As confessed on MUA many times, I am an eyeshadow junkie. I also have very sensitive skin, especially my eyes. So, every once in awhile my eyes freak out and I get allergy-related issues, severely limiting how often I can wear eye makeup and the kinds I can use. Because of this, I do NOT hold these shadows to the same aesthetic standards as regular ones. They are reasonably smooth and the fact that I can use them when I can’t use anything else is what’s relevant to me.
That said, Gabriel eyeshadow is my fave for when my eyes do this periodic freakout. The Dove is my favorite shade (greyish taupe); it is very versatile and I use as an overall lid color. Sometimes by itself, sometimes with a highlight. Sometimes I’ll use Charcoal in the crease; I like Navy as a liner. Sable is a soft rosy brown, good as a transitional color but not dark enough for a liner or crease. I don’t have Chocolate Brown; I got the ZuZu Espresso instead ’cause I was looking for a “cool” brown of more depth. (When my eyes are already irritated, reddish colors are the LAST place I want to go!)
I also have Aubergine and Forest Green. Aubergine and Navy have the best color density for liner or deep color. Charcoal isn’t as dark as one would think, can be a bit patchy. I also have several of the related ZuZu Luxe shadows, which tends to have more stylish colors and includes some frosts. HOWEVER, they are also just a bit less friendly when my eyes are upset, especially the frosted shades. Also note I don’t like the Ivory or Bisque; the ultimate matteness of these shades just doesn’t work as a highlighter for me.
Gabriel recently released an eye primer; I didn’t use it till just the last few days ’cause I’m now in the throes of an eye freakout. I will say, when I use it as I’ve learned to use other eye primers (extremely sparingly!), it works quite well, and does not cause undue irritation (in fact, compared to other primers, it’s downright soothing). (Do NOT expect glue-like perfection, however; it does what is intended–provide a smooth surface for shadow to bond to, enhance intensity of the shadow, and extend wear.) For the record, I have the Neutral, which is quite light color-wise.
