The pencil end tip breaks when you use it. The liquid eyeliner side makes nice thick lines that bleed 70-80% of the time I use it. I do not mean it bleeds into wrinkles. It just has a mind of its own and after application liquid wanders where it was never wanted while you scramble to blot it up. Tarte Cosmetics makes a lot of great products, this is just not one of them.

This is one of the best eyeliners I have ever used. It is long wearing and does not smudge at all! It has a perfect tip to create a cat eye or just a thin line for a natural look. It does not ever run, I can even leave it on while I’m at the gym and it doesn’t wear at all. One of the best eyeliners on the market would highly recommend

I want this dead. And whoever made it needs to suffer–like I just did trying not to look Satanic for my afternoon walk.
They should have just made two different eyeliners, because the pencil liner (retractable) is pretty dang decent: 4.5
+ Staying power: A Decent on the waterline even. Easily gets through a work day and most of an evening
+ Allergen-friendly: A One of the best–maybe even top five.
+ Ease of use: B+ Very soft, stays fixable for a while, easy to control. Too long to dry for my personal taste.
+ Pigment: B+ This varies by taste, but this is a VERY flattering black. Not harsh at all, but the pigment is definitely above average still.
Sigh… And the other half… Ugh! This isn’t a liquid liner, it’s a watery liner. Even makeup experts will not be able to control where this stuff bleeds. If you are over 18 or have ANY line around your eyes, it is going in there like a creek. And it’s hard to get out. Then you spend your afternoon trying to get creative with your look to try to fix it: Egyptian? Oops! Flapper? Uh-oh! Teenage Punk Girl with “F-you” Tattooed on her Forehead? Nope. Too much look even for her! Goth Princess Drag Queen at an Indian Wedding? Bingo!
The tip is just too flimsy, IMO–they wanted it thin, but it flies around all over the place. Impossible!

This was sort of an accidental purchase, as I was looking for a new pencil liner and did not realize that this has both a pencil and liquid liner! So while I initially thought $24 was expensive, it is actually affordable when you consider that you are getting two liners in one package. The liquid liner end has a stiff felt tip, which is helpful for application. Unfortunately the tip is also thick and the liquid bleeds excessively, which makes it difficult to create sharp lines. The pencil end is a twist-up, automatic sharpening liner. The pencil glides well and is surprisingly waterproof to the point that I had difficulty removing it even with a oil cleansing remover. The pencil end is also small, which is good for details and finer lines. However, the tip breaks easily. A plus for both ends of the liner is that they are both very pigmented and long lasting. Both liquid and pencil survived sleep, although the pencil left residue under the eyes. While it is a decent and affordable double liner, the bleeding factor of the liquid and breakable pencil tip are the main reasons why I would not repurchase it.

At $24 this is priced competitively with eyeliners from Clinique, Stila, and Kat Von D. However, this seems to be a better value because it’s double-ended. You’re getting a swivel-up gel pencil liner on one side and a felt-tip pen liquid liner on the other. This is great for me because I generally use a pencil to line my bottom lashline and a liquid to line the top. I like the dual-sided product because it’s a nice way to streamline my makeup bag; I only need one item to line my eyes instead of two.
The fully retractable pencil side holds up very well during the day. It isn’t prone to fading or smudging. I tested it on one eye and wore Stila Smudge Stick in Damsel on the other, and Tarteist lasted longer. The pencil is also thin which makes getting a precise line simple. I was able to use Tarteist’s gel pencil side in the waterline, and it didn’t migrate onto my contact lenses the way the Trish McEvoy gel pencil did. It is rare for me to find a good waterline pencil so this side of Tarteist Double Take is excellent.
The liquid side is good but didn’t impress me quite as much. It’s easy to apply and the ink holds up pretty well. If I rub my eye, the line can break down where I’ve rubbed it, and it’s not completely waterproof on the inner corners where I have a tendency to tear up, but at least it doesn’t flake, crumble or smear like Kat Von D’s tattoo liner did. The only negative I can think of on Tarteist’s liquid side is that the line on my upper lid can fade from its initial true black to a dragonfly black (a blue-green shiny black) by the end of the day. I had that issue with Lorac’s Front of the Line Pro eyeliner pen, too – it always faded to a bluish black. This problem can be remedied once the liquid is fully dry by going over the line with Tarteist’s pencil side. But with Stila’s jet black Stay All Day pen, or with my uber-waterproof MAC Liquidlast, I get a more straightforward deep black that doesn’t fade or shift.
I like the sleek black-and-gold housing. Tarte also made sure the caps were slightly different which I find helpful. With two distinct ends it’s easier to keep track of which side is which. The retractable pencil side has a slightly tapered, more curvy cap and the liquid side has a standard cap that looks just like the cap of Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner. Like Stila’s, it also clicks shut so you can tell when it’s securely closed.

Sidebar: At one point I studied German, so whenever I see “Tarteist” written, I always want to pronounce it the German way with a long “i” as in “stein” or “klein” but Tarte intended for the name “Tarteist” to rhyme with “artist” rather than the way I hear it in my head: “tar TYST.” Oh, well.
Tarteist Double Take Eyeliner is great for the purse or overnight bag. It’s not waterproof like MAC Liquidlast or Milani Infinite Liquid Liner, but it’s more water-resistant than most of the other pen liners at Sephora.
I’d repurchase, mainly for the swivel-up pencil side.
