I love the color instantly after the SA showed Film Noir to me. It’s a dark brown, which would look overwhelming in the tube but less so on the lips. Its application is smooth enough (be sure to wear lip balm before applying), not too patchy on my lips, and it tends to not smear so much. I love to pair it with any dark red or purple lip pencils to give more definition to the lips. It would wear off with a couple drinks, though..

As I do to most trends, I fell prey to the chocolate lip. I have no idea why I thought this color was limited, but apparently it’s been available for years. It is a pretty color, and you can make it as brown as you want, depending on liners or what not. What I HATE about it, is it’s patchy. Hours after applying it, it will start to break down and just look horrible. I guess you could just wipe it off and reapply but it’s a high end lipstick. My Wet n Wild lippies don’t even do this. Annoying, but it’s a pretty, coveted color.

This a serious color, as stated in other reviews. You wear it when you want a statement lip, when you feel like entering the world looking like a sepia photograph. You wear it when you want to be noticed and feel a little different. You wear it when you’re prepared to check yourself out in the mirror every couple of hours to make sure it’s not fading in patches. But you don’t care because you feel amazing and it’s totally worth it.

Oh, my sweet, sweet Film Noir <3 I'll admit, I originally bought this for the name. I previously shied away from bold colours and stuck to my cherry blossom pinks, leaving my reds and berries to collect dust. One time I was feeling particularly brave (a week of lectures in college on film noir and femme fatales must have inspired me!) and the rest is history.
To keep things sweet and simple, it's a creamy formula as expected on MAC. It looks super good on my corpse-pale skin but I've seen it worn on darker skintones on YouTube and it's just as alluring! A dark brown with purple/red undertones, this lipstick definitely demands attention. Sometimes I pair it with MAC Russian Red on top so it doesn't overwhelm. Film Noir is a little bit patchy on dry lips so be sure to moisturise well before and let the balm sink in before applying. Then let your sexy femme fatale flag fly!

I love film noir for three simple but very important reasons- it is hyperpigmented, dramatic AND forgiving. Those attributes do not often come together in the one lipstick.
The colour is a dark, sophisticated cacao brown with very little contribution from either red or purple, which is a relief, because many ‘browns’ head one way or the other without staying true. It is almost precisely the colour of 65% or 70% cacao dark chocolate, if that’s a help to you, and yes that means it’s not for everyone. Conversely, it also means it is stunning on a wide range of complexions if only more people would have the vision to appreciate something so rich and contrasty. ‘Pretty’ isn’t everything.
By applying thickly you can achieve an almost black.
The texture is off-matte; more like Ruffian Red than Ruby Woo. There is a slight, five percent kind of sheen but just enough for comfort rather than flash. Because of this generous texture and saturation it’s astonishingly easy to achieve a ‘dilute’ look, either by applying lightly and smudging for a stained effect or adding to lipgloss. Many darker lippys are no good for this because they streak and settle into lines etc with their uneven pigmentation. Very forgiving for a drama shade.
I like it alone but it does play well with other colours and is very useful for darkening and intensifying a range of other lipsticks, from red to other browns and even purples; it always brings something to the party and will create a bunch of dramatic shades for those of us who prefer to mix it rather than pay for it. Stunning when used to darken down a lot of MAC reds especially because of their similar textures and payoffs.
I don’t have a problem with this bleeding into lip lines even without a liner, but I would recommend it for people with trouble in that area, or if you wear a very moist/dewy foundation.
It is medium-maitenance as far as avoiding the ring of death is concerned. But all dark lipsticks wear from the insides of your lips and this is by no means the worst offender in that regard.
I would caution people with very unpigmented lips to apply a lip primer or liner all over first to ensure maximum adhesion.
The best dark brown or black I’ve ever worn.

Film Noir is an amazing dark colour that really does justice to the whole noir theme. I think it goes great on a lot of skin tones as it is a very warm brown with red undertones. At the same time it may clash with any redness on the face so be sure to take away redness on the face when using any type of reddish lipstick. I am an NC30-35 so it is still quite a dark colour on my skin, so it is quite bold but without being too obvious or too ‘attention seeking’ if you will, as it is more brown and natural. I think it’s great for a night out, formal, classy ‘film-noir’ look of course, or for dressing up casual wear. It’s a satin finish so also gives a nice shine where ever light hits which I think makes it less unnatural since if it were completely matte it would stand out more. Some tips! if you pat it on your lips as a stain it very lightly gives your lips more pigment and looks natural, but then again I do have NC30 skin so not too sure about lighter skin tones. I also like to use it as my everyday blush, dabbing it on my hand and heating it up, then applying just a touch of the product on my cheeks– this gives a very natural red cheek colour and not brown or muddy at all, plus you only have to use such a small amount as it is very pigmented. So for me it’s multi-use and very versatile as a blush, a stain and a full on dark lip. Just be sure that your apply it well, possibly with a lip liner or an angled brush so it looks clean, wear it without any other redness on the face besides a little cheek colour, and it looks amazing! 🙂 as for the dryness, it can be a bit drying but lip balm or lip balm + lip liner fixes that. Also exfoliating your lips before applying any lipstick usually helps 🙂
p.s the picture on here makes the lipstick look lighter than usual, I suggest trying it out first-hand. It’s much darker.

This color is a wearable “black.” If you took Brown on the Paint program and clicked on the darkest value you would get mac Film Noir! Lived up to all my expectations on the glamour and excitement of the film noir genre as a lipstick color. Agree with reviewer who said be a little more bold, most people will not think you are gothic just because you are wearing a dark lip color. If you pull it off it’s fashion 🙂 Photographs online have the shade looking much lighter than it really is so make sure you test it at the store before purchasing.

Purchased this at Sally’s today since it looked like a beautiful dark plum. NOWHERE on the bottle or tag at Sally’s did it say that this polish had a MATTE finish. The shade is beautiful when applied but I absolutely cannot stand matte finish and had to put the shine back on using Seche Vite. Will be returning since I hate matte polish and am very dissapointed that it did not indicate this on the bottle. Color is still a beautiful shade if you don’t mind the flat finish.

This was my first MAC lipstick and I used to like it. But now I find it too dark, even though I love dark dramatic colors since they flatter me. And I agree with the review below me. I usually wear neutrals when I don’t have time to do my makeup or my mood calls for them.

Dark lipstick does not mean it’s Gothic. I don’t think people understand a history of make-up and colors. Shades like this are more interesting and unique to see on someone. I know the nudes are so famous these days… but the reason most people wear nudes is because they aren’t that skilled in applying make-up. Nudes are easy, but if you take the time and have the skill, Film Noir is a beautiful shade. Be a little more bold ladies! We are moving into cooler weather so it’s not hard to pull off. You aren’t wearing too much make-up just because you’ll have a darker lipstick on. Keep the eyes neutral. If you apply your lipstick first and then do your eye make-up, it will be a guide of how much to use. Also… ALL dark lipsticks can be made subtle as a stain. Apply some gloss over it and you’d be surprised. You can work with any cosmetics to make them benefit you. Btw, only coal black lipstick could be considered “Gothic”. This shade is used on runways.

this was surprisingly perfect with my skin tone. really loved the colour. unfortunately it was too drying for me and made my lips flake. I’ve since moved on to using clinique’s lippies, but i really do like this colour a lot.
