Okay, so first thing to get out of the way is that this candle (like all Diptyque products) is eye-wateringly priced. It’s definitely a luxury indulgence more than an everyday item. With that in mind, it truly is lovely. The scent is a rather green white floral with a soft creamy accord that mellows everything out. And while Gardenia is probably not the hippest scent out there, I honestly think that’s a good thing in a home fragrance. I want my home, generally speaking, to smell clean and delicate, not like a crowded Arabian soukh. While the latter has its charms, oud-based fragrances with spicy accords can easily feel oppressive.
As for the burn time, I’d say it’s definitely less than 60 hours, but I’ll forgive that because the scent really lingers even after you put it out. I also experienced no tunnelling issues with this candle. That’s a huge plus for me because, with a luxury item like this, aesthetics are important and tunnelling is incredibly unsightly.
Based on my experience, I would say that Diptyque’s regular sized candles (190g) are just the right size to burn at home – any larger and the burn time which you need to commit to in order to avoid tunneling becomes unrealistically long. I’d recommend burning the candle for at least 2-3 hours the first time you light it so that all the wax on the surface melts. If the wax at the edges hasn’t melted, it becomes pretty difficult to restore the candle’s original smooth surface.
As for the jar, it is gorgeous and easily repurposed (I personally like to use my old Diptyque jars for storing makeup brushes, q-tips, cotton pads, skincare/perfume samples, etc). When the candle is finished, just toss it in the freezer overnight and scrape out the hardened wax in the morning. You can also use hot water to soften it a bit but be careful as the label may peel off if it gets wet.

Surprisingly, I only recently purchased Gardenia for the first time. And I am sure glad I did! This candle could not smell more like actual gardenias, which is truly amazing. The throw is terrific, and the scent lingers long after you’ve extinguished the candle. I have about eight candles that I’m burning at the moment (not all at once, of course) and Gardenia has been among my favorites. I can’t believe I waited so long to purchase this scent, and have already ordered more.

I love gardenia also and purchased the smaller size of this candle to burn in my bedroom. The fragrance is light and beautiful and very delicate…just like a gardenia. Love.

I love gardenia, and diptyque got their version so, so right. This smells like a really lovely, understated gardenia and is so light. Puts me in a good mood and makes my living room smell incredible.

Such a pretty scent. Just dreamy, soft and lovely. Nothing overpowering about this one, it smells delicately floral, with the most beautiful Gardenia scent. I’ve bought this candle twice. As someone who is very sensitive to fragrances (especially stinky ones) I can safely attest that this candle is just simply elegant. I can burn it while I’m eating and leave it burning for long periods of time and it never grates on my nerves. In fact, the scent is so soothing that I often forget to put it out- it has the tendency to become part of the room, instead of an additional element in it. Diptyque candles are extremely long lasting; I mistakingly left my first Gardenia candle burning overnight, and in the morning, only about half an inch had burnt down. Pricey, but worth it.

Just barely gardenia. The top contained both gardenia and lily, and I’m not sure the latter wasn’t as prominent as the gardenia. After a while, both florals disappeared. I’m left with a generic cashmeran base.

If you talk the Parfum it is heaven! If you talk the EDP forget it. That’s it.

This is a timid floral with none of the sharpness or green notes that I appreciate in a white floral. It’s sweet and light, (yet without any zing or sparkle), and it just falls flat for me.
In fact, I find it quite tropical. It’s creamy, jasmin-y banana-coconut, fruity. When I wear it, I get much more of the banana, some citrus, and coconut. It’s too sweet.
For a tropical floral, if that’s what it’s trying to be, it lacks any of the spice, woods or musk that makes beachy scents pop and linger. This has no weight. There is absolutely no sexiness in this fragrance. I actually prefer Bronze Goddess or Soleil Blanc to this if I want a beach scent. And there are many white florals I’d rather wear, including the uber-inexpensive Malachite. I’m wishing I spent the money on something else.
This stuff has such poor longevity and weak projection. It’s completely gone from my skin in an hour at most.
And of course, it’s just an approximation of Gardenia using Jasmine, Tuberose and whatever else. I don’t find it even close to real Gardenia, it’s almost all Jasmine. Blue for women by RL is a much more realistic, (and much less expensive), Gardenia to me.
I own a few Chanels, have sampled almost all of their current offerings, (Cuir de Russie is my hands down favorite from the Exclusifs). Gardenia is, to me, the lamest and least ‘Chanel’ I’ve ever tried. No strength, no longevity, no stink and no gusto. I have the EDP, and it’s as fleeting and light as a skin scent. And forgettably boring to me.
I tested it in Greece and bought it at the airport later on another trip. I regret it. It’s just not for me, and rather disappointing for a Chanel, never mind an Exclusif.

