I read the one review that talks about everything smelling like grandma stuff and I felt nervous because I hate that smell, but I tried Alkemia anyway.
Listen y’all. I had a gift card and I got over 30 samples in the course of two orders. Each one smells absolutely unique/different from the others, and I love so many of them it has been a real challenge deciding which scents are “me”.
The customer service is great, the shipping is quick. I’m a person who gets headaches and skin reactions easily, I’ve had neither.
You have an option to pay an extra $2-3 for your sample pack and have it curated by the artist. I did that, and I loved what she chose for me.
So don’t be afraid of grandma smell – I’m picky as hell, and that’s absolutely not my experience.

I sampled some of Alkemia’s oils and they are really nice! All samples I tried had the perfect amount of throw and longevity, which is often hit or miss with indie perfumes for me. My favorites that I sampled: Ghost Fire, Sandscape, Smoke & MIrrors, Calliope, Trick or Treat, Carmen 7, Turquoise Trail, Blackberry Noir, Bacchante, and Roll in the Hay.
Ghost Fire: “A luminous attraction of ethereal white ambers. Hauntingly beautiful.” It was really nice–I was afraid the amber would be too much, but this is actually a really nice and feminine perfume. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of BBW Brown Sugar & Fig, with a bit more dimension. Nice.
Sandscape: “Sun warmed beach sand, Atlantic ocean breezes, the saline-aquatic scent of drying sea water on skin, and the faintest hints of tanning oil and seaweed.” This perfume oil reminded me A LOT of the natural oil version of Bobbi Brown’s beach perfume. However, the dry down of this perfume is WAAAAAY better than Beach perfume. I can’t really describe it other than to say that it seems like I can really smell the heat of a beach atmosphere on my skin!! Amazing! And so little goes a long way. Sandscape comes off as such a light breezy scent, but it lasts 5 hours + on my skin. I might be buying a full bottle of this one….
Smoke & MIrrors: “An elusive, smokey blend of burning wood, Madagascar Vanilla, and Tonka. We find this one to be elementally simple, but unusually mercurial and highly responsive to different skin chemistries… the vanilla and the smoke dance with each other almost continuously… sometimes the foreground is smoky, then sweet, then returns with sweetly smoky, then smoky.” This one seems to be quite popular from Alkemia. I like it, especially for layering. It is a very true scent of smoke & mirrors! However, I also don’t like it as much as I like Firebird’s perfume oil called Woodsmoke & Vanilla. So this wouldn’t be a full bottle purchase for me personally.
Calliope: “A beguiling divertissement of piquant clementine, orange blossoms, white orchid, sugared currants, tonka, and vanilla musk whirled with flirtatious teases of billowy cotton candy floss and kisses of saltwater taffy.” I am not usually a Pink Sugar or ANYTHING cotton candy fan. But I wanted to try this one since it seems to be another popular pick from Alkemia. It is nice…if you like the sugary, cotton candy scents! Not for me…But clearly, a well-blended perfume! It was exactly as I expected–a quality, cotton candy-ish fragrance!
Trick or Treat: “A grownup confection of black licorice, mandarin orange peel, caramelized brown sugar, bourbon vanilla, candied ginger, tonka bean, blonde patchouli, cedar tips, oakmoss, and sandalwood. Utterly sexy on both men and women…” I really like this one for its uniqueness. I get a lot of orange + smoke from this, and I would definitely say smoke instead of licorice–But others say they smell licorice! It is a nice uni-sex fragrance…I might be ordering a full bottle!!
Carmen 7: “An indecent proposal of succulently spiced pear, exotic lychees, decadent french pralines, bourbon vanilla, and crushed almond blossoms leads to a ménage à trois of gardenia, star jasmine, and magnolia illuminated by the afterglow of a sensuously musky amber.” This perfume is amazingly similar to a nice perfume you might sample from a magazine, knowing it is just to expensive to purchase. I am not sure what to describe it next to, but it is extremely pretty and feminine, and I definitely need a full bottle 🙂
Turquoise Trail: “A joyfully winding trip through high plateaus and mountains of the American Southwest. Cota (Navajo tea) infused with bergamot, mandarin peel, blackberry leaf, black currant, high mountain sage, grapefruit blossoms, orange flowers, petigrain, orris root, vetiver root, incense cedar tips, galbanum, tonka, and white sandalwood. Refreshingly clear like mountain air…” This perfume is really great because it is a fresh, unisex scent that isn’t your typical fresh air scent. I feel like I smelled an Annie Oakley perfume on vacation once, in a blue bottle (Morning Dew?) that reminded me of this….just a clean, slightly earthy, breezy scent.
Blackberry Noir: “A delicious, dark trinity – black berries, black tea, and sweet black musk. Mouthwateringly sexy.” I really like this one, and I may need a full bottle! It is a really nice combination of scents, and I feel like it smells like a bundle of berry scented incense sticks before they are lit to burn!
Bacchante: “The essence of an untamed spirit. High bush blueberries, wild ivy, Spanish lavender, aged oakmoss, tonka, decaying bark, and forest fungi.” I wasn’t sure on this one, but it turned out to be one of my favorites! I ordered several outdoor scents, trying to find one that felt like fresh air without too much flower, too much green, or too much berry. This is definitely it. And I have tried a lot of similar scents that just don’t get the mix right! I definitely want a full bottle of this. Pretty and feminine, and warm weather worthy!
Roll in the Hay: “A delightful romp through dried hay, fresh green grass, early summer wildflower honey, vanilla grass, vanilla leaf, and wild poppy.” I was most excited to sample this one. It is definitely true to scent in my opinion. A little thicker and heavier than I imagined, but you can definitely smell the hay, honey, and vanilla! It borders on being too mature of a scent for me…but I will definitely be trying it several times more and consider a full bottle purchase of this!
Overall, I loved sampling from this Etsy shop. I also love their prices–a little less pricey than other sellers on Etsy I have tried, and especially great sales from time-to-time. I think Alkemia has top quality for a handmade perfume for the price!! I definitely plan to try some more scents and order full bottles in the future from Alkemia.

