I used to use this cleansing oil for many years. Since the Japanese were the first to create water soluble cleansing oils they have excelled in them for many years. This is one of the key cult classics on the market next to DHC and SK-II’s Treatment cleansing oil. I no longer buy this product as there are now more affordable options on the market that cleanse just as well if not better.
Since the main ingredient as the cleansing agent is Mineral Oil it seems fair to move onto more affordable brands like Neutrogena who have a Deep Clean Cleansing Oil which also uses mineral oil and is a fraction of the price, under $10 when on sale! Bargain.
Since cleansers leave little behind or should for that matter when they are rinsed off it seems silly to spend such a high amount on a cleanser. This is a make-up remover in Japanese eyes yet is fine for a morning cleanse upon rising. In Japan this is followed with a cleansing foam or gel.
This cleansing oil removes a complete full face of make-up extremely well and can also be used to remove heavy mineral sunscreens. The packaging is a little old and has now been updated as I can see. The pump is handy but they do need to create travel sizes.
I would not recommend or repurchase this cleansing oil as there are now more affordable and better formulated cleansing oils on the market. The cleansing oil/balm sector of the skin care market is ever evolving and expanding! Shiseido need to keep up with the times.

This product is replaced with the Perfect Cleansing Oil. This is basically the same product in new packaging.
Reviews are available here:
An excellent and exceptionally mild cleanser that will not strip the skin for precious moisture. It will leave the skin fully cleansed and supple with no feeling of tightness or any uncomfortable feel as other surfactant based cleanser can do.
It is supposed to be applied on dry skin, massaged in and then rinsed with warm water. It will be fully removed from the skin along with make-up and dirt without leaving an oily residue.
Some people have pointed out that it is “overpriced mineral oil that you can easily get from the pharmacy”.
I would recommend doing so and see what happens when you try to remove the oil from your skin with (warm) water. It will stick and will not be removed. Make-up will be smudged and “sticking to the skin”.
While the price is high is because you pay for the technology.
This is not pure oil. It contains surfactants that will aid the effective removal of the cleanser and make-up. This technology (or even invention) generates from Japan and has been used for several decades. (Just as an interesting fact, even US-based companies tried to launch some oil cleansers back in the 1990s. Unfortunately without greater success -ref. Origins Liquid Crystal from 1996.)
Why the Shiseido Cleansing Oil is the right choice for all skin types is because its hypoallergenic formula. It is also a misconception that Mineral Oil will clog pores and cause acne.
Mineral oil’s molecular weight is higher than what is necessary to penetrate the skin, which should be under 500 Dalton.
Mineral oil has no possibility to cause allergy hence it is inherently safe for people with allergy, dermatitis etc. The formula contains no preservative hence further minimizing possible allergic reactions.
The formula contains a light fragrance that is undetectable after rinsing and has no added colorant or preservative.
What I really like about this product is its lightness, even in warm, humid weather, it never feels oily and rinses completely without leaving any residue. Yet skin is completely clean and free of make-up residue and feels fresh.
Since the lipid barrier is not damaged after using it (unlike it can be the case with surfactant based cleansers), skin regains its health and looks luminous and healthy glowing.

I love cleansing oils to remove my eye make-up and although this Shiseido Ultimate Cleansing Oil works well for the face (and even body if you will), I would not recommend it for eye make-up removal.
On the face, however, it feels extremely smooth and never leaves skin feeling dry or “tight”. There is no greasy residue left either, so if your skin is on a drier side – this could be that nice final step in your cleansing routine. You can always read more about its effects and tips on how to use it properly on my blog ( ). All in all, I think it is a very nice product, but I would still stick with my Boscia oil, because that one removes mascara in 1, 2, 3 and it works for the face too. Hope this helped!

This is a decent cleansing oil – it gets the job done. It has a better slip than Origins, doesn’t contain menthol like Boscia, doesn’t leave behind a residue like Juice Beauty, and so on with other oil cleansers I have tried. It removes all my foundation, masacara, and lip gloss. It was about $25 which is the average price of oil cleansers from what I’ve seen. I am on the fence about buying again though, this is primarily mineral oil which costs a couple of dollars at the grocery store.

Eh, this stuff is alright. The main ingredient is mineral oil, an ingredient I’m not opposed to, but there are many superior cleansing oils out there that contain natural oils that are beneficial to skin. Other Asian cleansing oils Ive tried feel luxurious and nourishing, but this is basically baby oil. It doesn’t hurt my skin, but it doesn’t help it either. In other words I ain’t mad at it but I won’t repurchase. I much prefer the Illi cleansing oils by Amore Pacific, and already have some on order so that I can switch back once this is used up.

alright lets start with oil cleansers in general,
YES, buy one try them! they are amazing and effective…
i think this one may be better for a person thats unsure
about oil cleansers, maybe an oil newb so to speak,
because its light and still suds quite a bit however,,,,,
i myself am not into this particular one….basically at all.
sad to say and i feel i wasted my money.
great smell, ya it gets the job done but id much rather
spend my penny on DHC oil cleanser which i WORSHIP
its strong and effective takes away any and all evidence of
makeup, my hubby uses it even and it takes away every little
bit of dirt and grime….this on the other hand won’t even remove
my mascara!! AND cherry on top, the bottle leaks..maybe mines
defective idk but long story short, just buy dhc skip this its
a no go imo.

I’ve used a few bottles of this because it is effective at removing makeup and sunscreen and it doesn’t break out my clog prone skin, however it is drying. Because of the drying factor, I’ve since moved on to Fancl which I like much better.

I have been hearing about this for years. I finally jumped on the oil cleansing bandwagon, but tried other brands first. I have tried Nude (broke me out), DHC (didn’t like how greasy it was) and Josie Maran (absolutely loved it). This for me was an ok product. I think the Josie Maran is defintely better then this and the price point of that one is better. This had a rather odd smell, nothing irritating, but nothing nice either. The feeling of this was ok. It felt that it did not break me out and was not too oily. That being said I do not think it was as amazing as I had heard. I was expecting this to be better then the Josie Maran and it was not for me. The price point of this is a little high for it not to be an amazing product so for me this is a skip.

This product made me break out like crazy, which is odd, since my skin rarely breaks out these days.
After searching on the internet, its no surprise that it broke me out, since it primary ingredient i mineral oil.
Ingredients:
Mineral Oil, Cetyl Octanoate, PEG-10 Isostearate, Cyclomethicone, PEG-12 Diisostearate, Water, PEG-8 Diisostearate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Isostearic Acid, Alcohol Denat., Tocopherol, Fragrance
I brought it on sale for $10 NZD at the seasonal shisedo sales, and therefore am not actually sure how much it retails.
I know that mineral gets a really bad rep, and in my case, it really screws up my skin.
Perhaps if you had extremely dry, non sensitive skin this could be good? However considering its primary ingredient is mineral oil, which is dirt cheap to buy at any pharmacy, its probably not worth the splurge.

This is my favorite commercial cleansing oil. I prefer this over DHC and Nude (which both caused breakouts for me). I also prefer this over Shu Uemura A/O and A/I, and it is easier to get than Shu in the US. It’s great at dislodging debris from your skin (which feels like sand when you’re rubbing the oil on your face for a minute or two). It’s most similar to Shu’s High Performance cleansing oil and to the A/O (the green one) in its thin texture and ability to dislodge debris. l find it’s less drying than the Shu A/O though.
I don’t find the need to follow up with another cleanser when I use this oil. Another bonus, a little goes a long way. It is also good at removing make up. When I use this oil, I remove it with a damp muslin cloth or washcloth. A staple of mine when I want to deep clean. Highly recommend!
