Late to the party considering the last review for the Essie shade Baby Cakes was back in 2010. No matter. I chose this recently at my nail salon and even my manicurist mentioned the color was beautiful. BTW my salon is not the type that says “pretty color” with every manicure, as some do.
So I have good strong natural nails currently filed long/oval slight point. Trying to stay away from dark colors which I love as they eventually stain the nail. Chose baby cakes which turned out to be very unique. On me, its a lavender tinted very pale gray. Super pretty and summery while not being a true nude nor true lavender.
In the bottle there appears to be a pearlized tint, reminding me of a very long ago Loreal shade called Sealily. Interestingly, this leans opague but the slight shimmer in the bottle translates to a finish that is not sheer at all but saved from a heavy matte which in this color range could easily look deathly. Instead – flattering.
Typically Essie wear etc.
I think this shade would be most appropriate for vintage or anniversary markets. Anywhere you want a shade for a good challenge then here it is.
HERE YOU GO OZ! THIN COVER! Now this is where it gets weird. Look at this with the care I received… you may be seeing its tooth seen under my lip right now. There is no teeth along my cheek that gives the look of being the epitome of a latex staple liner or replacement at your nail salon. No front teeth… no lip, no fine lines, no staining, no total drying after makeup and fade (some still do). This looked like this:

bought this because it was in the half off bin at a beauty supply store and it seemed like a pretty lavender color. I was scared that it would be a dupe of lilacism, but its a much softer color without the stark pastel look. i think it also has less blue in it. takes 3 coats to reach opacity, but the application isnt too difficult. in the bottle there is a interesting shimmer that doesnt reallyshow up on the nail. oh well, still a lovely classic essie color!

I picked this up because it looked like a very soft lavender color yet it had this red glare against the light. It took me 3 coats to get it opaque. Not really a fan of any polish that requires more than 2 coats. Was kind of streaky, but the layering helped. The brush is kind of thin, but was workable. The color is amazing. It’s a super soft color, but its very loud compared to a nude color.
I wear this when I’m in those “I don’t want to wear loud colors or nude colors”

I was shocked by how much I ended up loving Baby Cakes. I thought I would try another lilac polish for a lark even though lavender and light purple as a general rule looks bad on me and makes me look corpsey. This one is a real winner! It’s really light and has a tiny bit of grey to it. I think it works because it has so much white in it its like a nude, understated lilac. Very creamy and opaque in two coats. I’m a fan!

This is a pretty, glossy grayish lilac–but I made the mistake of putting it on my toes, which brings out the grayness and makes my toes look sickly. Still like the color though–next time, I’ll try it on my hands–think it will work better there!

This looked horrid on me. I ended up layering a pink over the top it was so awful. It just didn’t work for my skin-tone, but it is a beautiful colour a shimmery lilac.

I L-O-V-E this, truly do!! Like someone said while ago it’s a opalescent lilac ; i’d add with grey undertones and a opaque perfect texture meaning, no stripes or blotchy application like it often happens in these cases, just perfect even effect.

The perfect (light) purple! I used it on my toenails and it looks great. This polish is opaque, rather than sheer, like many lilacs seem to be.

In the bottle, this looks exactly like OPI Loyalty Island Lilac. On the nails, however, it’s a different story. While the OPI color goes on with a lot of shine and some silver shimmer, Baby Cakes is less shiny, more subdued but also more opalescent. And like the previous reviewer said, it does have a bit of gray, but you can only tell if you’re wearing it against a true lilac. Overall, I think the opalescence makes this a better color for me than L.I.L. It looks young but polished, fun but not obnoxious.

On the nails, Essie Baby Cakes a lilac creme with some gray tones. There is a fine purple shimmer in the bottle, but on the nails, this really only comes through as a subtle flash. So, out of the light, it looks like a mod lilac creme that isn’t too “young” looking. In the light, it’s a little more lilac. I’m a cool-tone PPP and typically have problems with greyed lavender shades. They tend to make my hands look dead. Baby Cakes is one of the more flattering ones that I’ve tried, but I still think it’s not a fantastic color for my skin tone. However, if you are a fan of a mod look or of colors like Essie Sweet Tart or OPI Color of the Zen-tury, then Baby Cakes would probably be a great color for you. For me, it’s nice, but doesn’t make my “greatest hits.”
