Gah, I love this. This is one buy I do NOT regret. If you’re interested in trying out Surratt, this palette is a great place to start. As far as I know, it’s only available on Net-a-porter which obviously limits accessibility and, I imagine, is why there are hardly any reviews of it online. But if you don’t have a Surratt counter near you, or just feel plain overwhelmed by the range of choices (like me), the In the Shadows Palette is a fantastic choice.
The quality of these shadows is amazing. They are buttery, velvety and super pigmented and they are a DREAM to blend, even for a relatively inept person such as myself. The shades are really well chosen and you could put together dozens of looks with them, from daytime/office appropriate to a night out look.
Personally, I gravitate towards the two top neutral shades at the top – Soie which is a very understated luminous cream with the subtlest hint of sheen, and Poudre which is a pinky beige that is a great laydown colour for the whole lid. Probably my favourite shade though is Haute Chocolate. I think the description of ‘rich glowing brown’ is spot on – it lends a glowy depth to my eyes without looking too ”makeup’ ish. It’s a very wearable colour, perfect for smudging into the outer v of my eyes and blending along the crease. Truffe, which is the other brown shade is a fair bit darker than Haute Chocolate and has a matte finish rather than satin. Some matte shadows are unpleasantly chalky but Surratt are in a class of their own. There is almost zero fall out and they practically blend themselves so you get a polished effect with very little effort.
The bottom two shades are Enchanteresse, which is described as a ‘shimmery slate grey’, and Noir Le Plus Noir, which is a matte black (really, really black). Despite the fact I’m not generally a fan of shimmery, metallic shades, I reach for Enchanteresse quite often. It isn’t frosty, the shimmer effect is very subtle and it balances out the palette by providing a cool shade. I use Noir Le Plus Noir as an eyeliner on days when I am going for a more natural look and want to skip pencil liner. I just dip my angled brush in and smudge along my lashline. Staying power is impressive. I used it to line my eyes without any primer and it still looked great six humid hours later. I imagine that if used wet, this would work amazing as an eyeliner, especially if you want a kohl like effect.
To sum up, the formulation of these eyeshadows is just in a class of its own and I’ve already splurged and put together my own customised palette with the other matte neutral shades that aren’t in this one (Ombré, Griége, Chamois, etc). Still find myself reaching for the In the Shadows Palette more often because it has the perfect balance of light and dark, cool and warm, and satin and matte shades to put together a complete look. (Not knocking the other shades I mentioned – I just have a tendency to gravitate towards extremely similar neutrals!)
As for price, having done the math, buying this palette actually saves you a bit of money. It costs $122 USD on Net-a-porter while the Surratt shadows retail individually at $20 a pop and the grande palette is $22. So the total value of the palette is actually $142, and you save $20. Packaging is gorgeous and you can reuse the palette afterwards by popping out the individual shadows through the holes underneath (a needle would do the trick). It has a big mirror and comes in its own velvet case.
Bottom line: highly, highly recommend this palette! I’ve started exploring the rest of the Surratt line and have really been blown away by the quality. A+!!