I usually get a mixed bag reaction out of perfume oils, and Alkemia is just that for me. Some I love (Trick or Treat, Smoke and MIrrors, Hellcat, and one i had to scrub (Les Mysteres). Some just fail to excite me, but I admit I’m getting jaded with sheer mass of scents I’ve tried, mass market or niche. For the most part, Alkemia does well-blended, imaginative perfumes for a decent price and ships quickly and safely. I’m very pleased with the various purchases I’ve made from this company. I will definitely be going over to play again. Only four lippies because the percentage of scents I like enough to buy is low compared to the number I’ve tried. Again, that could be my over-saturation with the perfume oil market too. I play like this with Love Potions Magickal Perfumerie, Possets and BPAL as well. There are a bunch of Etsy folks worth exploringn too, but one only has so much money to throw around.
I’d also like to add that I have not had a bad experience with this company. There is a very unhappy review below that makes me wonder how things could’ve gone so badly wrong. Nothing I’ve tried, and I’ve tried many scents from this company, was bad, repulsive or rotten. I’ve also had no leaking samples and I’m a sample junkie. and agreeing with another reviewr, Alkemia has a much better track record with me than BPAL, who often miss the mark completely and have so many scents that I get a headache looking at the site anymore.

My order from Alkemia arrived yesterday. I ordered Farkas and Ghost Fire, and I received the samples As Dark Things Are Meant to be Loved, and The Raven. For the record, shipping was fast and painless. Even if I hated everything I ordered this time, I would undoubtedly order again because of the prices, the great descriptions and beautiful imagery, and the impressively fast shipping. These guys seem organized.
I’ve only worn Farkas out so far and I’m so amped about these perfume oils that I want to return and update my review as I get a chance to really wear them. For the record, my absolute favorite note is amber (my all time fave is Kiehl’s Amber essence) and I avoid overtly floral, fruity or sugary scents. I love perfume but am not a sophisticated perfume reviewer so forgive me when I show it.
So far I’ve been wearing Farkas. It’s described on Etsy, ‘A unisex blend of savagely sexy skin musks and deliciously sinister leathers.’ I’ll admit I was drawn in by the awesome wolf illustration on the store and the aggressively ugly name. Also I really enjoy Tuscan Leather but can’t justify the cost, so I wanted to try something leathery.
The leather is strong with this one. That’s overwhelmingly what I smell. It reminds me a fair bit of Tuscan Leather but more black than green, if that makes sense? To be honest I was expecting a bit more of a balance with leather and the other notes, but I still like it. I also get a slightly spicy scent that almost reminds me of Christmas, which I’m not such a fan of but it’s subtle. The scent is strong too, like you don’t want more than a dab. Wearing it to work today I was almost a little self conscious because it might smell like I’m moonlighting as a dominatrix (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but so long as I use a light hand and don’t waft it every time I pass someone it’s probably okay. Anyways, I’m a novice with leather scents but if you love leather or the idea of making people wonder what the heck it is that you get up to in your off hours, you might enjoy this one.
