I bought this brush for contouring after reading several raves and makeupalley reviews. Can’t hate it more. Upon first application, the metal edge got revealed too much and scratched my face real bad that I wish it was bamboo like tarte or plastic like nars. Wouldn’t buy such a short haired brush with narrow edge anymore. If it’s not densed enough, I’m afraid that it will just leave a permanent scratch mark.
Returned it for 168 brush and it’s the perfect one for contouring.

I like this brush. Any density in the brush means a lighter hand is required to blend. It deposits colour exactly where you want it so starting light is a good idea and applying little to no pressure when blending makes a world of difference. It helps to diffuse the colour without losing the sharpness of the contour. For my heart shaped face it works really well but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a soft contour as that’s not really it’s purpose. This brush is for drama and people with high angular cheekbones who find traditional contour brushes don’t provide enough dimension.

I bought the #163 from MAC for the purpose of contouring. It is supposed to work best with cream products, but can be used for powders as well. I had heard that this brush was comparable to the NARS Ita #21 brush which was sold out EVERYWHERE, so I decided to give this one a try.
Unfortunately I regret purchasing this brush. For starters, it is quite expensive in Canada. I don’t mind paying for a quality brush that I will use, but this just didn’t work out for me. The #163 offers great PLACEMENT of product in the hollows of my cheeks for contour, however it stays exactly where you first place your brush. The short, dense bristles make it near impossible to blend out your powder (or cream) contour. I ended up with the unfortunate “brown line” on my cheek. When you do try to blend with this brush, it is so dense that it rubs off the foundation underneath!
I can see how this brush would be great for applying cream products UNDER the foundation, where you don’t have to worry about blending as much, but for my purposes it wasn’t what I was looking for.
The brush itself if very well made, with densely packed bristles that don’t shed, and a long, heavy handle. It is a beautiful brush to hold and admire.
I do have the NARS Ita brush, and it is the perfect contour powder brush! If you are deciding between the MAC #163 and the NARS Ita, definitely go with the Ita. It is totally worth it in the long run.

I bought this brush to use with my sculpting creams, I just don’t think I’ve gotten the hang of it – it just won’t blend out nicely for me. The idea of this brush is genious, but I might need a little help to making this brush work for me haha – right now it just sits in my brush holder looking cute and chubby 🙂

I had the lady at the MAC store use this brush on me before I got it so I would know how it worked and what it felt like on my face before I bought it. It applied the contour cream beautifully, even blended it wonderfully. But, when I took it home and tried it myself it was a mess. I think this brush works the way it says it does (because I saw it), it just takes some practice to get a good technique going. Having said that, I’d only use this with cream products, but I like working with cream products for contouring anyway because using powder is messy and tends to just make my face look dirty.
EDIT: So, I’ve been working with this for a few weeks and I think I’ve figured it out. Before I do my foundation, I use this brush (with a very light hand) to apply the sculpting creams and blend them out just a little bit. It looks crazy but the trick is to take a soft, fluffy powder brush (I’ve been using an Eco Tools one) and use a powder foundation on top to blend everything together. It tones down the warmth of the sculpting creams and everything winds up looking VERY smooth and natural. Overall, I’m really happy with this purchase now. Having said that, I could definitely see why some people wouldn’t want to deal with this brush or the sculpting creams.

I think I initially wanted this brush because it was sold out everywhere!! When I finally tracked it down from a hold closet in a pro store, I was thrilled. Wanted it with Coffee Walnut contour cream, but that was the only color worth buying in the collection, so sold out immediately.
I have used this brush every day since I got it, and if used correctly, is amazing.
Dip the bottom corner in an ashy brown color, then place just under the cheekbone and press. Dont try to blend. Put on blush as usual, then blend together with a clean brush. The best application I’ve ever seen for sculpted natural looking cheekbones. Just don’t expect the brush to do too much. What it does do is awesome.

This brush is a nice thought but not a winner. I prefer the #109. It is too stiff and short to allow an easy application because it doesn’t really “fall” into my cheek hollows. Rather, it’s as if I’m drawing a line on my face. Will be returning.

The bristles are synthetic, firm yet silky, and very dense; think Sigmax kind of dense. The bristles are comfortable to the touch (i.e. hand, face, etc.). This is great for a well defined contour. I would not suggest pick up too much product at one time with this brush. You don’t want to get the product to far down the bristles and have a difficult time cleaning. I have the same issue with my Sigmax brushes since they are so dense. Expect a little more drying time as well for the same reason.
The brush measures 6 inches in length from the top of the bristles to bottom. The bristle themselves measure slight more than 1/2 an inch in length, 1.75 inches in width from side view, and 1/2 inch in width from the thickest point on the top view. The brush feels light weight and I compared to my MAC 190, it feels the same.
