I don’t have acne or scars or melasma, my skin’s in pretty decent shape. I just have some light, sporadic uneven pigmentation from sun exposure. I’ve had some luck but nothing miraculous with several OTC options from acids to retinols, and have always used oils. I needed something stronger to give me even skin.
I used the BrandMD compound version of this, prescribed and sold by my dermatologist’s office. (HQRA+) The actives are 7% Hydroquinone, 0.05% Tretinoin, 0.1% Hydrocortisone and 1% Kojic acid. It’s formulated as a light lotion, there’s glycerine, vitamin E, and some other moisturizers.
I paid $77 for 1.7 oz. The dual stage container protects the ingredients from light and air, the pump rotates up and down.
This was a temporary treatment before starting simple Retin-A, which is what I wanted. The Dr. recommended a few months of this first to even out my skin tone before starting a Retin-A anti aging maintenance routine. It’s not something I would use for longer than 10-12 weeks.
I experienced some of the irritation issues and peeling from the tretinoin. It’s expected. After 8 weeks I saw a significant difference in my skin tone and evenness, thanks to the HQ. I’ve stopped using it daily, now use Retin A .1%. But I still use the HQRA 7 two times a week for two reasons: I want to use up the bottle before it goes bad and I am happy with how it performs. I also use it for spot treatment.
If you’re like me and just wanted to even your complexion, well, it worked for so I reccommend.

HQRA 7 is simply Retin-A mixed with 7% hydroquinone. Neutraderm also make HQRA 3, which is Retin-A with 3% hydroquinone. The hydroquinone acts to remove any sun damaged dark spots. I’ve been using it for years and am very very happy with the results. All my old acne scars are gone. I get this pre-blened fomula from my dermatologist and it only costs &60. You get almost 2 oz. which is enough to last for months. HQRA is .0.25 Retin-a and the HQRA 3 is 1% Retin-A with 3% hydroquinone. Not only has this cleared up my skin, it also smooths fine lines away. Anyone over the age of 30 should be using one form of Retin-A or another. It is completly safe to use, and my face simply glows.. Don’t forget Vanicream SPF 50+
