I was so excited to try this palette. I wanted the Kristen Leann Kaleidoscope palette but it sold out before I could get it. This one was on sale for $24 and there are 15 pans. It seemed like a great deal because I really like all the shades, there aren’t any I couldn’t see myself using.
I was especially excited to try the shadow toppers, but man they are a disappointment. They cant really be accurately described as duo chrome but I do think that’s what UD was going for. I know they require a base to work, and I find that black works the best BUT after applying them to a black base they’re too similar to the other shades in the palette. I went for a look with Hot Box (dark green shimmer), Shifty (duochrome green/yellow) and Blackout. Hot Box and Blackout were both just fine, nicely pigmented and smooth like I expect from an UD shadow.
Shifty is pretty much identical to Hot Box over a dark base and all but invisible over a light one, so much that my husband couldn’t tell I was wearing it. I decided to try again and replace Shifty with Bleach, which is a yellow/orange, but it was worse. Bleach and Blur, the first and last shades on the top row, are the worst ones in the whole palette. No pigmentation whatsoever. They blend away into nothing.
This morning I decided to give the toppers another try over NYX pencil in Milk to bring a pop of subtle color into my look. I decided to use Shifty again because of all the shadow toppers it and Space (blue) seemed the most pigmented. I applied with my finger and really tried to pack the shadow on for better color payoff but as soon as I started blending it started disappearing until I just had patchy barely green shimmer. Nothing like the color that I originally got from the finger application, even after trying twice more (once with a brush and setting spray) to get more pigment on there.
The fallout was so bad that even though I tried to be careful I had to wash my face and reapply my foundation. Not worth the effort considering the final outcome wasn’t something I would normally be comfortable wearing. I had a hair appointment though so I went with it, self conscious the entire time. When I got home a few hours later I saw that it had worn away completely in my crease.
I have tried them all, most of the regular shadows are pigmented enough to be useful and I will use them up…but overall this is a fail that I don’t recommend to anyone simply based on those 5 worthless shadow toppers. Maybe they could be used as subtle highlighters?

The Urban Decay Distortion Eye Shadow Palette features several colors of Urban Decay’s wonderful shadow formula that is creamy, buildable, blendable, and pigmented. This palette is unique because it features five of what they call “shade transformers.” Having duo chromatic or shade transformers seems to be a trend right now. Smashbox has had a couple palettes featuring similar shade transformers. I found all traditional shades in this palette to be great- UD has one of the best shadow formulas, in my opinion. The shade transformers can slightly variate the base color- but not markedly. There is nothing wrong with these at all, but to me, there isn’t a dramatic shift in the shades. If you already own the Alchemist palette, the Smashbox Transformer Palette, the Ulta Holographic Palette, or any of the NYX DuoChrome Powders, you probably don’t need this unless you want to use the entire palette with the traditional shadows.