Coming back to review Ghost Fire. The description on Etsy is “A hauntingly beautiful blend of white ambers flickers like ethereal fire. The exquisitely unworldly ones draw close to revel in its strange and luminous sweetness.” I chose this one because I like Amber. This perfume oil also seems to be the most popular of the ones I ordered. I can definitely smell the white amber, and something sugary. Maybe some vanilla? To be honest, I did not read the description very well before ordering and didn’t catch that it was sweet. 100% my bad. It reminds me of Nemat’s Vanilla Musk. I’m not personally a fan of sweet scents, but I can still appreciate this one as a nice scent. It’s warm and gentle and clean. Reminds me of curling up in a sweater with a fantasy novel. I’ll probably give it to my sister because it suits her style more, or maybe layer it with a bit of Farkas. If someone were selecting a gift for a younger person, Ghost Fire would probably be a good bet. That’s not to say that this would be juvenile on an adult, but it would be appropriate for a young person, too.
Back to review The Raven. Alkemia’s description: “For those who are nyctophiliacs (lovers of the night), a midnight elixir of shadows and mystery blended at the dark of the moon – ebony heartwood, black amber, piper nigrum, blackseed (habbatul barakah), black Bengal cardamon, black ink, nigella (black coriander), black iris, violet leaves, and leather.”
This is my favorite of the perfume oils I got, and I regret requesting only a sample. Unlike Farkas, the leather scent (while noticeable) is a bit better balanced with the other notes. There is definitely a spiciness from the pepper, a bit of sweetness, and a synthetic quality that I think is maybe the ink? It kind of reminds me of Black Orchid in the darkly sweet oozing quality, but while Black Orchid never truly grew on me, this one really did.
Word of warning: this is *strong*, the strongest of any of the oils I ordered. I put a tiny dab on my cleavage and a tiny dab on my wrists, and about an hour into my workday as it began to radiate I became very worried that I was beginning to smell like I’d doused myself. I went to the bathroom and was wiping a wet paper towel on the spots I’d dabbed. It didn’t even smell that strong when I left the house…this one grew. I think that’s a testament to the quality of these oils.
Editing my review because I’ve now ordered from Alkemia a few more times and tried a number of samples, and I want to mention some other standouts. Again, please forgive my sub-par perfume descriptions.
Incantation Vanille is absolutely gorgeous, the leather/vanilla/tonka is the perfect combo of soft and dirty.
Ambre Terrae II is an earthy amber/patchouli blend that I did not originally think I liked, but really grew on me. The depth and richness is almost chocolatey.
Hellcat is weird, fascinating, and addictive, a gothic masterpiece. It’s very dark with this odd cola-like note pulling it all together. The longevity is quite impressive.
I don’t usually like sweet or sugary scents, but since Calliope seems to be Alkemia’s most popular fragrance and I’ve liked so many of their others, I gave it a try. It’s a gorgeous, sophisticated cotton candy and I wound up wearing that sample a lot this summer. Calliope actually made me change the way I view sugary fragrances – clearly I do like them when they’re done well!
Douceur De Vivre has a sweetness that’s reminiscent of Calliope, but where Calliope punches it up with more citrus and floral, Douceur De Vivre is more subdued. I’ve come to think of it as Calliope’s big sister.
Kamarasa I’ll mention, quite uselessly because I don’t even know how to describe it except to say it’s beautiful. If you like the idea of a coconut fragrance but hate most coconut notes, definitely give Kamarasa a shot.

