua allegoria pamplelune and atelier cedrat enirvant.

   I should also add that I have so many perfumes, including a vast quantity of exceedingly generously sized creed manufacturer samples. I believe Creed retails in very large bottles, so I cannot imagine buying a full bottle. If they sold 10 or 15 ml bottles, perhaps.

   Creed is, no doubt, one of our most historic perfume houses. They began in 1760, have been the official perfumers for no less than 10 Royal Houses and have made perfumes for famous figures and perfume lovers for 250 years. They have made scents for everyone from Eva Perone to Jackie Onassis. So far, my two favorite fragrances by them have been Royal Water and Irish Tweed, made for Princess Di and Cary Grant.
   I wore Neroli Savage for my wedding in Italy, a Mediterranean orange, and wore Royal Water solidly for a year.
   Having said all this, there are many perfumes (for much less money) that are every bit as beautiful and special. I had stopped wearing Creed in favor of more unusual and harder to find Indie perfume houses. But their latest, Aventus, is really lovely. It reminds me of many of the incredible scents that Hermes has been releasing recently, under the wonderful nose of Jean Claude Ellena. Aventus is Unisex, light, and perfect for warmer weather. It’s made after an emperor who made love, war and peace all on his own terms, all while riding on horseback. (!) However, it doesn’t smell like that to me at all. It’s for a man, but will smell amazing on a woman too.
   It has a light and fresh apple and pineapple feel and then underneath shares a woody kind of oakmoss layer. This is where Aventus’ sex appeal lies. Under all this sophisticated freshness, there is a *tiny* whiff of something musky.
   This is my favorite Creed in a really long time and worth a sniff.

   I believe this is Creed’s newest men’s fragrance, but was told that it can be unisex. I enjoy this one a lot, there’s a very sexy quality about it. It smells quite different on everyone and I didn’t like it for the first hour or two, but then the magic happened. And it seems like a scent that will definitely last and last without needing to be reapplied. It smells very similar to Hermes Merveilles, so if you like that one, you’ll love this. I don’t find the note description to accurately explain this fragrance at all. Mostly it smells like clean fresh leather (good in slightly kinky way), which almost reminds me of Coolwater for men (my fave men’s scent) and a hint of soapiness (like men’s Curve, my fave men’s scent when I was in middle school, lol). I also love the musk quality, like clean skin. When I sniff this the words that come to mind are clean, crisp, sharp, and seductive. I test drove it today and I am definitely going to pick up a small bottle. I want to play around with mixing it to make it a touch more feminine. I was thinking a tiny dab of TBS’s white musk.

   I love horses but I didn’t realize it’s almost an obsession. I seem to love all things horse-themed. This and the Hermes one both have a horse on the bottle, which is a strange coincidence. This scent would make a great gift for a man, but they should test it first because it’s very bad on some people.

   Top notes: Finest black currant, Italian bergamot, Calville Blanc apples, and a burst of royal pineapple.

   Middle notes: Exquisite roses with a complement of dry birch, Moroccan jasmine plus a hint of patchouli.

   Base notes: Musk with a touch of oak moss for depth, then ambergris and a dab of vanilla
