Started buying these when they came in a pot. Like the squeeze tube better. I’m thinking it won’t dry out as fast. Yesterday I used the warm beige color. It looked pink-toned on my lids. I used a very light layer of my favorite lid primer—Milani. Then this. If you blend it out it’s really quite sheer. I dusted some of my Mac shadow, All that Glitters, over the top and it was gorgeous. The texture of my eyelids was very nicely smooth. Very good longevity.
Lately my makeup style has been changing. I always liked a bolder eye and nude lip. Now that I’m in my sixties, I’m starting to like a nude eye and lips with more color. I think it’s more flattering.
This shadow made a pretty look in no time. I’m sure there are a lot of other eyeshadow that would look amazing with this as a base. Definitely worth the spurge.

When you get a deluxe sample of a product and find yourself grabbing a pair of scissors to cut open its container so you can scrape out the very last bit of product from the tube, that’s a pretty good indication you like it well enough to buy it and will use it!
I redeemed my Sephora Rewards points for a deluxe sample of the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadow in the shade M-56/Matte Taupe, and quickly discovered it is the perfect crease color for me, and added it to my favorite “I’m gonna trick you people into thinking I look like this naturally when I’m actually wearing a s*** ton of eye makeup” look.
For this look, I first prep my lids with a light coat of M.A.C. Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly, starting at the base of my lashes and sheering out the color to above my crease, applied with the Sonia Kashuk Core Tools Concealer Brush #110. This evens out my skintone, cancels out any redness, and ensures shadows applied over it appear true to color.
Over that, I spread a thin coat of e.l.f. Beautifully Bare Smooth Matte Eyeshadow in Soft Beige, applied with the product’s doe-foot applicator and then blended out to slightly above my crease, using the same Sonia Kashuk concealer brush.
I then define my crease with Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadow in Matte Taupe, applying it with the Sonia Kashuk concealer brush, using just the very tip of the brush to place the shadow precisely in my crease. I then blend it out using the flat side of the brush, which still has a bit of residue from the e.l.f. shadow on it – this aids in sheering out the product nicely.
Lastly I finish the look with NYX Professional Makeup Slim Eye Pencil in Dark Brown applied right along my lashline, then slightly smudged out using – you guessed it! – the tip of the Sonia Kashuk concealer brush.
All of these products last all day with no smudging, fading, or touch-ups required. While I use the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadow in Matte Taupe solely as a crease color, the product line includes a total of 20 shades in three finishes; matte, satin, and shimmer. While 12 of those shades fall into the “neutrals” category, they also offer “mixing” shades – matte red, blue, and yellow – as well as matte black and white. Armed with those five colors and a bit of knowledge of color theory, you can mix any color you desire!
The Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadows are very pigmented, so only a tiny bit is needed to cover the entire lid. So, while the product may seem expensive for the size of the tube (.16 oz), unless you use it for body painting, one tube will last you a very long time.
Great product!

These are really great. They look the same at 9pm than when I put them on at 5am! No creasing, almost imperceptible fade.
I have and I-50, a champagne base shade nd M-56, a matte dark taupe.
I-50 is a perfect base shade for browns and taupes and works well with my pale yellow skin tone. It’s perfectly shimmery without glitter.
I do find it can be tricky to shade with M-56 and need the tiniest amount and a LOT of blending.
Update: I love this even more now. If I blend the crease shadow before the base shadow is dry, it works nicely. It truly looked perfect last night and I put it on at 5am! No fading at all, still pigmented and elegant looking. These are pricey, but I will be using them from now on. Makeup I can depend on is very rare! Of note, pair it with black Lancome Drama pencil and Stila’s dark brown Stay All Day liner. Immaculate!

The Aqua XL Color Paint Shadows are Make Up For Ever’s creation of a waterproof Eye shadow. While these aren’t fully waterproof, they definitely have tenacity and can withstand several hours of wear through sun and sweat. I love that they have a diverse range of colors and finishes for this product.
