Paul Mitchell Color Protect Conditioner is the conditioner I use typically after color services but is not a necessity, in my opinion, when all Paul Mitchell Conditioners are color safe and I end up using a more beneficial conditioner anyways. I gave this product 3 out of 5 lipsticks because it has nice packaging that works well and it is consistent with the image of the other products from this line which makes them easily identifiable. Another reason this product still maintains 3 out of 5 is because it smells great and helps protect from harmful UVA and UVB rays, as well as aids in keeping color from fading. As far as conditioners go, this one is not my favorite. I don’t feel like it helps with detangling after a color service or provides any moisture. 9 times out of 10, I use a different conditioner to partner with the Color Protect Post Color Shampoo (for professional use only) and I feel like I kind of wasted my money on this conditioner because it is so rarely used. Maybe during the summer months I will use it more frequently than I do right now. I recommend this conditioner for anyone who has color treated hair that spends a lot of time in the sun or tans in a sunbed regularly. UVA and UVB rays can cause premature fading of artificial color and cause unnecessary sun damage to locks whether they are colored or not. I recommend this for all hair types with the exception of hair that lacks serious moisture as this product doesn’t provide any moisturizing benefits. For use on Color Treated hair, However there are other products within the Paul Mitchell brand that offer UV protection for virgin or highlighted hair as well as color treated because, as with most Paul Mitchell products, these products are also color safe. This is not something I would not consider a staple because it is not a great conditioner other than offering UV and color fade protection, which is nice, but, like i said, there are other products that offer those same benefits as well as other very beneficial to the over all health or the hair and actually work the way they are supposed to. I feel like I should say don’t waste your money on this conditioner and look into Paul Mitchell Ultimate Color Repair Conditioner which can aid in anti-color fade, detangling, and hydrating locks paired with the Color Protect Locking Spray for UVA/UVB protection and anti-color fade. Possibly to venturing out to the Pureology product line and try their 21 essentials spray which offers 21 amazing benefits including anti-color fade technology, detangling, thermal protection, and UVA/UVB protection would help eliminate a few products and be more beneficial for hair health. This conditioner is not worth it. You have to add 2-3 more products in combination with it to get the desired end result when you can simply switch your conditioner and leave in spray and only use 2 products instead of have to pack on a leave-in conditioner, an anti-color fade spray, UVA/UVB protectant, and a thermal protectant which can lead to overpowering product usage and leave you with limp and lifeless locks.

Used this as my conditioner for years because I was misinformed and cheap. Basically, it conditions a little bit but you have to use a ton of it. It didn’t really help my frizzy hair get smooth or nice.

OMG. I received the shampoo/conditioner combo for Christmas and I’m pretty sure this is the worst shampoo I have ever tried and I have tried a LOT. It made my hair nice the first few times but i noticed that it would never quite rinse out of my hair. As I continued to use it, my hair felt flat and would get greasy faster than usual. My hair literally felt nicer when I used drugstore hair products.

Meh. Found at TJ Max, 34 ounces for $12. Used with Big Sexy Hair’s Sulphate Free Volumizing Shampoo. Have colored, thin and straight hair. Very flowery sunflower fragrance. First use was great, made my hair like silk! After that, not much to rave about. I had bright Titian red hair at the time, no real color retention effect. Moderately moisturizing. Definitely not worth the salon price tag of $25. The bottle is very industrial and medical looking, brief instructions and discriptions. All around boring. Won’t be seeking this out again.

Edit: Used it as a cleansing conditioner tonight rather than a traditional conditioner following shampooing. Even sans shampoo, my hair was left bone dry. Paul Mitchell Color Protect Conditioner literally added 0 moisture to it…yikes. I’m willing to bet that’s due to the low silicone content and high amounts of protein. My hair LOVES silicone. This has been a lesson learned the hard way.

