Neutrogena’s Deep Clean Cleansing Oil has to be without a doubt one of the most if not THE most cost effective, efficient and well formulated cleansing oil on the market. It can be purchased exclusively in supermarkets, chemists and pharmacies, though there are more and more specialty make-up stores that are carrying it.
Cleansing Oil’s have been around at least since the 1930s. But back then Cleansing Oils were mostly almost exclusively mineral oil based and had to be removed with a warm, damp washcloth. Formulary techniques in cosmetic chemistry allowed cleansing oils to emulsify off the skin when water was then added to the oil on dry skin. This allowed for the product to turn into a milky emulsion and then rinse off the skin easily without leaving behind any oil or grease whatsoever. Shu Uemura pioneered this new emulsifying cleansing oil in the late 50, back then it was mostly used for geishas, kabuki artists and made famous by the likes of Shirley Maclaine and Marilyn Monroe. Erno Lazlo would also use the cleansing oil method but not in the emulsifying way, that would need to be taken off with his famous cleansing bars and plenty of water.
Since that time cleansing oils have been a staple in many skin-care lines high and low, premium and luxury right down to the budget friendly option of Neutrogena’s formula which I will now pay more attention to.
First of all a cleanser is a cleanser is a cleanser. In the world of cosmetic ingredients there are only so many ingredients that can take off make-up and the day’s grime without disturbing or harming the skin. It is for this simple fact that most skin doctors and Dermatologists will highly recommend that you not fuss over your choice of cleanser. Simply buy one that is well formulated, non-drying, PH Balanced (as most are today except alkaline bar soap) and preferably fragrance free. This standard goes for all types of cleansers from wipe off solutions like micellar waters (which are nothing more than water-based make-up removers), wipes, toner cleansers and water cleansers to foaming gels, foam cleansers, gel cleansers, cream and lotion cleansers (that must be removed with tissues, cotton wool or washcloths). Long story short, your cleanser must be GENTLE.
Following along the lines of my favourite beauty guru Paula Begoun, a cleanser should remove everything from the face at once. This is why water soluble cleansers are not only the most convenient they are the most efficient way to do this. This is because unlike pulling and tugging at the skin which is what happens when you use standard make-up removers that must be wiped off (the same goes for wipes). A water soluble cleanser is able to remove most if not all make-up in a jiffy and most if not all of it is rinsed down the drain. Splash your face with water, apply your water soluble cleanser, rub in circular vigorous but gentle! motions for a a few second all over and rinse face with water until all traces of cleanser and make-up, sunscreen, oil, dirt etc are gone. Then gently pat dry. This is the most gentle, effective and time friendly way to cleanse. No standing over a basin with a box of tissues, cotton wool (pads, round, squares etc) wiping off the day ineffectively and possible injuring your skin by the constant pulling no matter how gentle. If you see skin being pulled your pulling at your elastin unnecessarily. The reason why I am making this physical point is because of the way I see people cleanse too hard. Take it easy on your face it is not a punching bag, treat it with care!
Since water is plentiful and because water slips over the skin easily, along with the cleanser it reduces traction and makes for better slip, your hands can glide over the skin easily removing make-up with your water soluble cleanser.
The reason why cleansing oils in general are better for this first stage of cleansing that is make-up removal (if you wear it) is because it takes off everything! and I mean everything! Since oil is oily there is nothing it can’t miss whilst on the skin, It grabs onto any spec of stale make-up and oily grime with ease, and once splashed with water it emulsifies then rinses of beautifully without any problems.
Follow this with a foaming cleanser or non-foaming cleanser if you prefer. This is what is called double cleansing, the first cleanse, cleanses the skin of make-up and the second actually cleanses the skin. You only need to bring out a deep clean cleansing oil like this if you wear a full face of make-up each day, including liquid eyeliner (especially liquid liner) and hard to remove matte foundations and long wearing lip stains etc. After all this has been beautifully removed proceed with your second cleanse.
So this is what you are going to do, go to your vanity and bathroom, either use up, donate or throw away all your wipe-off style make-up removers and cleanser (especially wipes) and replace it with this fine and sensible bottle of cleansing oil. This is now your make-up remover and cleanser in one. This is especially important for those with severely dry skin who want to have a way of removing everything gently and completely without drying out their skin and also who want to use water not wipe it off.
The only time you are to be using a wipe off cleanser whether they are wipes, water based removers, oily removers (duo phase removers) is when you have absolutely no access to clean water for a proper facial wash. That’s right ladies and gents, so this means if your are camping, on an airplane, stranded and have no access to running water whatsoever, that is the only time you can go ahead and use a wipe off product but make sure to use two or three, and wipe till the cotton or wipe is clean and then apply your toner if you use one. But please do not make a habit of it.
Cleansing Oil’s are the most convenient way to cleanse the skin and I highly recommend this product, cleansing oil first then your foaming cleanser. That’s all folks!!! XOX

Its work on me, but it doesnt work on my waterproof mascara and i am sad about it because i love to wear mascara most of the time and i have to use my micellar cleansing water. But this cleansing oil works on me pretty well!

