Some time ago I was gifted a bottle of Iris Silver Mist by a dear friend. I have had it in my parfum cupboard for months untouched. Tonight I was rummaging around trying to decide what to wear whence I accidentally tipped over the bottle, and it fell onto some clean towels I store in the cupboard. I thought, thank heavens it did not break! Then I thought, perhaps now is the time to finally try it, so I generously spritzed both arms and my decolletage. As many other reviewers have opined, it smelt like fresh carrots, so I was not surprised by this, but I admit I was not especially favourably impressed, either.
Curiously enough, my dog smelt it from the other room and immediately came to sniff me. He rarely leaves his comfy bed at this time of night unless he thinks there is food about, so he, too, must have thought it smelt foodie in a vegetal way.
I love iris, but this iris is not the iris fragrance in my collection I would reach for first, or second, or even third. It is an interesting fragrance, ’tis true, but I do not find it especially appealing. I am not sure what all I detected in the dry down, but I did not detect almost all of the listed notes.
This is a fragrance worth testing for reference, but I would not recommend purchasing it blindly. I suppose it is unisex, but I cannot imagine a venue where it would be particularly appropriate or appreciated. Perhaps it would be nice to wear whilst working in one’s garden?? Overall I find it vegetal without a hint of sweetness. Yes, in the dry down there is iris…a rooty, vegetal iris, but there is little else, at least to my nose.
This fragrance is a solid 4/10 across the board for me. I am glad to have experienced it, but it is not a fragrance I would have purchased for myself. My sincere apologies to those who love it. Please try before you buy.

I have the travel flask of this from Serge Lutens, a format I really do not like. Since I also have Fourreau Noire (I regret my FN purchase altogether as it is throat choking,y powdery) in this format, I often cannot tell the difference (opaque black plastic). The 30 ml refills are tall and flimsy and I worry that they will break if I remove them from the black container. And the nozzles aren’t removable unlike SL 50 ml bottles. Since I am a dabber and dislike sprays and sillage, this is a problem.
ISM is a scent Maurice Rouncel did for SL. It is a spring scent for me, green iris with sweet grass and hay of a garden. Mine is a reformulation, perhaps sweeter and a bit easier to wear than the original ( of which I had a decant). I do think it’s genius, but I am in agreement with reviewers below who state that they are not sure that they wish to smell like this. It’s transluscent like FM en passant, a giacobetti scent.
The weather is cooler and I have layered it by a single spray of ISM on one wrist and Tauers Vanilla Flash on the other which I do like very much. Kind of a fresh modern fragrance whose inspiration comes from both LHB and Apres les Ondee. Of course, that kind of ruins the cool rooty soil and transluscent effect, but SL does recommend layering his scents.

This is a Serge that I am definitely not impressed with. It smells exactly like fresh, earthy dirt to me and it doesn’t last long enough on me to appreciate any of the other notes in it. Happy for those that can call this their holy grail; but for me, I call it an expensive scrubber.

Is this fragrance actually made to be worn? I still don’t know the answer since I bought it some months ago (and I wear it on and off). Maybe I will not find the answer, as this fragrance is weird from beginning to the end (I mean, who wants to smell like an iris root roting in damp earth amongst some random patches of grass and metal scraps? ….me actually, from time to time). But is it great ? 10 times YES. I don’t even have an adjective for it. It’s just weird and totally great.

This is one of my favorites–an absolute original. It’s evocative of irises blooming in damp dirt on a cold spring night—-in a graveyard.

Opens with a fresh, wet, cool, and sweet-rooty carrot note that is utterly delicious and unique. This quickly morphs into a salty play-dough-like, ever so slightly makeupey iris which then dries down to a hypnotic beeswax and leather scent that somehow manages to be both comfortingly soft and throat-ticklingly sharp. (The reviews that mentioned ‘vapours’ and ‘oil paint’ were spot on.) Neither feminine nor masculine – just stunning. Not sure if anyone remembers a rooty, pretty home fragrance spray from the 90s called ‘Clean Sheets’ but this reminds me of a rich, fine-fragrance version of that. (Side note: I tend to personally prefer a bit more floral in my perfume, but I find myself wearing this often anyway because it’s so interesting without ever being unpleasant.)

If I could only get myself this one here in the states. I managed to purchase a decant of this. I’ve reapplied it about 4 times today because I love the first blast! ADORE it! Starts out cold but then warms down. When I walk by people I wonder if they think I smell remarkable because I DO!!!! Please make it available to us along with La Myrrhe!

Rooty, muddy iris plant freshly taken out of ground. It still has the dampness of autumn earth. I don’t get the “silver” part, to me, it’s between green and brown. It somehow gives me a feeling of being a gardener working outdoors for too long.
I love the smell but not sure if I want to smell like it.

When I visited the purple, spooky SL boutique in Paris, I was determined to walk away with a full bottle. Problem is, although I can appreciate the craftsmanship of a great oriental or woods, they’re not really my style. Then I found Iris Silver Mist, which smells like you’ve taken a whole irs plant, dirt clinging to roots, thrown it in a food processor, and inhaled. It’s definitely a scent that you wear for yourself, not to smell good, but to truly affect your thoughts and emotions. It’s green and raw, with enough earthiness that it doesn’t smell sharp at all. Fantastic.

Pure distilled iris.
It’s clear, still-in-the-garden iris. No powder, no other flowers. Yes, there is a rooty earthiness at first. On me it quickly becomes a gentle, whispery floral. The coolness is refreshing on hot days, and the perfume is mellow throughout. This is iris as a running stream. Low sillage, very good longevity.
Unique, not really like anything I can think of. If you like Chanel’s 28 La Pausa, you might like this.
For two years, I worked through samples and decants and finally committed to a full bottle. I’ll never be without this.
