Catalyst Serum from Rationale is your fifth step in the essential six regimen before applying your DNA Night cream (6th step). It is also your second step in the Catalyst Trio, look for Catalyst Cleanser and Catalyst Gel Creme. This serum is housed in a futuristic dark amber dropper bottle with cubism style red clement font number 5. It’s texture is that of very thin honey, somewhat sticky and doesn’t quite absorb. Once applied (this serum has high spreadability) this tingles for about a minute or so, I don’t believe in tingling products. I don’t believe skin care should tingle in order for it to work. This is a belief shared with the beautypedia team at Paula’s Choice.
I don’t understand exactly why this serum should tingle, I suspect it is the SS Fruit Mix of Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple, Orange Fruit and Lemon extract this contains as it’s main exfoliating agents along with Salicylic Acid. Rationale believes that one should assist skin with it’s natural functions as closely as possible, perhaps that is why they have chosen this fruit acid blend over the standard synthetic ingredients of Gylcolic, Lactic, Tartaric and Malic acid to exfoliate skin. The manufacturer or raw ingredient supplier from whom Rationale source this ingredient from is in the belief that natural fruit acids like this SS Fruit Mix blend is superior to standard synthetic exfoliating acids. This isn’t the case for me, my skin responds and behaves beautifully when I apply my ORDINARY or Paula’s Choice exfoliants, more so the latter.
This fruit SS Mix blend I have seen in countless brands like Palmer’s (their skin success line and even tone range), NIP+FAB among others, all of them stating that natural acids work just like or are superior to synthetic exfoliating agents.
After my skin tingles, Rationale recommends you apply quick finger tapping massage to help skin absorb this serum. The scent is very strong, that of citrus essential oils which this serum contains in over abundance. Essential ( volatile oils) oils include Lavender, Lavandin, May Chang, Lemon, Orange peel, Bergamot and so on. All this is one big ouch, I can’t imagine the person with a sensitive skin would feel like should they apply this serum.
The rest of the formula contains the usual Isotropic blend of Amino acids, gluconates and Australian botanical extracts.
I think it is a very overpriced serum for what is basically irritating fruit acids, amino acids and questionable botanic extracts and irritating essential oils suspended in a base of fragrant rosewater.
My skin reacts negatively to this the morning after, where little red pimples, the very small kind immediately start popping up all over my forehead. I have never had this problem with an exfoliant. I much prefer my irritant free Paula’s Choice exfoliants to this, they are budget friendly and work every time! I really don’t see the purpose of continuing to use this and will not be repurchasing.
My biggest problem with Rationale is their pervasive use of essential oils, what is so skin identical about them, they don’t have as much wide established research and support behind them as say salicylic acid which also acts as a mild anti inflammatory and helps to reduce redness. Essential oils for me at the end of the day are basically aromatherapy and an easy way for a cosmetic manufacturer to label what is really fragrance, as natural plant oils or extracts. My dermatologist even shied me away from this line now that I am finally realising this among each and every product from Rationale contains too many essential oils. Particularly the citrus kind which some research has demonstrated could possible be even photo toxic! Ouch! Please stay away or at least patch test before buying.
Asking for samples from this place is a hard. They can be generous but it really depends on the sales assistant you talk to. For a routine that costs almost $1000 Australian Dollars in total, you have the right as a consumer to try each and every product before purchase!
Bottom line – overpriced essential oil laden, fruit acid exfoliating blend with a sticky texture. It does have high spreadability so a bottle should last you just over a month.
I will stick with my PC Skin Perfecting 2% BHA liquid thank you!

My skin is more refined after using this. Unfortunately it is too pricey for me to repurchase.

I’ve been using Catalyst for over 8 months now, it’s the first time I used a serum. I’ve never had many skin issues so I never thought I needed active ingredients, but the visible difference is amazing! I use the entire Essential Six range but this is by far my favourite – it unclogs pores and improves the skin tone drastically. My skin is so smooth, it’s unbelievable. The 30ml bottle has lasted me 8 months (and counting) as I use only 2 drops which I find more than sufficient.

This serum has a very viscous consistency. It’s a bit thick and quite sticky. My face always feels sticky after this is applied and I can’t wait to put something else over it to get rid of the feeling. That aside, this does exfoliate my face although the effects aren’t as noticeable as glycolic acid. Like glycolic acid, this does sting a little when applied. I’ve used cheaper facial refining/exfoliating products which do a better job than this, so I probably will not repurchase.
