This is the best mineral cream eyeshadow I have found. Long-wearing, doesn’t crease, looks great. I frequently use the two lightest shades as primers as well as stand-alone shadows. My sensitive skin has never been irritated by these.
I have two colors: Illuminare’s Cafe Latte, which is a soft light beige that melds beautifully into light to medium skin, and Latte which is a yellow-based ivory. Of the two, I prefer Cafe Latte. It makes it look as though I have perfect eyelid skin and makes blue eyes stand out. I have actually used this color on male actors when doing professional makeup and it looks very natural and no one can tell they have anything on their lids.
These come out of a tube soft and blend smoothly. I have lots of brushes but I find the best method is to apply with my fingers. The tubes last for several months because you don’t need much per application. You can still layer powder shadows over if you want. I often use Illuminare as a base and then use a powder shadow as a crease color. These shadows hold up extremely well all day and they are my favorite summer eyeshadows because they also offer sun protection.
The darker colors work well as brow shades but can be tricky to blend as shadows. Cappuccino works as a brow color for many blondes. I’m not as fond of the shimmer pearl shades, Perla Bianca and Perla Rossa, because the consistency is not as uniform or smooth and I’ve had to shake the tube. You don’t have to do anything fussy with the regular cream non-shimmer colors; if you use them regularly, the contents are not prone to separation.
When my skin is sensitive and everything seems to cause irritation, these eye colors are still safe to wear. I’ve been using these for over ten years. I buy other shadows, too, but I keep coming back to these. I consider Cafe Latte a must-have shade.
Illuminare is cruelty free and vegan. I’ve bought many tubes of this in ten years.
Only one con:
The formula contains parabens. I’m posting the ingredients in case there’s anything in there you’d like to avoid.
$18 per 0.25 ounce tube.

Cappuccino can be used as a water resistant brow color for blondes and light brown hair. You have to use a good brow brush to use the eye colors this way, and I suggest a very light hand as it’s easy to overdo them and end up with a theatrical look. The darker browns are suitable for brunettes. I use them mostly as eyeshadows and that’s the focus of my review.
I have Latte for eyeshadow (a light, yellow-based ivory), and recently ran out of my favorite, Cafe Latte, a great beige cream eyeshadow that is a good base for almost any look. Within the past year, I’ve been experiencing trouble with dry, sensitive eyelids that are easily irritated by various cosmetics. I use eye creams at night only, usually soothing ones that are fragrance free and contain collodial oatmeal or have a formula with lipids or ceramides. I have to be very careful what I buy to remove makeup (one of the few makeup removers I can tolerate is from Paula’s Choice), and if I am selective and careful, the redness will go away instead of getting worse. Cleansers that are too harsh can aggravate the condition. I generally avoid cortisone because steroid creams can actually cause problems if you use them all the time. So I’m sensitive.
I can always use these eye colors. They have SPF, they are mineral based, they don’t crease (unless you put something really greasy on underneath, and if you do, please don’t blame the product), and the two lightest colors look natural enough that I have even used them on men (actors) and no one can tell. Sometimes I don’t wear them for a couple of weeks, but as soon as I have a problem with irritation, I reach for them again, like a Band-Aid. Sometimes I apply powder shadows on top. Sometimes I don’t. Each person’s skin is different. If the texture is a bit dry for you, you can put a lightweight moisturizer under it, but obviously if you have oily eyelids, don’t prime the skin with anything beforehand. A little experimentation might be necessary. But they are great for sensitive skin – even for sunburned eyelids – and cruelty free.
A tube lasts for months, but each tube is $18 so it can add up if you buy lots of shades.
A word about Perla Rossa: There are only a couple of shimmer shades and the texture is different. It has been improved from the original runny formula you had to shake, but it’s still not as creamy and easy to spread as the mattes. It is a nice color, though.
The other day I had to take off a MAC eyeshadow (Carefree) that set me off. I had a red, irritated patch of skin on one eyelid, and returned to my safe, reliable Illuminare Latte. The yellow undertone also helps conceal redness. I’ve been through several tubes of these eye colors. I have bought them from the Illuminare website but also from a professional makeup store called Cinema Secrets in LA. Highly recommend.
They have good staying power as brow color, and in hot humid weather will probably out-perform most brow pencils. Just make sure you have a good shade match to your hair color and a high quality brow brush. It requires a bit more skill than a pencil. The only one I’ve used for brow color on myself is Cappuccino, and it’s a warm taupe. I’ve seen the darkest colors, such as Espresso, work nicely on Asian brows, especially if the eyebrow hair is sparse and you have to fill in.

If you like gels for filling in your brows and you’re looking for something super water-resistant, you might want to try these eye gels. This brand is sold in California at Planet Beauty, and at Whole Foods, but otherise it can be ordered from Dermstore, Skinstore, and Beautybridge. The eye colors can be mixed and matched, and used as shadows, liners, and eyebrow color. Even with all this use, one little tube can last a year! I have no idea if SPF 15 on eyebrows is helpful or not, but it’s nice to know it’s there. I LOVE Mocha Cinnamon for my brows.
