The head of Builder Two is composed of a very soft type of white goat hair known as Saikoho. Goat hair is stiffer than sable or blue squirrel, so I expected it to feel a little rough, but was pleasantly surprised at how silky and springy the bristles are, yet still firm. The head is short, dense, and tapered. It’s great for picking up metallics. I get very little to no fallout when I use Builder Two to pack color onto the mobile lid, even when using glittery shadows from Natasha Denona, Anastasia Beverly Hills, or Pat McGrath. Goat hair is versatile; it works well for cream shadows as well as powders.
Sonia G. handles are beautiful, made of sustainably harvested maple. They look glossy and luxurious. According to the product description on Beautylish, this is thanks to four layers of red and black pigments and lacquer. They feel substantial and they are fatter than the handles Wayne Goss has. I don’t mind the heft, but I mention this in case you are particular about the weight of your handles. If you like a heavier brush, these are fantastic. The Wayne Goss line is a good alternative brand if you need handles that are featherlight and slim.
Builder Two has almost replaced my MAC 239 flat shader, in spite of the fact that the head of Builder Two is larger. I used to reach for MAC 239 daily. Now I’m picking up the Sonia G. every day. It just works better when I want to build up the intensity of my powder shadows. However, the smaller size of 239 is better for getting into corners. (Sonia G. makes pencil brushes and smudger brushes which are suitable for precise work in small areas.)
Sonia G.’s brushes are high quality and worth the splurge. I am thinking of buying another Builder Two so I will always have a clean one nearby.
