Purple Rain is a dark purple, shimmer polish. Disappointingly, the shimmer is not as visible on the nail as it is in the bottle, unless in direct light.
The formula is runny, so I managed to flick the nail polish all over myself during the application (I am not a novice). Having said that it’s highly pigmented so you will only need 1-2 coats. It dries semi-matte, so shiny top coat is a must.
I am not if the cap is supposed to be removable – it looks like it should be, but mine doesn’t move. Also my outter cap has become all tacky and peel-y.
I have mixed emotions about this polish. I expected to love it, because of so many raving reviews. It’s okay, but I see nothing special in it. I wouldn’t repurchase.

Sexy, dark warm purple. It’s expensive but so worth it. And to the reviewer a few posts below me who says she likes it because of Prince: No it’s not stupid 😉 Prince is LOVE! ????????????????????

I love this polish. It is a gorgeous deep and warm purple with very subtle fine red toned shimmer throughout. The formula is really easy to apply, going on smoothly and not being too runny. I do believe two coats makes for a perfect application though (I never normally only apply one coat of any polsih though, so to each her own- hee hee). The wear is pretty good. Mine will last (on my short & dry nails) for about 3 days with a top coat before chipping. Once it starts chipping thoug, it chips rather quickly. I do also use my hands quite a bit (in water often, have a baby, work, running around). The bottle is beautiful and well made, but the large/deep cap makes it a bit cumbersome to use. It is not like the Chanel caps, where the exterior cap pops off, and there is a more manageable cap underneath. I would think for the (crazy) price, that they would have designed this better. As for the polish itself, it is gorgeous & barring price concerns, a must-have. Highly recommend!

I received a full size bottle of this nail polish in this colour in one of my month subscription beauty box. I was quite amazed to receive a full size bottle of this nail polish as the bottle itself cost more than what I paid for the subscription box. On another hand, I wasn’t too excited because I am not a person who wears nail polish and I am definitely not a fan of purple. So, I didn’t bother to even try this on and just put it aside.
However, as weeks go by, I can’t stop thinking about how pretty the colour actually looks in the bottle as it’s not just plain old purple has a hint of red undertones. I finally decided to try it out to see if I should keep it or give/sell it away and boy oh boy, the minute I tried it on, I was completely blown away by it. And my heart was screaming, “I love it, I love it!” For someone who does not put on nail polishes, this nail polish is fool proof, idiot proof. It glides on so easily and evenly and I only need one coat for an opaque finish! It’s so beautiful! While I may not be an avid fan of purple, I am definitely an avid fan of dark colours and the fact that this purple is not those bright kinds actually makes it easier for me to even fall in love with this.
So so so beautiful!
But if you ask me if I would repurchase this? No, I won’t. But only because I am still not a nail polish kind of person (too lazy to do the whole thingamajids) and it is expensive. I just rather spend that much money on other Nars products, like their concealers and their audacious lipsticks. But if you’re someone who likes to put on nail polish, you definitely need this in your life.

This is my go-to nail polish. It’s my only NARS polish, because it’s not really in my price range, but I definitely need to get more of them. I’m just a sucker for purple anything, Purple Rain a dark purple with a red undertone and a very subtle magenta sheen. It’s a very sophisticated purple that anyone can wear as long as you like dark colors. And I love that even though it’s dark, it does not look black.
I’m horrible at applying nail polish and usually use too much or too little but Purple Rain is just so easy to work with. It glides on like nothing else, and as you know it’s hard to get a metallic polish without streaks (even a dark one), but I never get any streaks with it. It’s the perfect storm of a fantastic formula with a just-right brush.
Purple Rain also wears better than any other polish I have. I can use any recommended top coat, base coat, the whole nine yards, but most polishes will chip within 12 hours on me. Believe me, I’ve tried everything. The gel manicure is probably the only thing I can do to preserve a manicure. Usually if I take a bath or do the dishes (even with gloves!), forget it: a polish will just say eff you and chip. I can get Purple Rain to last several days by reapplying my top coat. I know that doesn’t sound like much time to most people, but imagine your own manicure staying intact for a week or more and you’ll get what I mean.
PS: One more thing I have to mention about why I love it, and it’s very stupid: Prince. Don’t judge me.

Beautiful lush sophisticated purple with delicate red particles. High shine, very glossy even without top coat. Not really a purple person but this really is gorgeous and a must have. I have Chanel Taboo, also a deep purple with similar particles/subtle glitter. That is also extremely beautiful in the bottle but which does not translate onto nails – it replicates as a dull dark purple with a merest glimmer of sparkle. It is not high shine and more expensive than the Nars. If you are undecided what to buy, my advice would be get the Nars. Only gripe, the chunky Nars bottle does not have a great handle to hold when applying the polish.

This is my first NARS polish, and it will not be the last. I probably have over 500 bottles of nail polish in my collection (yes I have a problem), and I don’t have one that compares to this polish. First, the formula is phenomenal, richly pigmented and smooth as silk. It could be a one-coater with careful application. The color is absolutely gorgeous and the shine is amazing. It is purple in all kinds of light, never black like some dark polishes. But it isn’t garish, still very sophisticated. It is the perfect blend of the qualities I look for in a polish. Purple compliments my skin like nothing else, and this one is my favorite. A bit pricey, but worth it, unlike Chanel which is pricey, but the quality is not there. This one is amazing. If you love purple, it’s a must have!

This is the only Nars polish I own, I had to have it, I love Prince and I love purple, I had no choice! It’s the most beautiful purple polish I have seen, dark and intense with a hint of shimmer. It applied easily despite the horrid bottle/cap shape and was opaque in 2 coats. Would repurchase.

My only gripe is the blocky handle, I thought it would be a pull-off like other HE polishes. Other than that I call this *shimmering sauce of purple satisfaction*. Now if you are put off by the price try China Glaze Lets Groove for a very close dupe. I have both because my yearning for the “real thing” won out over common sense. *Must have* color in my opinion.

This is a lovely bright royal purple – neither particularly blue nor red tinged but somewhere in the middle (does that make it a true purple?). There are flecks of blue and red shimmer in this polish but the red shimmer seems to be more obvious. It’s quite dark but definitely not black – you can always tell that it’s purple and thats what I love about this polish. Under a good topcoat it almost looks like a foil finish rather than a straightforward shimmer.
I got the mini version of this with a few other polishes. I found the brush to be a little small and fiddly and the formula to be quite gloopy. The first coat was very streaky but the second applied smoothly and I ended up with a nice opaque finish. I got bubbles on my right hand (ie I applied it with my non dominant hand) but the other looks fine.
I applied Chanel’s extreme shine topcoat which makes the shimmer really pop.
Lovely colour and I would definitely repurchase.
