This is one of the few product in LA MER, next to their old poorly formulated and now recently updated Refining Facial that I really don’t like.
For starters, this is pretty generic as far as most cleansing oils go. It’s just pretty standard and doesn’t seem to go above and beyond what less expensive cleansing oils do, that is to remove a full face of make-up and sunscreen and gently cleanse skin.
Once is instructed to shake the bottle to evenly disperse the tourmaline and algae fibers. Don’t see what that does exactly but it looks pretty enough on my vanity.
The smell is very odd, it smells like a uncleaned fish tank and is not at all pleasant, why it does not smell like the signature La Mer scent I will never know.
Instead of this cleansing oil I would much rather buy SK-II Cleansing Oil, almost half the price and lasts and performs much better.
Very disappointed I will not be repurchasing. For the money you are paying you want something of outstanding quality and will perform it’s function. This is just like any ordinary cleansing oil and performs not better than a cleanser from your local drugstore. Don’t waste your money and stick to the other more well formulated beautiful cleansers from La Mer such as the cleansing lotion, foam, gel and cleansing water.
Also one has to understand that cleansers can only really clean the skin, any miraculous ingredients they tout will be rinsed down the drain before they even get a chance to work their magic on skin. Especially in the brief moment that is cleansing. The pump dispense is very difficult to manoeuvre and sometimes spills. A very underwhelming product and I am not at all impressed, please work on the fragrance LA MER!

Another excellent oil cleanser. Although it will not match the simplicity and lightness of Shiseido Perfect Oil Cleanser.
The one from La Mer is opted to replace Mineral oil with other oils of synthetic and/or natural origin. This will make that the formula is not as light and refreshing and after rinsing it will leave (a bit) heavier after-feel on the skin along with the feeling of residue.
It is supposed to be applied on dry skin, massaged in and then rinsed off with warm water. It will be fully removed from the skin along with make-up and dirt without leaving an oily residue.
Oil Cleansers are exceptionally mild and will not strip the skin of precious moisture. It will leave the skin fully cleansed and supple with no feeling of tightness or any uncomfortable feel as other surfactant based cleansers can do.
It contains the Miracle Broth and loads of additional actives. But all this will be rinsed away and will have no chance to do anything for your skin. Besides these actives along with the Miracle Broth are water-soluble and are already encapsulated in the oils in the formula. They will never even will be contact with your skin (unless you leave it on more like an oil, This, however, is not advisable.)
Because it contains the Broth, the formula is turbid (not clear as oil cleansers are originally from the East). This is played on by the formulators at La Mer by adding the colour of blue/green and titanium dioxide along with the bentonite clay. The “sparkle” is from the shimmer of the added mica.
La Mer says that it contains seaborne actives and oils. Although some of the actives along with the algae based broth are of marine origin, I cannot see any of the oils used that they are anything else than from the origin of coconut (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride), olive (Squalane) and synthetic (Isononyl Isononanoate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate).
The surfactants used are of natural/synthetic origin too. (And nothing wrong with any of this!)
I find this cleanser heavier than the one from Shiseido (and lighter than Clinique Take the Day off Oil Cleanser), however I believe that it is a colossal waste to invest in it since you will literally wash it (and your money) down the drain.
It contains fragrance that is not unpleasant and can remind one of the sea. It lingers after removal, albeit very discretely.

This cleansing oil was very nice. It is one of the more expensive cleansers that I believe is worth the splurge. I was suffering from very unbalanced skin. I had dry patches and an oily t-zone. Oil cleansers are good for helping balance your skins sebum production and soothing irritation. This cleanser was easy to use, had a refreshing sent and does not leave any residue. After using my skin had a nice glow and felt very clean and soft. I especially liked using this cleanser on evenings I used retinol and acid based skincare.
The only con is that the pump was a little annoying to use.
I would like to state that I only review a product after I have finished the entire full size. If I was not able to finish the product due to irritation, I will say so in my review.

I need to update my feelings on this cleansing oil; I truly am a believer in it, I use it to remove my makeup and even before using the la Mer cleansing gel even without makeup on. The reason is I do not need to use any moisturizer after washing. I have skipped the toner as well. I felt the toner took away the benefit of using the cleansing oil before the cleansing gel. And it also saves me time and money as you know the cost of la Mer items. I have not had to use the concentrate now in over two weeks. So whatever the cleansing oil is doing for my skin it’s really beginning to be very noticeable. And I love the cleansing gel from la Mer it’s the perfect combination cleansing oil and cleansing gel, love what’s it’s doing for me very very happy. Texture is smooth pores are clean and seem to really hide now under makeup. And I think my eyelashes from the cleansing oil seem to be getting fuller and longer.

I was introduced to this product by my usual La Mer saleswoman in the middle of a long, harsh winter, when I pointed out that no amount of moisturizing could make up for the ravages of even the gentlest cleansing, especially in this weather. I was ready to give up. She suggested The Cleansing Oil, and I, in mid-winter despair, tried it. Thank goodness!
The oil is soothing, even to my dry, sensitive skin. A couple of pumps onto my hand (the pump maintains the cleanliness and integrity of the product within), and then rub between my palms and apply to my face. The Cleansing Oil does not have a perfume-y scent; it is earthy, which can be off-putting on first use. I got used to the scent quickly, especially when I realized that the ingredients (and lack of perfume) did not irritate my skin. Rub it into the skin to loosen make-up and dirt, then slowly add lukewarm water (the oil becomes white as you do this). Continue gently rubbing the oil onto the skin. Remove with more lukewarm water, and the oil goes away (along with all traces of dirt and make-up).
I then dab my face dry with a soft white towel. There are no traces of oil, dirt or make-up on that towel at the end of this. This Cleansing oil does what it says it does, while leaving skin feeling soft, not dry and stripped. I love a product that delivers on its promises.

This product was recommended to me by my good MUA friend msd67. She and I share cosmetic tips with each other frequently. La Mer has added a lot of new products to their line and this is a great one. It still contains the original Miracle Broth combined with other ingredients to detoxify, remove impurites and preserve skin’s moisture barrier while leaving it soft, moist and clean without any “greasy” residue (unlike some other oil cleansers I’ve tried). It comes in an easy to use pump bottle and is very fairly priced at $80.00 for a large size. It smells fresh and is soothing on my dry, sensitive skin. I am still more in love with Natura Bisse overall, but this is really, really nice and I definitely recommend it for those with my skin type.
