This scent is a bit of a mystery to me! Judging by the bottle, you would think this is a really deep and complex perfume. I have the men’s Encre Noire, and I love it. This is like night and day in comparison. It honestly smells like fresh laundry to me. I’ll pass thanks.

For me, this went on as a strongly synthetic ‘peony’ note, that particular chemical note modern perfumers use to represent peonies, but doesn’t smell anything like them. (not that I dislike that note, it just isn’t true to anything in nature). Lilies came in shortly, smelling very pretty, drying with the other florals to a bright pink peony and pale white lily scent. Pleasant and nice, but I don’t get any of the base notes. Just a definite Chiffon-dress-for-garden-tea type of floral. Nice, but not dark in any way on me. A day time floral scent only. Eh.

I was seduced into thinking this might be a feminine version of Encre Noir, ie smokey vetivert. The vetivert is there, just, but is overwhelmed by a huge amber and a somewhat synthetic smelling rose. Considering the nose behind this was Ms Nagel, I was disappoined. Either she was having an off day or, more likely, Lalique were stingy with her budget. No repurchase I am afraid. Two lippies for the symphonic opening and the fact it is well worked out.

The name and the charismatic black flacon suggested that I was on the verge of a good experience and the top notes did not disappoint. My first 30 seconds with Encre Noire Pour Elle was a blast of deep and dark richness that made other recent “Noire” fragrances smell like baby water. The nearest smell I know would be Costume National’s red bottle, but Encre Noire Pour Elle was 2x stronger and truly opulent. Then something interesting happened: all disappeared, and a rose, flat Turkish rose fragrance emerged to the point where there was nothing else. The rest was exactly like old make-up powders or rosy talcum powders that I detested as a kid. Encre Noir pour Elle was devoid of the vetyver that made its male version smell so good to my nose and it felt stuffy.
