I join others in being SO disappointed in the recent (Christmas) Yankee Candles I purchased…as my review, I wanted to share the email I just sent the company…I think this says it all…
…
I am unsubscribing to emails and offers from Yankee Candle, and I wanted to tell you why.
I bought 4 candles a few days before Christmas ~ “Christmas Cookie” and “Christmas at the Beach” for my daughters, and “Christmas Wreath” and “Gingerbread Maple” for myself. I was so EXCITED, as I had not purchased a Yankee Candle for a long while, but remembered how, in the past, even an unlit one would perfume my entire little kitchen!
Well, Christmas (and all the hubbub with it), came and went. I finally got to sit down at my painting table, and light my candles!! First, still being in the “Christmasy” mood, I lit Christmas Wreath. Now, this candle smells wonderful “cold”, with my nose right down in the jar, about an inch from the wax, but it ends there…when burning, there is no “throw” (I have learned this term in researching whether or not I am alone in feeling this way about Yankee Candles)…of course, I CAN smell it some when it’s burning, if I get right down over it, with the risk of lighting my eyelashes on fire…but there is NO scent in the room. I thought it was just me. I switched over to the Gingerbread Maple, hoping for the best. Nada. The same. THEN I got to thinking about how my Mom said her senses of taste and smell diminished when she grew older (except she said this when she was 80, and I am 58), and I was honestly a little worried about that! It was then that I decided to take my concerns to the Internet, to see what other folks were saying, and I was relieved to discover that it WASN’T just me. But, I am still sad.
I personally feel that the quality of the products has declined markedly since my kitchen was so richly perfumed by even an unlit Yankee candle… Right now, I am doing a little experiment with the remainder of an “Autumn Leaves” Better Homes and Gardens jar candle that I purchased at Walmart back in the fall, and the Gingerbread Maple Yankee candle ~ two rooms away, I can smell the ‘Autumn Leaves” (which you wouldn’t think would actually have much of a fragrance…I really bought it for the color…but it is DELIGHTFUL), but the Gingerbread Maple…nothing. One online commenter said, “if you stripped off the label, I doubt anyone could tell the difference between a Yankee Candle and one purchased at Walmart” ~ well, I disagree…in that the Walmart candle could actually be smelled, burning.
The “powers that be” at Yankee Candle may not even realize, themselves, how wonderful Yankee Candles used to be… or maybe they do. Not that it matters, but I would feel like I was getting much more value for my money if they actually increased the price and returned Yankee Candles to the richly fragranced lovelies that they once were. As for me, I won’t be purchasing any more unless this happens!
Thank you,
Anne Berbling

This is specifically in regards to Yankee’s LEMON-LAVENDER scent. I am always trying to find a candle that will actually fill my (small) bedroom…and nothing ever seems to do the trick. I tried the LAVENDER-VANILLA, and it did smell nice…but didn’t fill the room. Thus far, the only scent I have found that does the trick is the LEMON-LAVENDER. In fact, I purchased BLUE SUMMER SKY, as well…and it literally smells like burning wax. Not unpleasant…just very weak. I have a feeling that any of the scents with lemon in them are the most powerful. I want to try the Meyer’s Lemon, next…but I worry that it will be too “kitchen-ey,” if that makes sense. Anyone else discover a super powerful scent? I love musky, lavenders, patchouli, and grass type scents. I used to live for the McIntosh Apple…but I think I overdid it in college and now can’t really stomach it.

I’ve been consistently disappointed with my efforts to find a Yankee Candle I enjoy. I’ve tried, I really have. I went in knowing I wasn’t interested in candles that smelled like baked goods or Glade air fresheners. But there seemed to be a number of more botanical, herbal and woody options so I thought I would be sure to find something I liked.
Nope. Sandalwood smells nothing like sandalwood, just a faint burning-candle scent. Lavender smells nothing like lavender. The holiday Christmas tree type scent (I forget the exact name) was faint and unremarkable. Sage and Citrus gets excellent reviews but it was a vague unidentifiable, if inoffensive, smell. And every time I go into the store I have to walk through a cloud of gag-inducing cherryberrycupcakepuddingpiefakeflower smell. I am thinking the people who love Yankee Candle are fans of the sweet, cloying artificial foodlike smells, because if the store is any indicator, there are LOTS of those and they are STRONG.
I won’t be trying again. I prefer to look for candle companies that focus on well-blended, well-balanced scents. Yankee Candles aren’t cheap, so why would I spend that money on mediocrity? There’s stuff in the world that smells *good*. I honestly don’t understand the popularity of this store, let alone the number of people who swear up and down they’re the best candles in the world. It must be the power of marketing.