I got this from my work as a sample to try out about a month ago, wasn’t too excited to try it out. A customer this week was looking for it in my store and she told me she loves this product. Decided to try it out tonight. I used it as directed, dry hands/face. Rubbed it into my skin and onto my eyes, paying attention to saturate my eyelashes. Left this on my face for a solid 30 seconds, then added a little water to my hands and started lathering. I could tell not all my (non-waterproof) mascara was coming off my eyelashes, but when I got out of the shower I looked like a raccoon. VERY unimpressed with it’s ability to remove eye makeup. Did leave the rest of my face feeling clean without being greasy or stripped. May continue to use this once I’ve used the Neutrogena bi phase eye makeup remover first, but definitely would not purchase this product. Scent was pleasant and not overwhelming.

Another product I had high hopes for that didn’t work out. I’m always on the lookout for a cheaper DHC Deep Cleansing oil dupe and thought maybe this was it. It kind of met my expectations but there are three reasons I will not be repurchasing: 1) Does not remove eye makeup completely, especially my non-waterproof eyeliner: 2) The taste is truly nasty, just try washing your face without getting cleanser on your lips: 3) It made me break out. I haven’t had this many zits since my teenage years, approximately 40 ice ages ago. It’s back to the DHC for me!

I love this cleansing oil. It’s light weight and it emulsifies beautifully. It has a synthetic green apple scent that will appeal to the younger crowd. I use it to remove water resistant sunscreen and bb cream/foundation. On Halloween it removed waterproof eyeliner with ease. This oil turns milky white when it comes into contact with water and rinses clean which is my favorite feature. It uses mineral oil and other surfactants to break down oil/makeup but it is gentle and leaves skin feeling clean without residue. I’ve tried other drugstore cleansing oils and this one is my favorite. The bottle has a pump that dispenses as much oil as you want which is also a huge selling point as other oils have had clumsy leaky pumps. If I want a deeper cleanse I use Ceraves hydrating cleanser and it will remove the thickest layers of makeup and sunscreen.

I bought this and I never looked back.
I have tried Shu Uemura’s cleansing oil, they feel good but the cost is too high. This is priced reasonably and it works wonders. I have bad experience with other drugstore cleansing oil but this is the bomb.

I wanted to try this cleansing oil in order to find an inexpensive replacement for the DHC, MAC, and Josie Maran cleansing oils. This did not work for me. The first time I used it, I needed more than 2 pumps to remove light makeup (foundation and powder). I then proceeded to use it on my eyes and not only did it burn, it didn’t even remove my NON-waterproof eye makeup. I had to use a different makeup remover on a cotton ball to remove the rest. I haven’t been impressed with any drugstore oil cleansers yet. The only good thing about this product is the light scent.

I’m in my 2nd bottle now. I LOVE this product.
I love the fact that it doesnt contain soap (not foamy), but you can still feel the ‘soap-like’ sensory once you emulsify the oil in your face. It can really clean up my daily (super light) make up, which basically only contains IOMA moisturozer, Kiehls BB Cream, MAC compact sheer, MAC blush n eye shadow, NYX eyeliner and Maybelline mascara.
I only use 1/2 pump. Massage the oil on my dry face in circular motiom, especially on the waterproof mascara. Then I washed my hand, and use my wet hand to emulsify the oil and turned it into light foamy texture. I massage my face again, and them wash it off.
Just to make sure it is clean (just a habit), i wash my face again with Olay Cream Cleanser.
Fragrance is okay, nothing special. I would love to have the packaging more travel friendly though. The oil sometimes leak out when I travel and put it on my luggage.
What I love the most is that I think this is the best face cleanser for my super dry cheek and super oily T Zone face

Initially I was dubious about oil cleansing but boy I was wrong. So gentle and nourishing. Removes heavy make up and unlike many other oils, it rinses clean. Leaves my skin feeling soft and clear. No break outs, excessive oil or drying. I still need a moisturiser as my skin is dry, but being such an effective and gentle cleanser it has helped control occasional breakouts and I enjoy using it so much I no longer feel lazy enough to skip make up removal when I am tired. It works well with a wet face in the shower or just splash some over dry skin at the sink, massage and rinse. I have tried hundreds of cleansers but have been using this for more than 6 months and it is my favourite. Oil convert, right here!
