A delicious dry green violet that that starts off with a smoky blast of oakmoss and softens to a smooth combination of soap and dry mossy florals.
Don’t be put off by the first 5 minutes. I can remember the first time I tried this on. I nearly choked on the opening fumes which smelt like really strong oolong tea, very smoky and slightly acrid. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the real fragrance.
Sillage – Soft to moderate
Longevity – Moderate at 4-5 hours
I wear this by itself on the weekend with jeans for shopping and casual catch ups with friends. Occasionally I layer it with Laurence Dumont Vanille Violette which makes it more feminine and oddly enough also increases longevity – odd because worn by itself, Vanille Violette has very poor longevity on me. Mostly, I wear it by itself. This is definitely a unisex fragrance, and one that can be easily worn alone. I just like to layer for fun. If a man wanted to take the edge off the sweetness, it would simply be a matter of layering it with a bit of Vetiver oil or eau de toilette.
Having said all of this, my partner doesn’t really like it. It smells pretty ordinary on him, and he prefers something a little less unisex on me. He acknowledges that it’s a good fragrance, but neither violet, oakmoss or vetiver are notes he loves, and they’re all here in spades.

The smell of a handsome man. That’s all. Period.

Geoffrey Beene GREY FLANNEL (nose: André Fromentin, 1975). Green/Floral/Mossy.
There is a YouTube video of teenaged boys applying this scent.. then exaggeratedly gagging and guffawing at how “bad” it smells. This is most unfortunate, as GREY FLANNEL is one of the most daring, unique mainstream men’s scents there is… dating from that great decade of perfumery, the 1970’s, when department-store tier fragrances still took bold risks to create novel, impressive numbers unlike anybody else’s. One of the few true men’s florals out there, more akin now to a modern Pierre Guillaume niche oddity than a department store staple, GREY FLANNEL sails in on notes of transparent bergamot, lime, spacious grassy lawns, neroli, carnation, rose, cold March jonquils, and its distinctive signature note: violets… quite rare for any modern “men’s” scent. Dry, not candied, the violets lend a crepuscular, ultra-suave, milled-soap “old English” feeling to this scent. Undergirding the green floralcy is a base of dense oakmoss; one applies GREY FLANNEL with a light hand, as that mossy base is opaque, glowering and very tenacious indeed. Today, GREY FLANNEL is mostly found for a song in drugstores and Wal-Marts, having lost its Disco-era high chic… again, unfortunate; its green-gray, wine-shaped flacon no longer comes in its chic flannel drawstring sack, nor does the scent appear anymore in its myriad of accessories, like soaps, deodorants, powders, etc. But GREY FLANNEL hasn’t been “freshened” over the years, happily — it’s still the purply/dense exercise in rich botanicals it always was. Highly recommended.

I love this cologne, drives me wild! My husband used to wear this when we were dating..loved it so much. Smells so good. It’s my all time favorite mens cologne. These days I have turned him on to more natural cologne’s for day to day..though he still wears this here and there for me, because I love it.

My husband requested I get this for him several Christmas’s ago. I did and OMG did I regret it! It literally smells like sharp cat pee. It’s DISGUSTING.

This has got to be the nicest cleanest mens cologne ever made..its floral but not sweet floral..its fresh clean love it!..it reminds me of expensive shaving soap …if hubby dosent wear this fussy thing that he is…then I’m claiming it for myself as it also reminds me of expensive Estee Lauder perfumes…
Edit..this delicous fragrance lasted 10 hours on my skin & that was just a teeny dab…If Prada or Estee Lauder brought this out as a womans perfume it would be a worldwide No.1 seller…its abs gorgeous ….I have a collection of fragrances going back well over 20 years..from Amouge to Avon…this is one of the most well balanced..beautiful fragrances I have smelt…I going to stock pile it by the bucket full …..divine

Just the most gorgeous green scent. A huge blast of galbanum drying down into a violet leaf floral that is never too sweet or sickly. Great staying power and tremendous sillage. I love this and have stockpilled huge bottles. It is amazingly cheap online and if you like green scents this is one of hte best.

On me, this smells like a sappy tree branch plus a teeny bit of tonka bean. On my husband, it sweetens considerably.

Years ago I got this for my husband and it wasn’t to his taste…it was before I was exploring the world of perfume and just returned it without trying it myself…after trying it later in a department store, fell in love with its beautiful, rooty violet-leaf aspect and cuddly drydown. Easily obtained for $8 at Winners, it is comforting, cleanly sweet (not sugary) and very elegant – love it!

Nicely citrus scent with greens and non-feminine florals. It blends down to the basenotes with a musky feeling, very smooth. Kenneth Cole for men is very similar to this. Fresh without being quite aquatic, musky warm undertones that remind of warm skin, but clean at the same time. I like this one a lot, and might even let my husband try it out.
