This is so sheer I can barely smell it, but seems okay. I sure don’t smell the true rose oils listed in the notes, though. It comes across on me more like a big production offering, which is less appealing. Still, it’s okay, if not really for me.

I actually haven’t tried this yet but wanted to share that I just bling purchased a 1.7 ounce bottle tonight. I cannot wait for it to get here! I bought it based on the reviews I read here. I have been desperately seeking something similar to Stella (original, pre-2003) and I imagine I may have found what I am looking for in this frag! On the other site, there are also many many comparisons to Stella. I am assuming it has been discontinued due to the extremely high price. On ebay the 1.7 was going for about 300. That is outrageous. I was able to find the 1.7 oz on fragrancesandcosmetics.com for around 100 cheaper. Not only that but the fragrancesandcosmetics.com site offers easypay. Instead of paying this huge sum right now, I pay 52 every two weeks for 4 weeks. MUCH better for me to have it spread out.
Anyway, I will update when I receive, but I cannot imagine not loving this!

To be fair, I’m working from a sample, and I would only get deeply discounted on Ebay. That said, this is gorgeous. It is, as previous reviewer states, a real rose, fresh fresh fresh. I can find citrus feel at the top, and there is an overall air of aquatic. But this is a rose, straightforwardly. It isn’t tea rose, as in Perfumers Workshop Tea Rose (PWT). Since there are many roses, with many variations of scent, I’d call this the rich version of standard yard rose. There’s a little of the feel of petals and green that you get with the tea roses, but overall this is a classic rose, one of the vintage ones. Rose de Grasse isn’t jammy rose – without being “sour,” exactly, it’s more tart than that, more fresh and elegant.
Sillage isn’t knock you down, as is with PWT. You could wear normal sprays this, enter an elevator, and everyone getting out wouldn’t reek of rose. But it is very present, and it persists. I wouldn’t give this to anyone but a rose afficianado because this isn’t a disguised rose. I can only judge packaging from the pictures, and they look lovely. Rose de Grasse is very high on the list for possible full bottle of a rose something currently being jonesed.

Oh man, this is a thing of beauty. My husband and I are closing on a house in a few days, and I bought this anyway. That should tell you that Rose de Grasse is something special. I live in Austin, and our state capitol building has one of the most beautiful, fragrant rose gardens I’ve ever seen. I work close to the building, so I frequently take walks on the capitol grounds on my lunch breaks. It seems like these roses are in bloom all year round, and the smell drives me nuts in the most wonderful way.
Ever since picking out our house, I’ve gone rose crazy, researching heirloom Texas-hardy varieties I want to buy for our house. I’m dreaming of just taking over the entire front yard with rose bushes, and doing away with mowing. I couldn’t get the smell of roses out of my head, so after 8 billion fragrance board searches, I thought I’d give Rose de Grasse a try. I really wanted something fresh and “real”, since I already have a stunning, spicy Middle Eastern rose in Armani Privé’s Rose d’Arabie (also astronomically expensive, but totally worth it).
I tried Rose de Grasse at Nordie’s, and fell in love. I thought I might be able to dupe it for cheaper, but nothing really compared. Stella came the closest, but it was still too thin, sour, and musky. Everything I hoped would come close smelled so cheap it was depressing. As with most expensive things I get a taste for, nothing else would do. Happily, I came into a small holiday windfall in the form of a $200 Visa gift card from my work. That settled it!
It’s a shockingly tiny bottle for the price, but everyone seems to assert that it’s an extrait, or parfum concentration. It’s rather fleeting for parfum, but perhaps that’s because my other extraits are more heavy hitters (Samsara, L’Heure Bleue, Bois des Îles). However, I must say that it lasts quite long for a rose fragrance, which in soliflore form are usually pretty ephemeral. At any rate, 5 out of 5 lippies! I’d buy again.
