I bought this to avoid aluminium and other toxins you find in big name commercial products. Whatever they do put in this deodorant literally makes me gag – I have to hold my breath, spray, spray then run out of the room, quickly closing the door, then breathe. Definitely couldn’t use this at the gym or near anyone who likes breathing or has a sensitive nose.
It did work once it was on, but I couldn’t shake my feeling that any product that creates such toxic fumes can’t be good.

– the price – introductory price £1 from Asda.
– a little goes a long way – unfortunately.
My quest for an effective, natural, pleasant smelling pit protector continues.

I was intrigued by this deodorant, mainly because of its claims to be ‘pure’ and free from allergens, alcohol and aluminium chlorohydrate. According to the Soft & Gentle website, the Really Pure version instead relies on an active ingredient known as Potassium Alum, a substance made from natural minerals, which inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria. It also acts as a pH adjuster, creating an environment where bacteria cannot grow. The deodorant is billed as being suitable for even the most sensitive skin types and contains Oat Oil, which helps to moisturise the skin.
Unfortunately I experienced problems with this from about day three of using it. I noticed my underarms started to feel irriated, especially when the temperature was warmer. This gradually got worse, with my underarms becoming red and sore, at which point I stopped using it.
In the short time I did use it I can’t say I noticed any difference from my usual deodorant, although I did notice this was quite strongly scented, which in my opinion would go against something designed to be for sensitive skin. I have no idea what ingredient was in this that affected my skin so much, but based on my experience with it I wouldn’t be tempted to try the other varieties in this range for fear they would have the same effect on me.
I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone with sensitive skin or anyone prone to underarm irritation, especially after shaving/waxing, as I can see it causing more problems than it solves. I’ve since gone back to my trusty Dove deodorant and will be steering clear of ‘natural’ deodorants for a while.
