Wow, I seem to be in the minority here. I hate it when that happens, because I want the internet to validate me.
I love LORAC products generally, in particular the oh-so-buttery eyeshadow palettes and the Front of the Line PRO Liquid Eyeliner, which is my HG liner. Unfortunately, LORAC doesn’t ship to Australia, and it’s surprisingly hard to get hold of. I have to use a parcel forwarding service like HopShopGo and have them buy from Sephora on my behalf (Sephora doesn’t even take Australian credit cards).
Luckily, due to some crazy wormhole effect I assume no one has picked up on yet, Amazon does ship a few LORAC products to Aus, including the “Royal PRO Eye Collection.” This value set includes the liner, one PRO Mascara and a little compact of three metallic shadows, all for $28, which is only $5 more than the cost of the liner! The shadows are lovely, too (gold, brown and ivory).
So that’s how I ended up with the LORAC Pro mascara, virtually free. Firstly, the mascara itself is great. My HG mascara is Smashbox Full Exposure – it’s thick, jet black, and absolutely will not clump, not matter how clumsily I apply. It goes on like smooth, glossy wet paint and dries quickly and crisply with great lash definition. It doesn’t feel waxy and damp, and it doesn’t smudge or flake.
LORAC Pro mascara is virtually indistinguishable from Smashbox. I think it’s a great product. By the end of the day, I have no smudges or flakes at all. It’s a very “clean” mascara in that respect.
But that’s where the good news ends. I HATE the pear-shaped brush. HATE IT. I’m actually stunned that anyone else would like it. I came here expecting to find it universally reviled. People are saying the skinny end of the brush is great for reaching the little lashes in the inner corners, and that’s probably true, but the chubby end of the brush is TERRIBLE for reaching the outer corners!
Most of us either zig-zag the brush, or roll it inwards, to make sure the brush reaches the roots of the lashes and then sweeps upwards from there. But that’s practically impossible with the chubby end of the pear-shaped brush. It just isn’t designed to fit in the outer corner between the upper and lower lashes.
It also makes it impossible to do the upper and lower lashes separately. When I try to coat the upper lashes, the bulky brush bumps into the lower lashes too. That makes it harder to control where and how you apply the product.
Ultimately what you end up doing is using the pointier end of the brush to do everything. But like all mascara, the product tends to gloop on the end of the brush, so you have to wipe off the excess before applying, and even then, when you’re use the END of the brush to apply, you’re not going to get the product as evenly and as fluffily applied as you would using the WIDTH of a brush. “Fluffily” is not a word, but it should be.
So, yeah. I mean it’s fine. But I hate the brush. I have three of these, and I’ll use them, but what I’m doing is using the Smashbox brush with the LORAC product. They don’t screw together properly, so I’m keeping the Smashbox brush with the Smashbox tube and the LORAC brush with the LORAC tube, and I just open them both at the same time and use the…whatever, you get the picture. Ugh.

I feel that mascara is probably the second most personal preference choice in makeup, next to foundation. What I like, many others don’t and vice versa.
Pros: BLACK. Really black. Lengthening, slightly build able. The thin point of the Christmas tree shaped wand made it easy to get to the tiny baby lashes in the corners of my eyes, both inner and outer. The thicker part of the wand helped get the outer part to flare out a bit on the outer corner on one eye and gave a more rounded shape in the middle of my lashes on the other (I was experimenting, I usually like the outer corner to wing out), if you’re into long spidery lashes this does great. No funky smell.
Con: I want the best of both worlds, thick and long lashes. While it is really lengthening, it didn’t give me as much volume as I get when I use my HG Cover Girl Lash Blast. The formula is thin and clumped up quite a bit on my lashes with a second coat, so I combed through them with a lash comb. The brush took me a bit of getting used to and I poked myself in the eye. That could ease up with a bit more practice using it. I got a bit of flaking the first time I used it within an hour. Feels stiff.
Overall, MAYBE I would buy it again. I have to keep working with it. I am hoping the formula will dry out a bit now that it has been opened for a while. I wasn’t wowed when I used it just by itself, but when I paired it with my Lash Blast for a second coat, WHOA mama! I got the look of falsies!! My lashes touched my eyebrows they were so thick and long! No flaking on that time, it could be that the Lash Blast sealed the Lorac.

I like this as much as my HG, Loreal Million Lashes. When I used the Loreal on one eye and the Lorac on the other, the Lorac eyelashes looked longer but the Loreal lashes looked thicker. I’ve used it twice and it doesn’t smudge or flake, but it was easy to remove. I’m ambivalent about the brush, but I love the lengthy fringe I got from the product (esp when used with their liquid eyeliner pen which is FABULOUS).
