It’s so thick you can barely get it out of the tube!! It’s hard to get off and doesn’t get all my mascara off. It’s also pretty expensive and seems like extremely thick Vaseline. Will def not repurchase and almost returned it.

I have acne prone skin that is a bit oily (used to be VERY oily when I was younger) and gets dry sometimes due to running outside, swimming in pools, and gets a fair amount of exfoliating. I am also prone to clogged pores.
I wear a lot of makeup. I’m a total cakeface who usually wears full coverage, long lasting foundation, powder, and all the extra stuff I can. When I’m not caked in makeup, I’m usually dirty, sweaty, and drenched in hard-to-remove sunscreen, and I tend to be in both states on the same day. I need a cleanser that can do both and not cause further irritation.
I’ve tried almost everything, and was having trouble finding that effectively removed my makeup without harsh scrubbing and the sunscreen residue was causing breakouts, so when this was suggested, I imagined compounding the problem with a greasy balm, but that’s not what happened.
I’ve used oils for cleaning before, and they do break down everything, but leave so much oily residue that I have to use a really harsh cleanser afterwards that would have taken everything off in the first place, so there was no point in the first step, and there was never a time when this two-step process didn’t irritate my skin, no matter what oil I used. Over the years I’ve found that my skin likes rose a lot, so I thought I’d try this balm even though I was skeptical. and I didn’t like the idea of the muslin cloth for the “polish” aspect.
I agree with everyone else about it being irritating by the eyes (though it wasn’t too bad for me, and I do have sensitive eyes, usually) but even worse, it does not take off mascara at all, even the stuff that that basically rubs off with plain water. I usually use Almay eye makeup removing pads or Lancome bi-facil eye makeup remover, which I usually have to do no matter what cleanser I use because I pack on the eyeliner.
How I use it: I don’t exactly follow the method on the package. I use about the equivalent of two pumps of foundation and spread it over my face and massage it in for about two minutes minimum. This really dislodges anything on my skin and hydrates it without greasiness. Then I add a few drops of WARM water and emulsify the cleanser and when it becomes milky and I can feel the texture change (almost immediately), I tissue it off (not that weird cloth that seems like a great way to collect bacteria), taking any crud on my skin with it, then give it a final rinse. I was surprised to find it took absolutely every bit of makeup off. It does leave a residue, but for some reason, it doesn’t bother my skin. However, I’m acne prone, and in most cases I double cleanse, or use a toner.and then use whatever serums or treatments I use at night. My skin is so well prepped, anything I use after applies more easily and evenly, with no irritation from the cleansing. It’s a little extra work and doesn’t remove makeup as quickly as my DHC cleansing oil, so I tend to let it fall out of my rotation, but when I return to it, I’m always reminded of why I continue to repurchase.
As much as I like it as a makeup remover, I really love it as a morning cleanser even more. It gently removes any oil and treatments from the evening and leaves my skin moisturized and prepped for the day’s makeup and allows smooth and gently application without greasiness with just enough moisture for my skin on oilier days.
Over time, I think it’s been instrumental in improving my skin and, with some of the harsher ingredients I use as well as the physical wear and tear on my skin, this has done a lot to sooth and correct it, as well as adding the kind of hydration my skin responds to best. It definitely smells like damask rose, which I love. An incidental bonus, it seems to have improved the softness of the cuticles on my hands.
If you have finicky skin that needs non-greasy moisture, serious cleansing, but irritates easily, consider this. Skip the muslin cloth, and wipe off the emulsified lotion with a *clean* cloth or cotton pad, and consider a double cleanse if you are very oily.

I got the jar/tub of this in a duo set on sale at sephora a while back, so I didn’t end up paying the full price of $60CAD (woah .. what.) I definitely would not pay full price for this. Is it bad? No. Is it great? No.
A few reasons why I would not repurchase:
– this stings my eyes when I try to remove my eye make up, which is bizzare to me given it’s a face cleansing balm…
– as others have mentioned, it’s not the easiest to get completely off my skin. I also feel like sometimes there’s a bit of a film left behind
– I don’t like that I need to use a washcloth to remove this cleanser. I just feel like that’s an extra step that some other balm/oil cleansers don’t require
– price
A couple of good points:
– it removed my face makeup well (for eye makeup, see first point above)
– it has a very faint rose smell but nothing overpowering or that I would be concerned about putting on my face
– I like what Ren as a brand stands for (relatively clean ingredients and cruelty free)
Would I recommend this? Not unless you can get it on sale and you use a separate eye makeup remover normally anyway so the stinging eye sensation doesn’t bother you. I don’t hate using it but I do not plan to repurchase this really ever. I do love their glycol lactic radiance mask if you’re looking to try some of their other products out.

I do like this as a first cleanse at night/makeup remover. It is not the best have used (Clinique Take the day off) but it is good.

