This product was a big meh for me. I expected more for the price and all the talk about ‘colloidal silver and gold’ and ‘crushed pearl powder’. But in the end, this is really just your basic gel cleaner, only at 10x the price.
I used this mostly as a second cleanse after removing my makeup first with a balm or oil cleanser. Basically all it needed to do was remove any leftover greasy film – not a hard job. It managed to do that but it didn’t catch the last traces of eye makeup which was disappointing. I would definitely not recommend using this as a primary cleanser to remove makeup.
Texturally, I will say that this is a true non foaming gel cleanser (alot of gel cleansers end up being really foamy and stripping). The Sjal doesn’t foam at all, it actually dries into a translucent sort of lacquer if it isn’t washed off within the next couple minutes. I appreciate that as it never felt drying or harsh on my skin. But it didn’t have any visible effect on skin either – it didn’t ‘tighten and lift’ my pores or really do anything for them.
The packaging was another thing I disliked. The lid is very poorly constructed – when I first opened the box, I immediately noticed the lid looked sort of loose and worried that it hadn’t been sealed properly. But it turned out that the the bottle is just weirdly designed – you have to snap the lid on instead of unscrew it and it doesn’t snap completely shut either. Once you open the cap, there is a pump dispenser but it has no lock mechanism on it, which makes it totally unsuitable for travelling. Because of the not completely closeable lid, oxidisation and ingredient degradation are potential issues. Towards the end of the six months or so I used this cleanser, it started to smell funny. Not like offensively bad but…odd. Sort or like milk that’s past the expiry date and is a day away from turning sour.
So would I rebuy? Definitely not. I did a little research and basically it appears that the skincare benefits of gemstones and colloidal gold/silver are completely unsubstantiated by clinical evidence. The entire Sjal line appears to be based on this claim that their products are special because they’re gemstone-infused, crystal-aligned, and all that kind of mumbo jumbo. I am unlikely to pick up any of their other products either tbh.