I like Guerlain, Serge Lutens, Annick Goutal, neom organics, and … Yankee Candle. I find the fruit and baking frags to be acceptable but I really love the perfumey ones. I’ve not come across similar in other ranges. Here’s my quick and dirty guide to some of the tarts. These give a stronger, faster hit of fragrance than candles in my limited experience of candles.
Child’s Wish aka Summer wish – green, pea pods, mild but noticeable throw. Think eau de camille’s shy cousin
Garden Sweet Pea – gentle, airy, sweet, soapy, hint of violet, a bit fake but pretty. Mild to medium throw
Paradise spice – the banana is not obvious but softens the spice for a creamy initial impression, that banana note burnt off in about an hour and it becomes more cinammon, still nice. Strong throw in tart. Tragically weak throw in small candle, might be better in a med. candle.
Pink Sands – floral with quite a lot of fruit, sweet, think Britney curious. Not beachy or sandy to me. Medium throw
Pineapple Cilantro – straight up pineapple. Juicy. Very strong throw
Tuquoise sky – watery, musky a bit sharp, like a man’s cologne. Very strong throw
Beach wood – I’d put this in the men’s cologne category with turq sky and midsummer’s night. Smells v faint cold, but the tart quickly releases a robust, rather oily masculine scent. I’m thinking wood seasoned with linseed oil. I think it would blend well with other scents, maybe a fresh flower but I like it well enough on its own. Like having an outdoorsy strong, silent type about the place. Steady medium throw.
Beach Walk – This is fabulous. Floral, fruit (tangerine), and salt. Spacious and airy without being ozonic. Medium throw in tart. Can barely smell it in the soy wax signature tumble though the cold throw is good. I may try it in med. candle cos I love it so.
Sun and sand – less floral muskier version of beach walk, warm, minimum coconut, tart seemed to burn off in a few hours but it was a pleasing time. Medium throw
Sicilian Lemon – quite sharp lemon, not sugary or sweet. Weak throw but still detectable and burns off quickly, but that’s to be expected from a citrus.
White Gardenia – surprisingly good compared to gardenia perfumes for the skin. Creamy. I’ve not melted it yet to test it but seems quite strong, I can smell it through the wrapping.
What I don’t like is the anxiety-inducing way they discontinue their more unique scents. Fruit and food scents are dupe-able and interchangeable but Beach Walk has been discontinued in the UK so I’m stocking up.
edit – I’ve discovered an Irish co. called candle belle. Their passionate kisses is soft, sweet, fruity, milky loveliness and their channel 5 a rather good take on a certain EDP, esp the ylang ylang and sandalwood.

I could not find a review about YC lucky shamrock so I write one; I adore YC candles I always purchase trough the web which is a risk, with lucky shamrock I truly got lucky, it has a nice throw not too much to be overpowering so that your guests are gagging from the smell!, It is very fresh like cut grass, if the color green could have a scent? it would smell like lucky shamrock, I am very fortunate to obtain this large jar in the netherlands. I probably will never be that lucky again ,since this one is rare in my country, if you come across this one?, go for it even if it is not st patricks day!

I have tried lots of Yankee Candles and Yankee Tarts. They are inferior to other brands such as Slatkin – they do not give as good of a throw and many of the Yankee candle jars are flimsy and do not hold up well.

Purchased Apple Cider. I was really looking forward to a wonderful apple / cider scent in my kitchen. Instead I was greeted with a kerosene smell that caused us to open windows and turn on the range fan. The candle is now in the trash. Will not buy this brand again.

I believe that Yankee candle’s have lost their way. They are no longer the great smelling candles they once were. They seldom burn right, usually the wick is too small to burn to the edges (yes I leave them lit for a long time). So you get too small of a flame for that big of a candle which doesn’t two things, doesn’t create a big enough pool of wax to even smell it, plus it doesn’t burn good and forms a hole in the middle. Yes I know that you have to light it and leave it lit long enough to burn to the edge….with Yankee candles it never burns to the edge. They don’t have enough scent in the candle to smell either. I remember when I first started buying Yankee candles, they were so strong that you had to blow them out after a while because the whole house would smell so strong….NOW you can’t even smell them unless you use a lamp burner because that is the only way to get a decent wax pool. I only buy them when they are very cheap during their clearance sales a couple times a year. I’d rather buy the $4 old Williamsburge candles from Kohl’s…they burn great! The only thing they had going is the selection of different scents but if you can’t smell them then what’s the point. They are way over priced for what they are now!

Wanted to write specifically on the “Sparkling Lemon” Yankee fragrance which have only just discovered but doesn’t appear as a named fragrance in the MUA reviews – absolutely gorgeous smell of sweet meyer lemon with notes of citrus lime and bergamot orange. Since discovering Yankee Candles I have been trying out many of the tart fragrances to select my favourites before buying the larger 2 wick tumblers which I love. This is a truly fantastic fragrance and is suitable for burning at any time of day/evening – it will be a firm favourite of mine along with the beautiful “Water Garden” which is fabulous also and wouldn’t be without.

I love Yankee candles, they are fragrant and so much fun! Yankee keeps coming out with new fragrances to keep customers’ interests up, I like that. For the most part, Yankee is quite reliable with their products – most of their candles have a pretty strong throw and there are so many to choose from. Of course, there is the occasional dud – but you don’t have to worry as Yankee has an excellent return/exchange policy. I don’t know how many times I exchanged a candle simply because I didn’t like it. Yankee candles are not cheap, but they do last a long time and there are often coupons available. I’ve always liked the jar design, but lately I’ve been favoring the simple 3-wick tumbler candle. I will continue buying Yankee candles but perhaps not as much as I did in the past, because recently I discovered Bath & Body Works’ Slatkin & Co. candles, which burn very cleanly and one of their latest fragrances, Island Margarita, really got me excited.
