One of my favorite mouth washes but just noticed it’s by Johnson & Johnson, so not cruelty free!! Repurchased all over the world. Strong taste, but leaves your mouth fresh and clean.

I’m wondering how many of these negative reviews are from folks who only used this product for a few days before giving up on it. The first time I tried it, it felt like oral napalm! So stingingly painful! I had to spit it out after 10 seconds, and even still I got a canker sore (I’m prone to those). I dumped the bottle out in the sink and swore I’d write a letter to the manufacturer.
But the next morning, I noticed that my stubbornly coffee-stained teeth were noticeably lighter. They looked even better than they had when I’d forked over $400 for a custom-fitted whitening program from my dentist. And Crest Whitestrips had merely caused intense sensitivity while making my teeth more susceptible to staining– no thanks!! So, I began wondering if maybe I could tolerate the Total Care Plus Whitening long enough to really improve my smile. It did take a few days of slight stinging and mild tooth sensitivity, but by Day 5 I was swishing away with no discomfort. The initial discomfort definitely went away with continued practice, and I was gradually able to keep the stuff in my mouth for the recommended 60 seconds.
I definitely recommend this product as the fastest and most effective whitening product I’ve ever used– and I have antibiotic-stained teeth (from meds taken 35 years ago) in addition to more superficial food stains. Give it a try for more than 2-3 days, and you may well find you get acclimated to it. I tend to use it for 1-2 weeks at a time, then switch to a milder alcohol-free mouthwash when my teeth are back at their whitest. I do this to avoid tooth sensitivity and because the listerine has a medicinal aftertaste I’m not crazy about (but it does keep my breath fresh for hours longer than any other mouthwash). As an added bonus, I don’t need to floss as often when I use this product because the foaming action dissolves interdental plaque, too.

I’m quite fond of the whitening mouthwashes from Listerine so I figured I’d give this one a try. WRONG. Several days into using this, my teeth became extremely sensitive. I never had problems with their other whitening products so I don’t know why this happened. I will not use this product again and will switch back to the pre-rinse.

I’ve been using this mouthwash for over a year, maybe even 2…I don’t remember exactly. But, WOW. This mouthwash is extreme. It burns like crazy. I’ve never had a mouthwash burn like this before. What I noticed is that your mouth builds up an immunity to the burn, so if you stop using it for a while & go back to it, It burns even worse (personal experience). It feels like it literally kills your tastebuds & maybe some bad breath germs? It definitely paralyzes your mouth. I honestly, barely noticed any difference in the whitening aspect of this. My arm & hammer toothpaste gave me more of a whitening effect than this did. It does contain Hydrogen peroxide, which is what is in almost all whitening products. Another thing I noticed, is that this mouthwash only kept my breath fresh for 10 mins after I used it. It gives you a really bad after taste. It also dries your mouth out like crazy, which causes even more bad breath. I don’t know why I used this for as long as I did, but I’ll probably never buy this again. & from reading some other reviews, I didn’t realize how bad this was for my teeth! I’ve been using this for a long time, I hope my teeth haven’t been effected. Overall, this doesn’t really whiten your teeth that much or kill bad breath, let alone even protect your teeth. & if it can’t do those important things, what else is this mouthwash really good for?

“Ouch!” is all I have to say about this product!
Ok, I will have to admit that I have sensitive teeth..but still, even if my teeth were strong as ever I wouldn’t know how rinsing/gargling etc with this brew would be possible.. It stings, it irritates.. If you ask me, it’s way too aggressive for your mouth, esp. your gums etc.
I might try dipping my toothbrush into this and brushing my teeth with it a little bit..to see if the product whitens.. But as a mouthwash? No way Jose!

This really whitens your teeth. Almost instantly. But my goodness, it’s like washing your mouth with sulfuric acid. And I’m not exactly the “delicate” type. I can use the advanced whitening strips every day to the end without batting an eyelash. But this stuff is lethal. I swear, it erases my taste buds. The only way I can tolerate this is by diluting it with water. I wonder if it’s still effective? Hubby uses it w/o any problem, though. I’m giving this 3 lippies because it IS effective. But for me, it’s way too strong.
