Eyeliner background: don’t have much luck with ’em, unless they’re liquid. But sometimes I just don’t want a black winged eye, you know? I love the espresso smoky sexy eye thing, looks so warm and cozy, especially with dark eyes (which I have, conveniently) but most brown liners pull too warm or light and have annoying formulas. A lot of the newer pencil liners are problematic for me. If they don’t smudge or fade they irritate my eyes like crazy, and most seem to want to live ON my contacts. This old-school formula doesn’t.
Black Coffee is an ashy deep brown without any warm tones. It sharpens to a nice, solid point that makes creating a precise line very easy. I can slide it along the lashline and it looks like I tightlined. It doesn’t have the gel feel like new pencil formulations, but it applies smoothly and evenly and it does last. Maybe not like iron (liquid or gel), but it lasts. Setting with a similar colored shadow helps. There is time to smudge or smoke it out before it sets.
I use this to contour my eyes too. The lack of warmth in the color makes it perfect for this. First I define like normal, using a little dome shaped brush to soften the line if necessary. Then I hit the outer v, using light short strokes and aim to connect the line up to where I had defined my socket with a taupe-colored shadow earlier in the process. Then I use the same brush to blend it out. THEN I go back and sharpen/darken the line at the lashes. It doesn’t take a long time and the final look reminds me of either medieval Spanish princesses or like, a late 80s witch. Both things that I am into…
Sidenote: this eyeliner has been around for a long time, and I have memories of my mother using it, looking all fancy. It has an classic, elegant vibe that is reflected during use as well as the look it provides. Drink wine when you apply it. Red.

Within an hour this smudges on me giving tired looking eyes. Granted my eyes are watery but the UD or stila eyeliner just gets lighter, not melt.

The colour is the colour of black coffee, very nice smoky blackish brown. I always set it with powder and don’t really experience smudging or much fading, however I don’t wear it on the waterlines so I can’t say how well it will fare there. It goes on the eyelids smoothly without being too soft or creamy. Love it!

This is my everyday HG eyeliner! It is the first eyeliner I have ever used and I’m probably going to stick with it forever. The colour is a gorgeous dark brown. Yet, it’s a bit darker than most dark browns but definitely isn’t a black. I just can’t find this perfect colour anywhere else! I’m scared of using black eyeliner because I find that it makes me look too harsh. A normal brown liner seems to be a bit too gentle. Lancome’s “black coffee” is like a dream come true.
I not only use this for my eyes, but also to draw in my brows and as a contour for my nose. It is a multi-purpose item for me! Seriously a holy grail <3
Pros:
- The colour (LOVE IT!!!!!)
- Extremely easy to wash off (just use water; even cold water can get it off)
- Smudge-able and very suitable to use for a smoky eye look
Cons:
- This DOES smudge very easily if you use it on your waterline or use it to tightline (you will look like a panda within an hour!); I only recommend using this for normal eyelining
- Not super long-lasting and will fade throughout the day
TIP (A lot of you might already know this, but just in case): Before you sharpen this eyeliner (or any eyeliner), put it in the freezer for a minute or two. This way, you will be able to sharpen it without having it break off. It'll save you product and you will be able to get the perfect results! 🙂

While I love the color of this eyeliner I don’t love how it transfers on my hooded eyes! I wore it for the first time out to lunch and before I even got to the restaurant it had migrated to my crease area. I had even set it with brown eyeshadow since I have fairly oily eyelids-didn’t help at all. Back it goes…

I’ve been wearing Lancome’s “Black Coffee” eyeliner for 25 years (since I was a teen in the 80’s!). It is THE PERFECT combination of dark brown and black ….. Not too black as to be harsh …. Yet darker than all other dark brown eyeliners on the market. It is literally the exact shade of straight black coffee. Dark and sultry, yet still soft and warm. Love it and will always wear it!! It is a true classic. 🙂

The only eyeliner ill ever use… Before this purchase, I used the Chanel and mufe eyeliners (which were great) but they did not go on as smooth as the Lancôme ones do. They last all day!!! I use black coffee to tight line and I also line my lids with it. It is so natural and beautiful. I also bought one of these for my 12 (going on 13) year old daughter and she loves it too. She wears it on her lid along with a white, cream colored shadow and it looks very elegant.