I wanted to love this. White florals and Chanel are two of my favourite things when it comes to perfume, but sadly this wasn’t what I’d hoped it would be.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s smells wonderful for the first half an hour. Then it’s gone. And I don’t mean that it’s changed on the skin or morphed into something else. I mean, I can’t smell a thing after about half an hour to an hour. I don’t tend to have this issue with other fragrances, but my skin eats this perfume. I used a very generous amount of my sample and I tried spirtizing myself in store, but each and every time it fades extremely quickly.
Despite the fact that it’s a lovely, elegant white floral mix (and if it did last on the skin I would adore it) it’s too weak and too short-lived to warrant investing in.

This smells like happiness in a bottle! A Spring summer daytime favorite of mine. Very unobtrusive, you need to reapply several times throughout the day.

Creamy sweet white floral (Jasmine, gardenia, tuberose) tinged with orange and fruit and very rich and big. Does not turn indolic on me (I have an issue with white florals and Caron Narcisse noire extrait vintage, acasciosa, Schiaperelli shocking and piguets Baghari are all somewhat problematic). Oddly it smells on my skin like a melange of white florals with orange added on top. I am a dabber, and this scent seems like it would be a bombastic powerhouse, yet it lies relatively close to the skin once applied. Although it seems to disappear, I do gets wafts of it hours later. I have the trio of extraits: Cuir de Russia, Bois de Iles and Gardenia from when they were released in the 1990s? My Gardenia is more gold In color than the green tinged liquid in the photo above.
Chanel fragrances seem dense to me; they occupy almost tangible olfactory space ( I am thinking of coromandel right now, but Gardenia does also). It is a tad throat scratching or powdery but not green pollinated. (I think of FM carnal flower as a green pollinated tuberose). Somehow I think of this as more delicate than SL a la Nuit (Jasmine plus SL warm dry down) or SL Fleurs de oranger. If you want a gardenia that is more modern or conceptual, I recommend the very different Sotto Luna Gardenia by Andy Tauer and if money is no object, there is also the blue cheese gardenia by JAR. I don’t necessarily recommend SL Une Voix Noire, because to me it’s not very noire and almost more about strawberries, rum and tobacco with some white floral thrown in.
Many reviewers state that this is more tuberose than gardenia. I think it’s more Jasmine and orange. But, if you are in the Tuberose camp, I think Creed Tuberose Indiana ( tuberose plus honeysuckle, LOTV, tuberose, citrus plus a creed base) is worth a try as well. Also worth a try for a very reasonable price (vintage miniature bottles are all over eBay) is Guerlain Mahora.
I recall that I have a sample somewhere of vintage of Tuvache Jungle Gardenia. When I dig it out, I will update. However, I should add that white florals are not a category that I am particularly familiar with, and it’s quite possible in a blind smell test, I might not be able to distinguish this from a gardenia or white floral oil from Whole Foods.

I used to be very down on this fragrance because it doesn’t smell like gardenia, and it still doesn’t, but I kind of appreciate it more for what it is – a bombastic white floral. It smells like the floral section of the original Poison minus all the fruit and spice. Sometimes I’m in the mood for loud and cheerful and this fits the bill on those occasions.

‘Gardenia’ mixed with ‘Beige’ is my ultimate favs of the collection. I love Chanel perfumes to begin with but this very ‘ME’. It somehow mixes so well with my body chemistry that it actually smells like I and the perfume are one (if that makes sense). I am not very good with notes plus everyone else has done a wonderful job describing them, but i will say that it is a very unique fragrance that is absolutely worth the $240 for the 200 ml bottle. I am not into ‘eau de toilette’ versions of fragrances but this collection is an exception. What i love even more is that it lasts about 7 hours on me which is fantastic for an eau de toilette. This is a very sophisticated, classy, luxe, warm, comforting, clean (not soapy or laundry clean), and rich fragrance. I am in total love. I wear this all year round. Definitely repurchase!
Btw i do like to wear ‘Beige’ on it’s own but i try not to wear ‘Gardenia’ on its own as much because i find that it is too strong by itself.
My other favs include 1932 (which is supposed to smell like ‘jewels’ and I agree), La Pausa, Bel Respiro, Cuir de Russe (or something like that), and Cormandal.
