Oh, what to do, what to do… I’m so in-between with this palette, because overall, it’s not a bad palette by any means, but there are areas in which it fails miserably. I suppose I’ll get the negatives out of the way.
– The packaging. Is. Horrible. It’s so flimsy, cheap, and unattractive. I know it’s an inexpensive palette, but I still feel like I need to handle this thing extremely carefully. I wouldn’t dare travel with it.
– The shimmers are absolute rubbish. You cannot use a wet brush or your finger on them, or it’ll turn them into hard pan, and using a dry brush yields no payoff. They are unpigmented, and while they feel silky to the touch, they are almost unusable. Thankfully, they don’t make up a large percentage of the palette.
– Some may see this as a negative while others may see it as a positive, but Revolution is sort of infamous for being a knock-off brand. On one hand, I don’t mind because it makes the looks of higher-end products more available to those who don’t have the money to splash out on premium makeup. But on the other hand, it’s also disrespectful to the artists who created the higher-end products that MUR is ripping off. It’s a good thing the quality isn’t even near as good as their more expensive counterparts, or they’d be putting the good brands out of business. In this particular case, this palette is an obvious knock-off of the Anastasia Subculture palette, which was panned by beauty critics pretty universally. That’s actually why I picked this up instead of the Anastasia palette, because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a palette that would give me as many issues as I saw Youtubers and Instagrammers suffering with the ABH one. However, given the choice between some other MUR palettes and the premium palettes they’re copycatting, I’d rather spend the money on superior quality and original development.
Now onto the positives:
+ The mattes perform well. They’re not the most pigmented mattes in the world, and they kick up a lot of dust, but it’s not difficult to create an interesting look with the mattes in this palette. The yellow, orange, and khaki green shades really do perform well.
+ Obviously, the price at $7 is pretty dang good. If you really cannot afford to support the more expensive brands that created the original palettes, then it’s worth it to try these for their low price.
+ Vegan and cruelty-free. Many of the brands that MUR rips off are also cruelty-free and largely vegan, but finding decent vegan makeup at a low price point can be difficult. So kudos to them for that.
Overall, I don’t really dislike this product at all (except for the awful shimmer shades), but I am not in love with it. I don’t think I’ll be purchasing any other palettes from this brand, and I won’t likely repurchase this one if I ever manage to run out of it.
