Skintype: oily/combination, congested follicles, bumpy
This moisturiser does nothing it says it does. It doesn’t purify or clarify or whatever that’s being marketed. It has a weird plant extract smell, which doesn’t really bother me if it gets the job done but it doesn’t, and it leaves behind a very greasy and sticky film. Not good for people who live under tropical conditions.

Umbrian Clay Oil-free Lotion – Pump dispenser – 50ml – $39
I have just bought this and tried 1x. I bought this because I found the Umbrian Clay Mattifying Mask very effective – which btw can be used as a facial wash. My usual oil-free lotion ( CHANTECAILLE Water Flower Fluid ) costs $72 for 50ml and lasts 15-18 months … so this will be saving me money if it works as well, and lasts as long. I am pretty nervous about switching products. The bottle is smaller than I expected, I guess I just expected the same size as the Water Flower Fluid but it is the same quantity and an equally sturdy, quality made bottle and I like the pump dispenser. I definitely smell the cucumber, very pleasant, and it is a nice light lotion – see pic above, which I hope gives a hint of the consistency. I had a sample of the Umbrian Clay Serum so used it first and then applied the Umbrian Clay Oil-Free Lotion – I made one pump press do whole face. I love the fresh scent and after a few hours face feels soft and normal – tentatively thinking good things. I shall up-date in a few weeks

UPDATE #1: I liked this a lot but recently my Hair Stylist commented that my skin looked red and sensitive, a week before a friend, who I hadn’t seen since Xmas, made a similar observation (: I may be using the Fresh Umbrian Clay mask too often and shall go back to using it solely as a mask 1-2x a week, I shall see if there is any difference … if not it could be the Lotion or the Black Tea Infusion – these are the only things I have recently changed in my routine. If redness persists I shall go back to Chantecaille’s Water Flower Fluid and Rosewater.

UPDATE #2 : Redness continued and in addition I started getting a couple of small, very sore, pimple/cysts- these took a long time to heal, I ended up applying Chantecaille’s Healing Mask and that helped so I am moving back to Chantecaille skincare, I doubt I will ever change my skincare again.

Major breakout! Tossed immediately! Used only on my forehead because it isn’t as sensitive as my cheeks and it broke me out in huge painful pimples…I’m so mad

A little about me: mid-late twenties, asian, acne-prone, combo/oily skin. My skin can be sensitive to products and seasonal changes, but is typically oily year-round.
I bought this because I was getting fed up with my oily skin – my face makeup would simply not last the day (I work 12+ hrs a day running around a hospital ER) and I get super oily. I tried other “mattifying” lotions or primers or serums you apply over face lotion, I’ve tried using masks or special cleansers… nothing really works for me for more than a week, or it breaks me out. I happened to have a sample of this (that I forgot about) from Sephora a while ago, so I decided to try it out, and I liked it enough to buy the full size.
TEXTURE:
It is an off-white lotion that somewhat has the texture of thinner Elmer’s glue. I know it doesn’t sound appealing that way, but it does. It sinks in easily for my skin (I use 1.5 pumps) and it provides enough moisture for my face without making it oily or “dewy”. It doesn’t feel sticky or runny, or silicone based. It simply disappears on the face once it’s applied, which I appreciate. I usually let it sit for another minute or two though, while I brush my teeth just so it completely sinks in.
SCENT:
It smells very “marine”-like. Kind of like a cologne. I guess that’s the algae in it. But it does have a smell. It goes away though, so I’m ignoring that.
PERFORMANCE:
This is what really matters, isn’t it? SO; I wear this daily underneath whatever makeup I happen to be wearing (CG Outlast foundation, Garnier Oil-controlling BB Cream, Everyday Minerals loose mineral foundation, etc) and it plays well with everyone. If I’m going out and want to look especially flawless, I will use a primer on top of the lotion (NYX HD Studio Photogenic primer), but normally I don’t use one. It helps my face stay matte or satin-matte for at least 4 hours (That’s saying a lot!), sometimes even up to 6 or 7 hours, if I’m not too crazy during the day. I do wear setting powder on top of my foundation (Maybelline Dream Matte) but I always do, so the powder has nothing to do with it.
When I’m not working or going out, sometimes I’ll just wear the lotion with pressed powder and blush and I don’t have to worry about my face pretty much all day.
No breakouts, no weird rashes, and it doesn’t dry out my skin. It’s pretty good for living up to its word.
PACKAGING:
I like the pump packaging and the simple, minimalist white packaging.
CONS:
There will always be at least a few drawbacks for any product, I’m sure:
– No SPF. I normally have SPF in my foundations, so I don’t care too much, but I have to take extra care to throw on extra SPF if I intend to be outdoors
– The container is not see through so I can’t see how much I have left
Overall, I really do like this product. It’s Expensive at $44 + 13% taxes in Ontario, Canada, but what can you do? I also use this with the Fresh Umbrian Clay Face Treatment bar, which I think is also amazing. Try it, at least a sample size – it’s so hard to find a good lotion for us oily girls!

I use this product as a treatment every three days and my porse have never looked so clear! The best for me is that I only have to leave it one for 2 or 3 minutes! Its quick and easy and ready to go! Now that I am in a routine with this product breakouts are slim to none (I have a hormonal break out on occassion)! I feel so clean and freshed with this product! No excess oil left on my skin but I’m not dried out either!

I think this gets a bad rap – I asked the CS reps and they said it was recalled because that particular batch was bad. I started using it when they put it back on their shelves, and nothing has done better for my skin. I put it on before my primer, and it has calmed my easily irritated break-out prone skin… smells delicious to boot! It’s expensive but worth it – my skin has never looked better, and it melts right on.

I’m glad they recalled this. It stunk to high heaven; I had to hold my breath whenever I put it on, and it didn’t do anything overly miraculous. But now I’m stuck with a stinky face cream that I can’t find the receipt for, so probably I’m out the money it cost.
Thanks to the previous for letting me know it got recalled; I never would have found out otherwise.