I chose this product the way I choose most products these days – based off ingredients. The ingredient list does look very decent. There are extracts, proteins, oils, and other beneficial ingredients for hair. I included the ingredient list at the bottom of my review. However, the quality and performance of this conditioner is not up to par.
It’s very light. You’re not going to get much moisture or slip while using this. My damaged hair needs all the TLC it can get. Paul Mitchell Color Protect Conditioner is probably best suited for those of you with thin, fine hair. It’s not going to weigh your hair down. Infact it’s not going to do much of anything.
I won’t throw it out. Instead I’ll probably just use it as a cleansing conditioner for desperate times. This is *not* worth the pricetag. Obviously I won’t be repurchasing.
Here is the ingredient list by the way: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium 37, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, PPG 1 Trideceth 6, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Helianthus Annuus Extract (Sunflower), Bisamino PEG/PPG 41/3 Aminoethyl PG Propyl Dimethicone, Hedychium Coronarium Extract (White Ginger), PEG 12 Dimethicone, Cocodimonium Hydroloxypropyl Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Algae (Seaweed) Extract, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Roman Chamomile) Flower Extract, Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Extract (Henna), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Extract (Jojoba), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract (Rosemary), PEG 12, Dimethicone, Wheat Amino Acid, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein PG Propyl Silanetriol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Panthenol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate, Fragrance, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexylcinnamal, Linalool

Hands down the best conditioner I’ve ever used.
I have extremely thick, wavy, dyed 2x and then bleached over that, about bra-strap length hair. It is very dry and tends toward tangling.
I use this conditioner alone once every 4 days or so – without any shampoo, but I slather it on and let it sit before washing it out – and then follow with a fair bit of coconut oil and olive oil on top of that. I let it air dry over the course of the day, combing it straight about every half hour til it dries.
Altogether, this routine is like a miracle for my hair. And it’s mostly due to this conditioner, because I used the oils and air dried with every other conditioner too, and my hair never came out like this! It’s smooth, and soft, doesn’t tangle, and lays flat. This is all very difficult to get my obstinate hair to do!
I’ve found my holy grail of conditioners and this is it.

Uggh. Horrible. My hair became sticky, strawlike, waxen and tangly all at the same time. I have thick, wavy, color-treated, shoulder-length hair that usually behaves decently, but this stuff made it SUCH a pain. And yes, I know how to rinse all the conditioner and shampoo out (I used both products separately and together and they both had this effect, so it’s got to be the product formulation). Every time I brushed my hair, a weird white residue showed up on the boar bristles. It was disgusting.
I got the set with the conditioner and shampoo from Paul Mitchell (if I’d bought it at an unauthorized retailer, I would not be surprised it sucked so much, but I got it straight from the salon). Paul Mitchell does amazing hair color, but their hair color maintenance products have been disappointing.
I really really wanted to like it because they’re cruelty-free, but no dice.
If you have it, return it for Wen by Chaz Dean or Güd from Burt’s Bees: both have excellent shampoos for color-treated hair and they don’t conduct or endorse animal testing. And a quick fix to undo all the product buildup: vinegar rinse!

I only had a small bottle of this so it was hard to tell whether it protected my colour, but it worked nice as a regular conditioner/detangler.

I just bought this conditioner for the first time this weekend. I’ve been using the Color Protect shampoo for months and I love it, but I’d always used Nature’s Gate or Avalon Organics conditioners with varying results. But since Ulta was having a Buy 2 Get 1 sale on Paul Mitchell products, and since I needed a new styling wax, I decided to give the conditioner a shot. And I’m glad I did.
This conditioner is extremely lightweight, but still quite hydrating. I’m still in the process of growing out my natural color, so I still need a bit of extra moisture, but heavy conditioners tend to weigh my fine hair down. This provides the right amount of moisture without adding weight, and it’s easy to rinse out, so it doesn’t leave my hair looking greasy.
It’s about $2 USD more than its shampoo counterpart, which brings it to about $14 USD at Ulta. That’s really not bad. It’s more expensive than the organic brands I was using, but it outperforms them ten fold.
The packaging, like the shampoo, has the kind of cap that you press open, rather than having to flip the cap up and risk breaking a nail. I prefer these types of caps because they are easier to open, but also don’t leak when it’s time to turn the bottle upside-down to get the remainder of product out when it’s almost empty.
I will continue to use products from this PM range even after I’ve gone back to my natural hair color entirely. I feel it nourishes my hair the most, isn’t overly pricey, and BONUS – Paul Mitchell products are all cruelty-free!

I could barely get a brush through my hair. It left such a heavy residue that I had to rethink if I forgot to rinse it out. On the plus side, if marketed as a volumizing conditioner, it would probably get good reviews. However, as a conditioner in general, it is not so good. I should have read the other reviews before buying.
