Aomassai has a rather puzzling opening consisting of a bright bitter herbal accord; at this point I’d expect it to evolve as a classic chypre rather than a gourmand.
10-15′ later an unusual fuzzy woodyness comes to join and that’s what I guess must be the hazelnut accord. Still don’t expect anything roasted – until the traces of incense kick in, that is! After that definitely gets warmer and cozier, somehow brings campfire logs to mind with just a hint of licorice.
I love it when a fragrance goes to unexpected directions and surprises with its evolution. This one in particular keeps a constant flow between contrasting accords and textures going.
The drydown is where the – non sticky – caramel smoothes things out taking the place of the remaining woody notes before fading as a spicy skin scent.
Overall Aomassai is a lot less gourmand than I expected judging by the notes and more of an atmospheric mildly sweet woody scent with green opening. Still a very interesting one which I’m glad to have tried.

This is wonderful, and I’m rating it five because although it’s not my favourite Parfumerie Generale scent, it’s still fabulous. I’m a big fan of this line, which excels in making gourmand scents that have qualities of the most tantalising desserts on the menu, whilst boasting a spoonful of quality quirk.
On my skin, Aomassai is like a burnt brulee, amidst the crackle of autumn leaves on a bonfire. The bitter orange, spice and hazelnut come through richly, making the scent warming on the skin. I get resin and incense too, but not a hint of licorice or vetiver, listed on the notes.
I know a man this would smell amazing on – my best friend – delicious under the collar of a white shirt.

The open of this is absolutely stunning, a remarkable burnt caramel woodsy smell, a bit like toasted old Angel but in the best way. If only it kept on that plane it would be an absolutely unique masterpiece, but I think Pierre must have chickened out; it quickly morphs into a lovely but less stunning sweet oriental sugar wood. I don’t mind, I just keep spraying it on my ‘Aomassi’ days, but am going thru’ it very quickly!

Notes: caramel, toasted hazelnuts, spices, vetiver, balsam wood, bitter orange, incense, liquorice, wengué wood, dried grasses and resin.
This fragrance opens with an interesting blend of woods, toasted hazelnuts and caramel. Incense and liquorice frame these notes and provide a salty-smoky contrast. Together with vetiver and various woods, incense dominates the mid development of the scent. The gourmand notes – nuts, caramel and orange – sweeten and balance the composition, but are no longer prominent. The more the fragrance develops, the more it loses substance and the woodsy notes give way to dried grass. Spices warm the last stages of the progression and create a beautiful woodsy-earthy dry down that is representative for the whole scent. Lasts 6 hours on my skin.

I love that this scent is a gourmand, yet not very sweet on me. The hazelnut and caramel accord sit on a base of the most perfect vanilla. I dont get the woods from this, just a delicious hazelnut coffee scent with a just the right amount of cream. Its warm and comforting. What you might smell in the air of a very quaint and classy coffee shop in……… What country makes the best coffee?

For the first five seconds, there’s a blast of something creamy that I almost mistook for sweetened condensed milk. Then, even before the alcohol has finished evaporating, it starts to smell spicy and chocolatey. Then when the alcohol evaporates completely, it smells just like a grass hut built on a framework of untreated lumber. And I’m standing inside wearing a grass skirt and wondering “Where am I, and how did I get here?”
Very few fragrances are quite this evocative and beautiful. The grassy smell is incredibly soothing, and all the individual notes smell natural and true, without the odd synthetic drydown that so many mainstream scents have nowadays.

Clearly this is a fragrance for which each experience is different. Those types of fragrances usually fall into some sort of favorite category with me, even when they don’t work for me. Luckily, Aomassai works for me. I love Parfumerie Generale on the whole, because they tend to have daring fragrances. By that I mean their creations are bold and seem to have a direction. Aomassai starts off with a blast of caramel and hazelnut. And it’s definitely a blast. I love it. The drydown is quite smooth and definitely delicious. There’s not a PG I’ve tried yet that I would say *isn’t* full bottle worthy. My favorite continues to be Bois Blond, but I’m certainly adding Aomassai to my collection as well. Notes: caramel, toasted hazelnuts, spices, vetiver, balsam wood, bitter orange, incense, liquorice, wengue wood, dried grasses, resin.

The initial burst of caramel, hazelnut and coffee is too sweet and overpowering. However, as it dries down, the scent becomes softer and less sweet.
In the end I can smell the vetiver quite clearly above the caramel and hazelnut notes, which adds a certain crispness to it and saves it from being completely feminine. I like it but not enough to buy it after all. I see people commenting how overpowering it is but on my skin this lasts only for 5-10 minutes. After that it stays so close to the skin that I can’t detect it, let alone others. When I bring my wrist to my nose I can see that it’s still there but oh, so faint… I’ll stick with my SL Un Bois Vanille for a burnt caramel scent.

Thoughts so far…
I have totally been locked in a humidor full of Ding Dongs.

Upon initial application I get a blast of cedar with something slightly sweet in the background. It smells like my father, who works as an arborist and loves cream cheese danishes. I was hoping for all the caramel, hazelnut, smoky gourmand yumminess because I normally like gourmands, but this was just all woods and sweet powder on my skin. I would definitely say this is a likable fragrance, but this is not something I would purchase, or contribute to the hype of.
