I tried e.l.f. pressed powdered eyeshadows years ago and was very disappointed. The shadows were dry, patchy, and poorly pigmented. Reviews I’d read of e.l.f. pressed powdered eyeshadows released in the years after those first experiences did not inspire me to try them again.
Until now, and the introduction of the e.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadow mini-palettes.
Sold in eight colorways, these mini palettes contain four eyeshadows each; two mattes and two shimmer/glitter shades. I initially purchased the Pumpkin Pie palette, and was so impressed with the formula, subsequently ordered and received Berry Bad, Hot Jalapeño, and Carnival Candy.
Priced at $3.00 apiece, each palette measures 3 1/2-in L X 1 1/4-in W X 3/8-in H. Each pan within the palettes measures 7/8-in X 3/4-in.
Like most e.l.f. products, the plastic case packaging is nothing to get excited about. But I’d rather pay $3.00 for good quality eyeshadows in a cheap case than $20.00 for the same quality product in a fancy case. After all, I’m not wearing the case!
e.l.f. has really upped their pressed powder eyeshadow game with their formula for these eyeshadows; all of the shades in the palettes I’ve purchased thus far have been creamy, blendable, and well-pigmented when applied over an eyeshadow primer or base. Note I always use an eyeshadow primer or base, even with high-end brand pressed powder eyeshadows. In my experience, ALL eyeshadows apply more smoothly, more true to color, and with a longer wear time – when used in conjunction with a primer or base. I also use sponge-tipped applicators to apply large areas of color, and use brushes for blending and detail work. In my experience, sponge-tipped applicators pick up and transfer pressed powder eyeshadow to the lids with less fallout – even high-end shadows and brushes. (Eyeshadow swatches posted online are usually created by applying the shadows with either a sponge-tipped applicator or a fingertip, because shadows apply more opaquely than they would if a brush is used).
The color range of these palettes, which include both warm and cool toned neutrals, as well as shades of blue, green, rose, and burgundy/berry – means there’s something for everyone, regardless if your makeup style leans towards natural looks or the more creative.
My only criticism of this collection is there is no palette with what I consider the shades necessary to complete every look; a creamy matte white and a creamy shimmer white (to be used as under brow and inner corner highlights), a matte nude (as a blending shade compatible with most skintones), and a matte black. A palette containing these shades would be a great companion palette to every one of the other palettes and is one I think we all would buy, if offered.
There are a total of 32 shadows in this collection, and all eight palettes stacked together roughly equal the size of a pack of cigarettes. This makes the collection perfect for travel!
Give e.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadows a try. I think you’ll find them surprisingly good!
