I am convinced that those who hate this product are simply not using enough. Because it takes a lot of product to have any positive effect which makes this not a very good value. Regardless, I like it. A Lush sales associate gave me a small hunk of this about a third of an ounce and I honestly had low expectations given how much I’ve heard people gripe about this product. When I first used the product I grabbed the whole hunk (which feels similar in consistency to a lump of fatty, firm cheese left a room temperature) and tried to run my hands over it. It didn’t create a lather or build up on my hands so I felt like I was rubbing nothing on my hair. Then the darn thing slipped out of my hands and into my hot bath and by the time I retrieved it it was more of a pomade consistency. I then rubbed THIS into my hair – the entire hunk of it which was probably the size of a tablespoon of butter (sounds excessive but then again I have long hair) – starting at the roots and then combing it down to the ends. It didn’t lather so I expected my hair to look greasy. I left it in for a few minutes and was shocked that it rinsed kinda clean. When my hair dried it smelled ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE and was thick and shiny, but not weighed down. It moisturized my hair in a way that no other conditioner has done. Most conditioners feel silky soft on but don’t really do much for the hair. This moisturized and repaired my hair in an unbelievable way and I can’t get over the scent! Only reason I am giving it four stars is because it is a pain in the rear to use and it’s kinda pricey considering how much you have to use.
Overall, to use this product you need to keep a few things in mind: 1) it won’t lather so stop trying to make it lather – soften it up in your hands with warm water until it becomes a soft pomade texture and work that in slowly 2) comb it through with your fingers or an in shower brush – the most important tip of all – otherwise it will just make a mass on top of your head and 3) let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
For the record, I do have fine hair but a lot of it that tends to be fairly straight when well conditioned and otherwise a little wavy.
Update: I bought my own and I love it! I find that it is good to use in between washes. I usually wash every other day and this would be good to use if I washed the night before. I used a little less than I did the first time. I tried to lather the bar up into my hands, ran that through my hair root to tip, and then rubbed more into the ends of my hair directly with the bar. I then combed it through. Left it in for ten minutes or so. It easily rinsed out. My hair dried quickly and feels thick, smells ridiculously amazing, and looks super shiny!

Lovely smell and good packaging but it performs quite terribly. Lackluster lather, hard to use and leaves some residue behind for some reason. Can’t recommend it and won’t buy again. It’s a shame because the smell is absolutely amazing but the rest is just too disappointing.

My hair is normal, and I’ve used other co-washes. This stuff left a horrible film in my hair: nothing like washing and blow drying your hair and IMMEDIATELY needing dry shampoo. Maybe very dry hair would love this, but I’m sticking with Hairstory New Wash deep for now.

Ugh. Too moisturizing for my thin, fine hair. Felt like it left a residue. Smells great but not for me.

Smells great (like a fruity dessert and sort of Jungle-esque), but that’s where its appeal ends. You pretty much have to soak this in water and make a paste out of it or it’ll just get clumps stuck in your hair. Even when I make a paste, though, my hair knots up so bad and feels like it has a heavy film on it whenever I use this. It’s not very moisturizing at all, but it does weigh my hair down and make it feel like straw. It’s full of ingredients that I love (cocoa butter, avocado, olive oil), but it just doesn’t work in practice.

Avocado’s big win for me is the scent. It smells like the most wonderful key lime pie and it lasts and lasts in your hair. I could catch whiffs of this all day and it made me so happy. If LUSH used this scent in other products I would buy all the things!
As a co-wash though…this was lacking. I tried it a few times on its own, and had to use so much of this quite expensive product to get it all over my head. It is quite difficult to mash up into a workable paste. I wasn’t bothered by the lack of lather, but it is difficult to spread and get all areas of your scalp and then work it to your ends. The finish once my hair was dried was ok, moisturized but with little slip, not very shiny. It was hard to de tangle when wet, and difficult to get a brush through while blow drying. I usually wash every 3 days, but with this I started noticing greasy patches by the next day that made me want to wash, and I can’t afford to use this every day!
I also tried it as a conditioner after shampooing, and had ok success with that. I had to use much less, since my oily roots were already looked after and I only had to focus on my ends. I cut my bar into “single use” portions once I figured out how much was needed per wash to cut down on waste, about 1/4″ by 1″ for my collarbone length, bleached and dry, straight hair. When this wasn’t being used to cleanse my scalp, I got a few more days between washes, but again, the finish was…just ok. I feel Jungle and most of the bottled conditioners give more shine and slip, and the only thing tying me to this product was the addictive scent.
And then- my back, neck, and hairline started breaking out. Pretty much everywhere my hair brushed up against, and places I don’t usually break out on. I tried to deny it, but once I stopped using this everything cleared up. I’ve been using the small remainder as shaving lotion. I really miss the scent in my hair, but the lacklustre performance combined with the breakouts and $16 for 100g just made it not worth it. I won’t repurchase this, but when Lush comes out with a lotion using this scent, I will buy it by the litre.