I love balm cleansers and I bought this as part of a set just to try it. I use it to remove my makeup. While I feel that some luxurious balms like the Emma Hardie or the Sunday Riley Blue Moon can still function well as a second cleanse, this always feel likes it doesn’t come off well enough with a washcloth to facilitate its use as a second cleanser. As such, the price feels a little steep for something you would be removing makeup with but cant use in the AM or as a second cleanse in the evenings on days when skin is feeling parched.

I was surprised to see a lot of negative reviews I love this balm like crazy! I have the big tub of it, so I haven’t had the struggle of squeezing it out like some people mentioned thankfully. The tub packaging is very convenient and easy so if you can get your hands on that one, definitely choose!! I think this does an amazing job at removing all my full coverage foundation, bronzer, blush, eyebrows, etc. I have not tried to use this over my eyes because I tend to not like to use cleansers for that, I always use a cotton pad and liquid to take eye makeup and then my face is separate. And I did read reviews that claimed this stuff stings sooo….I’m not gonna take my chances! I know some people have a gripe about it not being amazing for eye makeup but that isn’t what I wanted it for so its not affecting my rating whatsoever. Anyways. I use this as my first cleanse, then I always go in with a second deeper cleanser with the clarisonic, and then if I happen to be exfoliating that day (chemical peel etc), then that’s the third step. I’m definitely not the type of person with a quick 2 minute skincare routine I take my time and have lots of steps but it honestly keeps my skin perfect I haven’t had a zit in forever ever since I started thoroughly executing my routine every day.
Bottom line: this stuff is great as a first cleanse, really gets all the surface gunk off before you go in with the deep cleanser. Will buy again 🙂

This was a massive fail of a product for me and I’m struggling to find anything good to say about it. As a cleansing balm it only works if you’re wearing the very minimum of make up (i.e. eyeshadow and nothing else) or have a completely bare face; it’s practically impossible to squeeze out of the tube so anyone with mobility issues in their hands would definitely struggle; and it smells AWFUL! The scent is definitely rose but there’s some underlying aroma which to me made it smell like sour milk.
At £23 for 100ml this is vastly overpriced, especially considering all the negative points it has. For half that price you can get a really decent cleanser like The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing Butter which is effective at removing make up and doesn’t smell like a mouldy vase of flowers.

I have oily combination skin and I purchased this to use as a makeup remover on dry skin. I love balm cleansers and thought I would love this but it is a bit of a mixed review depending on what you want to use this for.
I found that massaging this into dry skin to remove makeup was a waste. I ended up using quite a lot of product as it tends to work into the skin rather than breaking up full coverage/long wear formulas and it is less than useless on mascara of any sort. Add to that it stings your eyes – a lot. If you wear light make up and no mascara then it might work but I had to move this to my morning cleanse.
As a morning cleanser I still work it into dry skin and use a cloth to remove. It washes completely clean but I don’t feel stripped or dry afterwards. You can get this off with splashing but I just prefer a cloth.
The packaging I have is the white squeeze tube. It was a bit hard to use at first but as the weather gets less frigid or if the heating is on I don’t have to struggle with it. One note – you cannot leave this in the shower or near any splash zones. Water will get in between the tube and the cap which gets into the balm and starts to turn it to the cream/milk that you get when you wash it off. I found that annoying but not the sort of thing that’d prevent me using it again. This was just ok for me, not spectacular but more than nice enough to finish the tube and consider repurchasing at some stage. For warmer months I expect I’ll need a morning cleanser with more oomph but so long as you’re not very oily or looking for a makeup remover I’d recommend trying this.

I’m paranoid with my skin not being totally makeup free, so I was looking for a facewash that really cleans of makeup. This one does just that! (Check!) The smell and texture are nice, you need to massage it onto your face for a minute or two, I even leave it for a bit longer, it feels so soft and nourishing.
Some reviews wrote about problems getting it out of the tube, but for me it is fine. It just seems that there is so little of it, I am used to my facewas lasting for 3 months, but this one does not look like it will last that much.
I am kind of one bottle for everything person, and I read that it takes mascara off well, so I had high hopes for this cleanser to do everything. Unfortunately… first time had no luck with getting mascara off even after 4minutes of mushing my eyes, then I figured maybe some woter may help. Oh dear! I am not trying that again! It does irritate, even though My eyes in general are not that sensitive. So I still need additional cleanser for mascara.
Overall, I am satisfied with product, it is nice to use, does not dry out skin and leaves it really clear. Cons: keep away from eyes.

I used this product once and the moisture was sucked right out of my face. I also tried the cleansing milk and same result. Must be a specific ingredient. I have used Cliniques Take the day off balm and enjoy the scentless product much better than this one. No fine lines are noticable after that product has been washed off.
I am still trying to regain the moisture back. Beware… More expensive products are not always worth the price tag. I wish I could have had better results. Maybe it cleaned too well.
I cannot use toners on my face and experienced the same dryness I would have gotten if I slathered on a bunch of oil removing toner. Ren products are not for my super dehydrated, super sensitive skin.
