Unfortunately this cream cleanser has now been sadly discontinued as of March 2019, around the world. I have visited many sites that sell Dermalogica and all of them state this to be true and they also confirm that Dermalogica itself has no more stock of Essential Cleansing Solution.
This cleanser is both water soluble and is also able to be removed with tissues (tissued off). It is now replaced by a more water soluble foaming cleanser that one rinses off with water, do not leave a layer of this behind on the skin after cleansing as this now needs to be fully rinsed off the skin due to it’s many surfactants/detergent cleansing agents. I have written an extensive review on this new cleanser called Intensive Moisture Cleanser and it simply isn’t fit for it’s intended skin dry skin type.
The previous formula (Essential Cleansing Solution) was perfect in that it was buttery and hydrating, luscious and beautifully rich without being heavy, left skin feeling conditioned and nourished, it could rinse off easily with water, or tissued off (tissue off cleanser) or removed with a warm flannel at the basin or in the shower.
Very gentle it contained soothing safflower oil and other nourishing emollients, unfortunately the new cleanser whilst refreshing, features far too many surfactant ingredients for my liking, dry skins do not need that amount of foam in their cleansers, this newer cleanser, is more suited to normal and even combination to oily skins, it needs to be reformulated and sold for their intended skin type (normal, combination to oily) but certainly not dry skins.
PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD FORMULA!!!!!

Used this milky and non-foaming cleansing cream when I traveled to a cold and dry country and I came back with a perfectly nourished face, while my body was itching uncontrollably from cold rash. Super love this product!
No pimples too!
I used this with a combination of 4 other Dermalogica products. You can see full review and recommendation at

HAHA! To the last poster Melissa I thought you wrote that they were discontinuing this product. My heart actually skipped a beat and my jaw opened. haha. This product absolutely is essential in my skin routine, especially when it needs some TLC. I don’t wear foundation so I only need a cleanser to get rid of the dirt and grime. I have dry dehydrated skin and this does not irritate my skin at all. I even used it last year when I had super sensitive skin to another product and this save and calmed my skin down completely. At the same time I used the intensive moisture balance moisturizer and my skin loved this stuff. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this cleanser!!!

If they discontinued this product, I’d have a meltdown! Love it. ????
I’m surprised at some of the disparaging reviews here. So here are tips on how I use the product. I suspect that people are taking a different approach and thus getting worse results.
I have combo skin with an oily t-zone and dry cheeks. I only use this hydrating cleanser on my dry cheeks. I have different products for my oily forehead and nose. And all of my skin is sensitive, so I’m happy when products don’t break me out.
TIP 1: This creamy cleanser is simply not a make-up remover. It’s too hydrating to achieve that purpose. Instead, I use an oil-based make-up remover that is made for dry skin on my cheeks. Garnier makes a good one that’s inexpensive. Then I use a small amount of this Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution as a 2nd cleanser to get rid of any oily residue from the make-up remover and to complete the cleansing process.
TIP 2: This cleanser is deceptive in its creamy appearance. You still need to use just a small amount even though it looks like lotion. So I probably use a pea-size amount, at most, on my cheeks. I might be using as little as 3/4 of a pea against my slightly damp skin. The slight dampness in my skin helps to quickly spread the little bit of product. I suspect that some people might be getting dryness from the product because they’re simply using too much of a cleanser. And in the mornings, I just need this small amount of product to quickly remove my overnight moisturizer.
Your naturally dry skin will thank you if you treat it with this product!

My skin seems to love this creamy cleanser the most. Whenever I try a different cleanser, whether gel or foamy, I break out. I bought the 500ml bottle and I’ve just finished it after 12 months.

I love this cleanser so much. After 3 years of combatting with acne, this is the only cleanser that works for my skin. It cleans without stripping of my skin. My perfect cleanser🙌

Quite possibly THE WORST CLEANSER I’ve ever used in my life. Seriously if I could give this no lippies I would. I’m beginning to hate Dermalogica and think their whole philosophy on skin care is a total sham. I was sceptical from the start, after using Ultra Calming cleanser and hating it.
The texture of this cleanser is nice, a rich non-foaming cream. It takes of my minimal makeup, although I’m not sure how it would perform for those that wear foundation etc. That’s where the goodness stops.
At first I thought this cleanser was making me breakout…it started with little red bumps along my jawline, where I typically would get acne. But then after a couple of days of using this I had a full blown itchy, red, bumpy rash ALL OVER MY FACE! It was particularly bad along the perimeter, scalp and jawline. Now, I’m left with irritated itchy skin that looks terrible 🙁 I’m so pissed off, and thoroughly unimpressed.
I note other reviewers have said this broke them out. I’m not surprised, this just seems to sit on the skin and not rinse clear off…thus resulting in acne or as I experienced, a rash. I must be allergic to something in the ingredients? But overall, this is horrible and I’m crossing my fingers that after paying almost $50 for the 500ml bottle I can return this crap.

I am a fan of Dermalogica products so I decided to purchase a travel size (30ml) bottle of Essential Cleansing solution. My skin is dry/combination, I tend to get breakouts on my chin & have very dry cheeks, forehead & nose.
I used this once a couple of months ago and my skin has still not recovered from it 🙁 It left my chin & cheeks with horrible breakouts. I cannot get rid of them. I do not have sensitive skin so I rarely have a reaction like this to a product.
Please be aware that this product could end up giving you worse skin than what you started off with. I am still on the hunt for my HG cleanser needless to say!

It’s a simple cleanser. It leaves your face feeling clean, bright and hydrated. A notch up from dermatologist approved wash products. I use this daily when washing my face. Has no smell and feels good on my face. Sometimes when I press my fingers into my skin with this product I can subsequently “dig” out pimples with my fingernails. So I recommend using this product after steaming your face as well.
