Opium Pour Homme by YSL is a fragrance that was ahead of it’s time. It’s harder to find these days, but it is a lovely scent. I find the regular Opium EDT to be pretty unisex, but this is completely different. It has a sweetness that is complex and oriental like. I think if they re-released this today, it would be a huge scent. Guys who enjoy spicier scents will love this!

YSL OPIUM HOMMES (1995) is so different from 1977’s OPIUM (femmes) that they cannot be compared. OPIUM HOMMES opens with a bold blast of bergamot, lemon, lime, menthol, and a burnished warmth of bold spices and regal balsams, including tolu, olibanum, myrrh and benzoin, all united with a perfectly authentic note of thyme. Black pepper, a bold lemony ginger and star anise add their intrigue, and soon one detects the presence of patchouly, vetiver and oakmoss, leading the smeller to wonder if OPIUM HOMMES will develop into a spicy chypre.
But the fragrance is a surprising shapeshifter: in an hour or so, the bold warmth greatly subsides… revealing a wonderfully sweet– almost gourmand and caramelized— base of vanilla, (possibly a dry cocoa?), wintergreen and what smells for all the world like horehound and sarsaparilla– in other words, root-beer!– kissed by the licorice-y note of anise, and a subtle deer-musk. The push-pull of spicy/piquant herbal against sweet, rooty/vanillic confection makes this scent ever-fascinating, wonderfully complex.
OPIUM HOMMES is a dazzlingly appealing, warm and sweet scent that, in my observation, is irresistible to ladies: it garnered me more conversations from strange women on the street than any other fragrance I have ever worn, period.
As an earlier post-er noted, OPIUM HOMMES simply has to be tried in its eau-de-parfum strength…. where the bewitching oils— with obviously a high proportion of natural EO’s— are more concentrated, and sit on the skin like a burnished, aromatic coin. This is one of the last great, true Orientals created by a department store house… before the synthetic “AXE”-like celebuscents replaced them with their cookie-cutter banalities. Highly recommended.

Great fragrance for a man or woman. I bought this on a whim and I’m so glad I did. Warm and spicy with a bite from the opening citrus. This reminds me of Joop! in that it’s warm and snuggly, great for Fall and Winter days. I’ve worn the original Opium for women in EDT and parfum since I was a kid and I’ve never really liked it. Opium for women IMO is an assault on the nose and the peace of everyday life. Not that it’s a bad thing it’s just a fragrance you can see , and obviously smell, coming from a mile away. It’s a powerful fragrance and not just in potency. Anyway finding Opium for men was a happy find and this is the Opium I can wear often and comfortably. Will definitely keep myself stocked in this fragrance as long as it’s available.

(EDT) Wow. This is seriously, confidently sexy – smooth and gorgeously inviting. It starts as a woody or slightly smoky, minty (though no mint is listed in the notes) tobacco-vanilla. Then it softens and deepens. I try but fail to adequately describe how good this scent actually is. Its first ten seconds are quite similar to that of Versace The Dreamer, but the notes in Opium pour Homme evolve in a different direction. I agree that Opium pour Homme could be unisex, it’s sweet, smooth and rich. I simply can’t understand why I see this scent everywhere, always heavily discounted, when it’s a much better blended and constructed scent than many other higher-priced current mainstream releases for men. Seriously, try this. Men or women. I’d love to try the EDP now. Will definitely repurchase. Notes: blackcurrant, star anise, mandarin, lavender, galanga, geranium, ginger, pepper, patchouli, tolu balsam, atlas cedar, vanilla.

Basicly I like it but I admit it could be too harsh (my DH wore it for a while). It is a “dark” fragrance and absolutely not for summer.

This can be very nice on the right man. I actually like Opium on men better than the women’s version on most women. The women’s version tends to smell a bit “dusty”, at least on me.
The men’s version is very sweet and spicy. On some men it would be too much. On the right guy, it can be very sexy, if a bit overpowering. Definitely for evening wear, not for a work situation!

This is a review for the *EAU DE PARFUM*(!!!) version of OPIUM FOR MEN: Oh my God! This is really a *b*r*e*a*t*h*t*a*k*i*n*g* oriental fragrance!!! It lasts forever and ever. The hottest oriental stuff I know!!! The power of the Eau de Parfum is unbelievable. The EAU DE TOILETTE smells completely different. Test it – you will agree with me. I recommend only the EAU DE PARFUM. EXCELLENT.

Mmm. I only got this one recently, so I’m not sure whether I’ll be sick of it later. But for now, I like it a lot. Spicy, exotic, masculine, and sexy. I’d want to get closer to sniff a man who was wearing this. I like it much better than the original opium for women.

It is one of my first perfume.
It reminds me of the beautiful BALENCIAGA FOR MEN which is discontinued.
Very sweet,spicy,balsamic,warm…
My advice:to wear for an evening with your lover or when it is cold outside.
Stays well on skin…
Truly a beautiful oriental scent for men!
Love it….

I think this is my DH’s last bottle because I usually grumble when he wears that (especially when we have to sit in the car together after he put that on!)… I liked it at first but with the time it started to give me a headache. This is not a bad fragrance, it is complex, dark and well blended Oriental and it suits my husband quite OK, because he is tall, darkhaired, handsome man. But there is something in this fragrance that is definitely a way too sharp and too cloying…