First up, I have to say if you’re new to perfume oils you HAVE TO REST THEM. They aren’t like EDP’s where the alcohol emulsifies and stabilises the ingredients. Alkemia and other oils really need to be left alone for at least 72 hours but usually more like a week to settle after travel. They also often need a shake before use to distribute the ingredients.
If you try the oils straight out of the post, you will often be disappointed. One of my favourite Alkemia oils, Vanille Patchouli, smells like nothing straight out of the mail. Seriously, it is pretty much odourless. After 3 days it’s this earthy, dry gorgeous patch melded with a creamy, lush, non foodie vanilla.
Alkemia’s scents are definitely more elegant and sophisticated than BPAL. When BPAL gets it right, it’s amazing, but unfortunately 90%of their stuff is awful on me. Alkemia has a much smaller catalogue, but it seems much more thoughtfully curated and put together. I also love that they don’t have the feeding frenzy of limited editions that other horses have. Bottles stay up till they sell out. I bought a bottle from the Halloween line in February. I’m not interested in fighting super fans for LE or getting into bidding wars on eBay. I think that’s ridiculous. Alkemia seems to attract an older and less rabid fanbase who just want gorgeous, sophisticated perfumes that are different from the mainstream offerings, but that aren’t full of weird, challenging notes that seem to have been thrown together with little thought in order to have an enormous catalogue of LE’s.

I guess you could call me a bit of a fumehead. Ive done mainstream fragrances big time and moved on to much better fragrances that are great quality and moderately priced. Ive tried quite a few different perfume oil houses and Alkemia stills comes out as the best. BPAL were ok but their fragrances didnt have the sophistication or refinement I found in Alkemia fragrances plus they are more pricey and their website is really hardwork to navigate. Alkemia customer service is great and the turn around time is phenomenal. I find perfume oils easy to carry in my purse plus the longevity is great. If you love white florals then do try Midnight Garden. Its the most natural smelling white floral I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy! Sorry mainstream fragrances I’m never going back to second rate.

I really love niche/artisan perfumes. I bought some Alkemia for my daughter and she really likes all of them but one. No leaks for me, all was cool. Used to buy BPAL, but I find they are getting pricey and some of the scents are just too out there for me. I also bought some other ones of Etsy too from Siberie Perfumes and LVNEA.

I adore this etsy shop! I was wary of trying another perfume oil brand…for some reason BPAL scents always end up smelling like either pencil shavings, baby powder, or a craft store on me. Some of them even cause migraines and nausea. Anyway, I came across Alkemia while wandering Etsy and decided to give them a try. I’ve tried dozens of their scents and I can say they’re of very high quality, each is long lasting and truly unique. Fast shipping, incredible value. It’s autumn now, and these days I am into warm, amber patchouli type scents. Les Mysteres, L’Encens à la Vanille, Burning Roses, Hippie Gypsy, and Salome are all just wonderfully rich, warm, spicy, and sexy. Addictively deep, dark, powerfully feminine scents. I like to layer them all with each other, and with Smoke & Mirrors or a vanilla scent to bring out different notes. In particular, Les Mysteres, Burning Roses, and Salome each smell like they should be crazy-expensive. Happy to go back for more!

I got 10, adore 3 of them & need a full bottle asap. I like another 2, the others are nice, well blended just not my taste. Can we talk about the TAT? I ordered on a friday, she shipped on Saturday, i had the mail on Friday. the sample pack of 5 is priced at a very reasonable 7.55 euros. I ordered a sample pack of 10, she generously added one. I’m already planning my next purchase, i’m getting 3 full bottles of antares- zingy, effervescent aquatic floral, trick or treat: sweet, deep, mandarin & licorice blend, & aphrodesia- sexy, vanilla, spice & incense. I’m also going to get more samples. Love this shop, highly recommend!

Excellent, excellent store and product! Because I refuse to patronize cookie cutter scents I specifically seek to find indie vendors and perfume oils. Needless to say, I am a Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab addict and, now that I’ve discovered Alkemia, you can count me as an addict of this brand as well. A couple of advantages that this brand has it that you get the same amount of oil for less money. I have experienced great wearing time with these oils and there are several that have become HG for me. Order shipping is fast and customer service is great. I don’t have one negative thing to say about Alkemia. I’m glad I discovered them.
