I switched to using this after finishing my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and I have to say that I like this brow pencil a lot better. Compared to the ABH Brow Wiz this is waxier, less creamy and perfect for the ‘natural’ look that I am going for since I have to slowly build up the colour. It has good staying power – only if you don’t smudge or wipe it. It lasts 7+ hours on my oily eyebrow area.
The packaging is sturdy, pleasing to the eye and has a nice weight to it in comparison to the plastic packaging of the Brow Wiz. The bristles of the spoolie are somewhat denser and longer than the Brow Wiz spoolie. The price might seem outrageous upfront, but if you break down the price and calculate the cost/gram this Hourglass brow pencil is a much better value compared to the Brow Wiz in the long run ($317.65 CAD/gram for the Brow Wiz vs. $100 CAD/gram for this Hourglass brow pencil).
For your reference, I have warm, very dark brown hair that shines a reddish-brown in the sunlight but my eyebrows are ashier/not as warm. When I was using the Brow Wiz I used the shade ‘Dark Brown’ which was too brown and not ashy enough. ‘Ebony’ and ‘Granite’ seemed like they would be way too dark. This brow pencil in the shade ‘Ash’ is a happy medium between the colour of my hair and eyebrows. I’m really pleased that I’ve finally found my good shade match when I switched to using this.
The only downside to this eyebrow pencil is that it doesn’t take much force for the ‘lead’ to break. I put it in the front pocket of my backpack and brought it to school one day only to have the ‘lead’ fall out of its chamber when I tried to use it the next morning (I am not a person who throws their backpack around). It’s still completely usable when I popped the ‘lead’ back in, but it will still fall out if I accidentally hold the pencil upside-down. That is just a minor annoyance I’d like to mention.
Otherwise, this is a great eyebrow pencil that I would recommend trying if you are in the market for a new one. I will keep repurchasing this unless I find something better (which is highly unlikely).
